Evaluation of Materials for Low Temperature Asphalt Pavement Performance, BBR Field study

Asphalt mixtures were collected from seven construction projects, both of the plant and during laydown. One SGC cylindrical specimen or ‘puck’ of 80 mm thickness was prepared for each type of mixture. By doing so, 14 different SGC pucks were obtained. The pucks were labeled as ‘UT-01-P’ to ‘UT-07-P’ for plant mixtures and ‘UT-01-F’ to ‘UT-07-F’ for mixtures that were obtained during laydown in the field. Because of compacting to a specific height, the air voids of the compacted pucks varied from 3% to 6%.

In Lab A, the specimens were tested in the Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) by following the AASHTO TP 125-16 testing procedure at three different temperatures: -12°C, -18°C, and -24°C. On the other hand, in Lab C, the specimens were tested at only one temperature (PG + 10°C). In average, 12 specimens were tested for each mixture at both of the laboratories.

Dataset for the paper "Three indexes to characterize crushing and screening of reclaimed asphalt pavement"

The dataset includes Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) grading curve testing results from seven different materials that were produced using four different full-scale aggregate crushing machines. Samples of the same material before and immediately after crushing were obtained. The grading curves include white RAP (aggregates without bitumen) and black RAP (reclaimed asphalt together with bitumen). The data was used to develop and validate three indexes – chunk, breakdown, and filler increase indexes. These indexes can be used to quantitatively characterize crushing equipment and to optimize the crushing parameters.

When using, please cite the paper: Zaumanis M., et al. Balanced Asphalt Concrete Mix Performance Phase II: Analysis of BBR Tests

The files herein contain results from the Bending Beam Rheometer. The tests were conducted in accordance to AASHTO TP 125-16 between November 2015 and November 2017 as part of a contract witht he Utah Department of Transportation.

Each file represents the results from one beam. The file contains a header with the beam designations, and the beam dimensions. Four columns are contained in each file corresponding to measurements of time (s), force (mN), deflection (mm) and temperature (ºC). The time increased in increments of 0.5 s from zero to 240 during the duration of loading. The load was controlled with a constant value of approximately 4413 ± 50 mN. The deflection of the beam at midspan was recorded using an LVDT to 0.001 mm precision. The temperature is the temperature of the methanol bath used to condition the specimen during testing. It was measured with a thermocouple to 0.01 ºC precision.

Knowing the time and the deflection at midspan, beam theory can be used to determine the time-dependent creep modulus of the beam.

The file naming convention is shown in the read me file.
