A Cross-Domain Systematic Mapping Study on Software Engineering for Digital Twins
<p><strong>A Systematic Cross-Domain Mapping Study on the Software Engineering of Digital Twins</strong></p> <p>Manuela Dalibor, Nico Jansen, Bernhard Rumpe, David Schmalzing, Louis Wachtmeister, Manuel Wimmer, and Andreas Wortmann</p> <p>Digital Twins are currently investigated as the technological backbone for providing an enhanced understanding and management of existing systems as well as for designing new systems in various domains, e.g., ranging from single manufacturing components such as sensors to large-scale systems such as smart cities. Given the diverse application domains of Digital Twins, it is not surprising that the characterization of the term Digital Twin, as well as the needs for developing and operating Digital Twins are multi-faceted. Providing a better understanding what the commonalities and differences of Digital Twins in different contexts are, may allow to build reusable support for developing, running, and managing Digital Twins by providing dedicated concepts, techniques, and tool support. In this paper, we aim to uncover the nature of Digital Twins based on a systematic mapping study which is not limited to a particular application domain or technological space. We systematically retrieved a set of 1471 unique publications of which 529 were identified as potentially relevant and of which finally 356 were selected for further investigation. In particular, we analyzed the types of research and contributions made for Digital Twins, the expected properties Digital Twins have to fulfill, how Digital Twins are realized and operated, as well as how Digital Twins are finally evaluated. Based on this analysis, we also contribute a novel feature model for Digital Twins as well as several observations to further guide future software engineering research in this area.</p>
Adopting Micro-Frontends: Impacts and Challenges – A Systematic Mapping Study
<p><strong>Context: </strong>Incorporating new technologies into monolithic frontend projects has been challenging for software development teams, due to issues like code redundancy, inconsistency, and scalability. To address these challenges, the micro-frontend architecture emerged, offering a more modular and independent solution.</p> <p><strong>Goal:</strong>This study aims to investigate the impacts and challenges of adopting the micro-frontend architecture. <br><strong>Method:</strong> We conducted a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) to identify the architectural patterns and approaches used in micro-frontends. Additionally, we carried out a survey to validate the strategies and challenges of adopting this architecture.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> The findings highlighted the relevance of the micro-frontend architecture in modernizing the frontend layer. However, its adoption is closely tied to the complexity and size of the project and team. Therefore, implementing the micro-frontend architecture with a well-defined set of methodological and technological decisions increases the likelihood of successful adoption.</p> <p><em>Keywords:</em> <em>Micro-frontend, Systematic Mapping Study, Challenges, Survey</em></p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

Theory Use In Software Engineering: A Systematic Mapping Study
<p><strong>Abstract </strong></p> <p><strong>Context</strong>: The use of theories in Software Engineering research is not as common or explicit as in other fields,<br>with most studies focusing on technical aspects. However, establishing a more robust theoretical foundation could<br>significantly contribute to the maturation of Software Engineering as a science.</p> <p><strong>Objective</strong>: Therefore, this study investigates the use of theory in software engineering by applying the snowballing<br>technique to systematic literature reviews indexed by the main online databases over the last 16 years. It also analyzes<br>the extent of theory use and what, how, and where these theories are used.</p> <p><strong>Method</strong>: We conducted a systematic mapping study to classify evidence on theory definitions, papers’ quality,<br>research topics, methods, types, theory types, theory roles, and publication venues.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Our results showed that the term “theory” varied among the literature due to inconsistent terminology,<br>thus necessitating a comprehensive approach for accurate identification. Although many theories are cited, only a tiny<br>percentage see repeated application across studies, with limited testing for relevance to practical software engineering<br>contexts.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Despite the increase in proposed theories, software engineering requires further attention to mature, as<br>most papers primarily use theory to justify or motivate experimental research questions. Furthermore, although there<br>is a diversity of research topics and an adaptation of external theories, only 16% of studies explicitly operationalize<br>theory, highlighting the need for more intentional theoretical integration and developing SE-specific frameworks.</p>

Systematic Mapping Study on Domain-Specific Language Development Tools - Data Repository
<p>Domain-specific languages (DSL) are programming or modeling languages devoted to a given application domain. There are many tools used to support the implementation of a DSL, making hard the decision-making process for one or another. In this sense, identifying and mapping their features is relevant for decision-making by academic and industrial initiative on DSL development. <br> Objective: The goal of this work is to identify and map the tools, Language Workbenches (LW), or frameworks that were proposed to develop DSLs discussed and referenced in publications between 2012 and 2019. <br> Method: A Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) of the literature scoping tools for DSL development. <br> Results: We identified 59 tools, including 9 under a commercial license and 41 with non-commercial licenses, and analyzed their features from 230 papers. <br> Conclusion: There is a substantial amount of tools that cover a large number of features. Furthermore, we observed that usually, the developer adopts one type of notation to implement the DSL: textual or graphical. We also discussed research gaps, such as a lack of tools that allow meta-meta model transformations and that support modeling tools interoperability. </p>
