Katmai Barbed Fish Spear Point

This is an ancestral unilaterally barbed fish spear from Katmai National Park and Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula. Ancestral Alutiit used these spears to harvest fish in rivers, lakes, and the ocean. The hole in it is where a long, leather line likely attached this spearhead to a shaft. When speared into a fish, the spearhead would release from the shaft and stay in the fish allowing the fisher to pull in their catch. About 12 cm in length. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Feather iridescence of Coeligena hummingbird species varies due to differently organized barbs and barbules

<p>Hummingbirds are perhaps the most exquisite bird species because of their prominent iridescence, created by stacks of melanosomes in the feather barbules. The feather colours crucially depend on the nanoscopic dimensions of the melanosome, and the displayed iridescence can distinctly vary, dependent on the spatial organization of the barbs and barbules. We have taken the genus Coeligena as a model group, with species having feathers that strongly vary in their spatial reflection properties. We studied the feather morphology and the optical characteristics. We found that the coloration of Coeligena hummingbirds depends on both the Venetian-blind-like arrangement of the barbules and the V-shaped, angular arrangement of the barbules at opposite sides of the barbs. Both the nanoscopic and microscopic organization of the hummingbird feather components determine the bird's macroscopical appearance.</p>

Non - invasive identification of individuals of Sumatra barb Puntigrus tetrazona

<p>Non-invasive fish identification of individuals can provide new possibilities for the monitoring of fish cultivation, improve and make fish production technologies less demanding for farmers, and increase fish welfare. The aim of this research is to confirm the idea of automatic non-invasive image-based fish identification of individuals using visible features on a fish body and prove the pattern stability during the fish cultivation period. Visible patterns, such as black stripes along the body of a Sumatra barb (<em>Puntigrus tetrazona)</em>, were used for machine identification of individual fish. Two experiments were completed: A short-term experiment (43 fish) to show the uniqueness of the stripe patterns for identification, and a long-term experiment (25 fish) to test the stability of patterns during the cultivation period. The overall accuracy of classification was 100% for data collection in one day and 88% between two data collection times. This study shows that visible patterns and image processing methods can be used to automatically identify individual fish of the same species.</p>
