Seasonal and annual vegetation surveys of wetlands along the Salt River in and near the greater metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona

The Salt River Biodiversity Project collects vegetation data in several urban wetlands across the Phoenix area (Arizona) along the historic channel of the Salt River. This study, along with bird and reptile monitoring (Bateman and Childers 2022, Bateman and Warren 2022), began in 2012. These biodiversity monitoring initiatives help understand how community composition, biodiversity, and ecosystem structure are changing as a result of pressures such as urbanization, climate change, and land management decisions. Long-term composited Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) for the greater Phoenix, Arizona, USA, metropolitan area and the surrounding Sonoran desert derived from annual and seasonal Landsat imagery, 1998 to 2023

Abstract ======== This data package consists of multiple decades of modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) raster data across the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) study area within metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona (USA), temporally aggregated by year and by four meteorological seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). By providing a metric by which to reliably identify bodies of open water, these MNDWI data are intended to facilitate analyses of land-based environmental variables (e.g., urbanization, vegetation, land surface temperature) and can also be used to track long-term and seasonal change in the coarse extent of open water as a land-cover type. MNDWI was derived, following the methods of Xu (2006), from annual and seasonal composites of 30-m resolution Landsat 5-9 Level-2 Surface Reflectance imagery. All imagery retrieval and data processing were completed with Google Earth Engine (Gorelick et al. 2017) and program R. Annual Water Quality in Everglades National Park, Florida Bay, West Florida Shelf, and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Florida, USA: 1994-2019

Annual (water year basis) geometric mean concentrations of total phosphorus (TP), soluble-reactive phosphorus (SRP), total nitrogen (TN), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN; calculated as nitrate + nitrite + ammonia), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), and total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations across Everglades National Park (ENP), Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), West Florida Shelf and Florida Bay. This dataset is composed of data from multiple sources including Florida Coastal Everglades, Florida International University Southeast Research Center (FIU SERC), South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (NOAA AOML). All values reported less than the laboratory minimum detection limit (MDL) were set to one-half the MDL. Annual geometric mean concentrations were computed for monitoring locations with greater than five years of data and four samples per year with a minimum of one sample in the wet and dry seasons. This dataset was created to evaluate long-term spatial and temporal trends in nutrients, chlorophyll-a, and total organic carbon at the landscape scale relative to freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Density and cover of winter annual plants in three harvester ant habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1987

This dataset contains plant cover and density data collected in three harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex rugosus) nesting habitats at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 1987. The purpose of this investigation was to answer three general questions: 1. How does the modification of soil properties and the ratios of resources (e.g., water-N) by ants alter species assemblages of winter annual plants at the edge of the ant nests? 2. How does the "spring cleaning", clipping, predation or herbivory by ants affect success of the winter annual plants at the edge of ant nests? 3. Are there significant differences in the floristic assemblage and belowground standing crop (root biomass) between the edge of ant nest and the surrounding unaffected soils? Variables included in the dataset include density and cover of all winter annual plants measured at regular intervals between January and May of 1987. Density is expressed as the number of individuals of a species per square meter. The cover of each species was calculated as the area covered by a perpendicular (not vertical) projection of its aerial parts onto the ground surface and expressed in covered area (cm squared) per square meter. This study was completed in 1987.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Long-term Community Dynamics: Backreef (Lagoon) Corals Annual Survey, ongoing since 2005

This dataset contains the percentage cover of all stony corals (Scleractinia, pooled among genera) and other major groups analyzed from 0.5 x 0.5 m photographic quadrats at the Backreef habitat at the Moorea Coral Reef LTER, French Polynesia. This survey time series began in 2005 and is repeated each year in April. Functional groups counted are: Scleractinian corals, Macroalgae, Crustose Coralline Algae / Bare Space, Soft Corals, Hydrocorals ( Millepora ), Algal Turf and Sand. The coral community was sampled photographically in all represented habitats surrounding the island: Fringing Reef, Lagoon, and Outer Reef. This dataset contains only Lagoon (Backreef) data (see knb-lter-mcr.4 for the other habitats) and is structured in a repeated-measures protocol to allow a statistical contrast of sites, shores and times. Community structure was determined through a coarse analysis of the benthic community, initially completed in situ (2005), but using photoquadrats from 2006. There are quadrats analyzed at each of five areas within each site, and the areas are revisited (but not the quadrats) each year to support the repeated measures design. There are two tables available, providing different views of the same data: a long table having all values in one column and a wide table having a separate column for each observed object. Summary statistics and annual trends in chloride concentration in urban Minnesota lakes and streams

These data tables describe statistical summaries of chloride concentration, temporal trends in annual chloride, and projected risk of future chloride pollution in lakes and streams of the 17 most urban counties in Minnesota. Data were summarized separately for lakes and for streams, and include statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, upper and lower confidence intervals, and maximum) over the entire data record, over the warm season (May - October), and over the most recent 5 years (i.e., since 2018). Trends were computed on annual means and medians. For lakes, data were aggregated by lake basin (MN DNR Lake ID, or DOW) as well as by depth of sample (surface and deep). For streams, data were aggregated by individual site level as well as by stream reach (per MN Pollution Control Agency assessment units). Risk of chloride pollution was also determined for sites with longer records (10+ years) based on current concentration, number of exceedances of chronic standards, and projected chloride concentration based on current trends. Raw data were extracted from two sources: (1) the National Water Quality Portal (USGS & EPA) and (2) the Metropolitan Council Environmental Information Management System. The data were originally collected by a large number of entities, including watershed management authorities in the state of Minnesota, tribal groups, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, municipalities, university researchers, private consultants, and the Metropolitan Council. Some data records begin as early as the 1950's or 1960's, with many sites still including active data collection. A total of approximately 45,000 observations of chloride were included for lakes and wetlands, and approximately 70,000 observations for streams. Nearly 1600 stream sites and 700 lake/wetland sites were represented in the raw data, with 356 stream sites and 600 lakes represented in the summaries (after filtering out sites with less than 1 year of data collection). Annual snow survey, Green Lakes Valley, Niwot Ridge, Colorado, 2013 - ongoing.

Yearly snow surveys were conducted in the Green Lakes Valley in the City of Boulder Watershed at the estimated peak of snowpack in late spring. Over a period of several days, surveying teams (1 to several people) traversed valley slopes measuring snow depth with avalanche probes. Locations of each depth measurement were recorded as waypoints in Garmin hand-held GPS units. Snow depths were recorded on standardized field sheets along with dates, recorder names, waypoint numbers, and comments.

Zooplankton collected with a 2-m, 700-um net towed from surface to 120 m, aboard Palmer Station Antarctica LTER annual cruises off the western Antarctic peninsula, 2009 - 2024.

Zooplankton are a morphologically and taxonomically diverse group of animals. Many zooplankton feed on phytoplankton and thus provide a link between primary producers and higher trophic levels. Zooplankton density and biovolume were determined at grid stations on the annual LTER cruises along the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). Annual cruises take place between late December to early February, except for the NBP21-13 cruise, which was November and December. Typically, zooplankton were collected with a 2x2 meter, 700um mesh net fitted with a flow meter and towed obliquely to 120m. Zooplankton distributions vary spatially due to water column characteristics, which affect their predators' distributions. As climate change continues to affect the WAP, the relative abundance of the various zooplankton components can also be expected to change.

Standard body length of Euphausia superba collected with a 2-m, 700-um net towed from surface to 120 m, collected aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 2009 - 2024.

Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, are a critical food-web link between phytoplankton primary production and higher trophic levels, such as whales, penguins, and seals. Krill standard length was measured from LTER zooplankton tows along the western Antarctic Peninsula. Annual cruises take place between late December to early February, except for the NBP21-13 cruise, which was November and December. Length data provides estimates of age-class abundance and recruitment. Climate-induced changes in krill recruitment are an important consideration in the management and modelling of krill populations.

Length of Salpa thompsoni collected with a 2-m, 700-um net towed from surface to 120 m, collected aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 2009 - 2024.

Salps (Salpa thompsoni) are conspicuous gelatinous zooplankton capable of rapid population increases, enabling them to respond quickly to unpredictable phytoplankton blooms common in the Antarctic. Body length was measured on salps collected from LTER zooplankton tows along the western Antarctic Peninsula. Annual cruises take place between late December to early February, except for the NBP21-13 cruise, which was November and December. Salps have amongst the highest filtration rates of all zooplankton, and package their waste into large, fast sinking fecal pellets. These pellets provide a mechanism to export carbon fixed in the surface waters into the deep ocean. Since filtration rates and pellet size are positively related to the size of a salp, population estimates of grazing and exported carbon can be determined through length data.

Zooplankton collected with a 1.4-m2 frame, 500-μm mesh Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS) aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 2009-2017

Zooplankton are a morphologically and taxonomically diverse group of animals. Many zooplankton feed on phytoplankton in surface waters and thus provide a link between primary producers and higher trophic levels. Other zooplankton reside in the mesopelagic zone and feed on detritus or on other animals. Depth-discrete density of zooplankton taxa was determined at process study stations on the annual Palmer LTER cruises along the western Antarctic Peninsula. Samples were collected with a 1.4-m2 frame, 500-μm mesh Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS) towed obliquely to the surface from a depth of typically 500 m. MOCNESS tows were conducted in consecutive day-night pairs at each process study station. Zooplankton depth distributions vary between day and night as these animals conduct diel vertical migrations. Depth distributions also vary among zooplankton taxa based on species feeding ecology and life history traits. Zooplankton diel vertical migration contributes to the export of carbon and nutrients from the surface ocean to the mesopelagic zone.

Annual nutrient loading and yield to Plum Island Estuary, as measured at the Ipswich and Parker Dams

Nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments, are determined from monthly grab samples taken at the Ipswich and Parker dams. These nutrient concentrations are then used in conjunction with USGS discharge data (recorded at gages in the Parker River at Byfield, MA and the Ipswich River at Ipswich, MA) to calculate annual nutrient loading to the Estuary, coming over each dam. Annual yield is also calculated for both dams.

This long-term study at the Sevilleta LTER measures net primary production (NPP) across four distinct ecosystems: creosote-dominant shrubland (Site C, est. winter 1999), black grama-dominant grassland (Site G, est. winter 1999), blue grama-dominant grassland (Site B, est. winter 2002), and pinon-juniper woodland (Site P, est. winter 2003), which is now in its own dataset, SEV278 (Pinon-Juniper (Core Site) Quadrat Data). Net primary production is a fundamental ecological variable that quantifies rates of carbon consumption and fixation. Estimates of NPP are important in understanding energy flow at a community level as well as spatial and temporal responses to a range of ecological processes. While measures of both below- and above-ground biomass are important in estimating total NPP, this study focuses on above-ground net primary production (ANPP). Burn Study Sites Seasonal Biomass and Seasonal and Annual NPP Data for the Net Primary Production Study at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico

In 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a prescribed burn over a large part of the northeastern corner of the Sevilleta NWR. This study was designed to look at the effect of fire on above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) within different vegetation types. Net primary production (NPP) is a fundamental ecological variable that measures rates of carbon consumption and fixation. Estimates of NPP are important in understanding energy flow at a community level as well as spatial and temporal responses to a range of ecological processes. While measures of both below- and above-ground biomass are important in estimating total NPP, this study focuses on above-ground net primary production (ANPP). Above-ground net primary production (ANPP) is equal to the change in plant mass, including loss to death and decomposition, over a given period of time. To measure this change, ANPP is sampled twice a year (spring and fall) for all species in each of three vegetation types. In addition, volumetric measurements are obtained from adjacent areas to build regressions correlating biomass and volume. Three vegetation types were chosen for this study: mixed grass (MG), mixed shrub (MS) and black grama (G). Forty permanent 1m x 1m plots were installed in both burned and unburned sections of each habitat type. The core black grama site included in SEV129 was incorporated into this dataset as an unburned control, so an additional unburned G site was not created. The data for this site is noted as site=G and treatment=C (i.e., control). The original mixed-grass unburned plot caught fire unexpectedly in the fall of 2009 and was subsequently moved to the south. Volumetric measurements are made using vegetation data from permanent plots collected in SEV156, "Burn Study Sites Quadrat Data for the Net Primary Production Study" and regressions correlating biomass and volume constructed using seasonal harvest weights from SEV157, "Net Primary Productivity (NPP) Weight Data."
