FIGURE 4. Virtual 3D in Description and molecular phylogeny of Tethya leysae sp. nov. (Porifera, Demospongiae, Hadromerida) from the Canadian Northeast Pacific with remarks on the use of microtomography in sponge taxonomy
FIGURE 4. Virtual 3D reconstructions of the cortical skeleton of T. leysae sp. nov. (holotype) imaged using synchrotron radiation-based x-ray micro computer tomography (SR µCT). The massive megasclere bundles reach diameters of up to 500 µm; there is no free space between asters and megasclere bundles as sometimes seen in other Tethya species; patchy aster-free regions are occupied by canals (tissue not visible in spicule-optimized SR µCT, see Nickel et al. 2006a, b). A. – B. Block diagrams of cortex preparations from the holotype (A) and the paratype (B). C. Detail cropped from the paratype (coordinate system in mm). Additional 3D-renderings of the holotype as well as the paratype are available upon request.
FIGURE 1 in Validation of Tethya samaaii Ribeiro & Muricy, 2011, replacement name for the sponge Tethya rubra Samaai & Gibbons, 2005 (Demospongiae, Tethyida, Tethyidae)
FIGURE 1. In situ photographs of (A) Tethya samaaii from Oudekraal, South Africa and (B) Tethya rubra from Abrolhos Archipelago, Brazil.
FIGURE 30. Tethya vacua n in Taxonomic review of Hadromerida (Porifera, Demospongiae) from British Columbia, Canada, and adjacent waters, with the description of nine new species
FIGURE 30. Tethya vacua n. sp. A, Holotype (CASIZ 053441), scale bar 1 cm; B, cross section of holotype, smaller vacuoles of outer cortex (above) and larger vacuoles of inner cortex below; C, anisostrongyle, scale bar 500 µm; D, head of anisostrongyle, scale bar 50 µm; E, foot of anisostrongyle, scale bar 50 µm; F, head of strongyloxea, scale bar 30 µm; G, foot of strongyloxea, scale bar 30 µm; H, megaster scale bar 50 µm; I, megaster scale bar 40 µm; J, oxysphaeraster, scale bar 10 µm; K, acanthostrongylaster, scale bar 10 µm.
FIGURE 65. Tethya diploderma Schmidt, 1870 in An update on the diversity of marine sponges in the southern Gulf of Mexico coral reefs
FIGURE 65. Tethya diploderma Schmidt, 1870 (CNPGG-2191), skeleton and spicules: A. transversal section of the skeleton, radial tracts of megascleres (strongyloxeas) and several sand grains in choanosomal region; B. detail of the ectosomal region with a layer of aster microscleres and part of the tracts of strongyloxeas; C. strongyloxeas, 1—large category and 2—small category; D. spherasters; E. strongylasters; F. oxyaster. Scale bars: A = 500 µm; B = 250 µm; C = 100 µm; D = 25 µm; E–F = 5 µm.
