Activity of forest specialist bats decreases towards wind turbines at forest sites
<p><span>Worldwide, wind turbines are increasingly being built at forest sites to meet the goals of national climate strategies. Yet, the impact on forest ecosystems and biodiversity is barely understood. Bats may be heavily affected by wind turbines in forests, because many species depend on forest ecosystems for roosting and hunting and can experience high fatality rates at wind turbines. <br></span></p> <p><span>We performed acoustic surveys in 24 temperate forests in the low mountain ranges of Central Germany to monitor changes in the acoustic activity of bats in relation to wind turbine proximity, rotor size, vegetation structure and season. Call sequences were identified and assigned to one of three functional guilds: open-space, edge-space and narrow-space foragers, the latter being mainly forest specialists. <br></span></p> <p><span>Based on the response behaviour of bats towards wind turbines in open landscapes, we predicted decreasing bat activity towards wind turbines at forest sites, especially for narrow-space foragers. <br></span></p> <p><span>Vertical vegetation heterogeneity had a strong positive effect on all bats, yet responses to wind turbines in forests varied across foraging guilds. Activity of narrow-space foragers decreased towards turbines over distances of several hundred meters, especially towards turbines with large rotors and during midsummer months. The activity of edge-space foragers did not change with distance to turbines or season, whereas the activity of open-space foragers increased close to turbines only in late summer. </span><span><br></span></p> <p><span><em>Synthesis and applications</em>: We show that narrow-space foragers avoid wind turbines in forests over a spatial scale of several hundred meters. This response was most apparent towards turbines with large rotors. Since forests are an important habitat for this guild, we advise to exclude forests with diverse vegetation structure as potential wind turbine sites and to consider compensation measures to account for habitat degradation associated with the operation of wind turbines in forests.</span></p>
Novel Activation Modulating Sites in a GPCR Identified with a Large-Scale Alchemical Mutation Scan
<p>This dataset contains the starting configurations and mdp files for the alchemical free energy calculations using pmx.<br>The MD parameter files (*.mdp) for the forward reaction (lambda 0 to 1, wt to mutant) and reverse reaction (lambda 1 to 0, mutant to wt) start with f (forward) and r (reverse). Mdp files are available for the energy minimization (em), npt (npt), equilibrium run (equilibrium) and non equilibrium alchemical transition (nonequilibrium). <br>The starting configurations for mutants of the DRD2 receptor can be found in WT7jvr and WT6cm4 for the active and inactive state respectively. Mutant folders are labeled with the residue number and the amino acid it is mutated to.</p>

Nesting activity of Olive ridley and effect of artificial shade at Cascajilloso Beach, a new inhabited nesting site in Pacific Panama
<p><span>Sea turtle nesting activity on newly monitored beaches yields important data to support future regional and global conservation assessments. Here we report on nesting activity of Olive Ridley (<em>Lepidochelys</em> <em>olivacea</em>) at Cascajilloso Beach in Pacific Panama based on data from a new hatchery during seasons 2019, 2020 and 2021. Besides, we conducted a field experiment analyzing the effects of artificial shading on </span><span>hatchlings' biometric characteristics, hatching success and the incubation period. Nesting activity based on number of egg clutches transferred to the hatchery reached a peak between September (33%) and October (25%). Curved carapace length (CCL) of nesting females (64.3–66.2 cm) was similar to other populations of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). The number of egg clutches was 80 in 2019, 74 in 2020 and 108 in 2021, however, the clutch size was slightly smaller (91.5 to 94.5 eggs) compared with other populations of the ETP. This could be a phenotypic variation of nesting females at this beach. The ability to move egg clutches to the hatchery was affected during 2020 season due to COVID-19 restrictions. Heavy rainfall during the incubation period influenced the nest temperatures registered under artificial shade and unshaded treatments (maximum average 29.9 °C), potentially resulting in males. The warmer temperatures in our experimental nests produced heavier hatchlings contrary to general assumptions, but this was also related to straight carapace length only after a threshold value of 40 mm. Hatchlings under the artificial shade were able to grow to a certain size but potentially at the cost of storing less mass (trade-off). The ongoing beach patrolling and hatchery management techniques with long-term baseline data collection are needed to secure the nesting population of <em>L. olivacea</em> at this recently surveyed beach.</span></p>
