DiverReef: The global repository of divers' and snorkelers' behavior during tourism activities and their interactions with reef environments over 20 years
<p>The DiverReef database provides the first public dataset on the underwater behavior of recreational divers and snorkellers in shallow reef environments (< 25 m depth) globally and their interactions with the reef seascape and/or reef benthic sessile organisms. The dataset comprises 19 years of data (2004-2023) by observing the behavior of 2312 recreational divers and snorkelers in 9 countries at 19 diving destinations and 176 diving sites. The data were collected through on-site observation of divers' behavior during tourism activities and their physical interactions with the reef structure and/or benthic reef sessile organisms. Observers discretely followed divers and recorded their behavior and interactions with the reef over set time periods. Interactions were described as "contact" and "damage", the latter refers to when physical damage to a benthic organism or the reef structure was observed. Besides behavior, observers also recorded data on the type of diving activity (scuba or snorkeling), profiles of the divers (gender and experience), use of cameras by the divers, visibility, type of reef formation and marine protection status of the dive site. This is the external repository where the DiverReef database is archived. This database has an attribution-share alike (CC BY-SA 4.0 Deed) copyright restriction. When using this database, the original paper in the Ecology journal (include DOI when available) must be cited.</p>

Data from: The many dimensions of diet breadth: phytochemical, genetic, behavioral, and physiological perspectives on the interaction between a native herbivore and an exotic host
From the perspective of an herbivorous insect, conspecific host plants are not identical, and intraspecific variation in host nutritional quality or defensive capacity might mediate spatially variable outcomes in plant-insect interactions. Here we explore this possibility in the context of an ongoing host breadth expansion of a native butterfly (the Melissa blue, Lycaeides melissa) onto an exotic host plant (alfalfa, Medicago sativa). We examine variation among seven alfalfa populations that differed in terms of colonization by L. melissa; specifically, we examined variation in phytochemistry, foliar protein, and plant population genetic structure, as well as responses of caterpillars and adult butterflies to foliage from the same populations. Regional patterns of alfalfa colonization by L. melissa were well predicted by phytochemical variation, and colonized patches of alfalfa showed a similar level of inter-individual phytochemical diversity. However, phytochemical variation was a poor predictor of larval performance, despite the fact that survival and weight gain differed dramatically among caterpillars reared on plants from different alfalfa populations. Moreover, we observed a mismatch between alfalfa supporting the best larval performance and alfalfa favored by ovipositing females. Thus, the axes of plant variation that mediate interactions with L. melissa depend upon herbivore life history stage, which raises important issues for our understanding of adaptation to novel resources by an organism with a complex life history.
Data from: Behavioral and morphological traits interact to promote the evolution of alternative reproductive tactics in a lizard
Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) are predicted to be the result of disruptive correlational selection on suites of morphological, physiological and behavioral traits. ARTs are most obvious when they occur in discrete morphs with concomitant behavioral tactics. However, ARTs driven by behavior, in species lacking obvious phenotypic differences, are rarely documented and poorly understood. We quantified selection acting on phenotypic traits predicted to characterize ARTs by observing marked lizards in six semi-natural populations. We quantified reproductive fitness for each male using 6 microsatellite DNA loci from 226 offspring born to 56 females. Candidate models containing directional and correlational selection gradients were equally supported. As predicted, large males with large home ranges and large males who were observed frequently had the highest reproductive success. We also found evidence that large males that moved little, but were observed frequently and large males which moved frequently, but were observed little, were predicted to have high fitness. Model predictions support our verbal hypothesis regarding the phenotypes characterizing ARTs and suggest that large males may be adopting subtly different tactics to acquire paternity. Our results suggest that disruptive correlational selection between behavioral traits may drive the evolution of ARTs in 'cryptic' systems that lack overt polymorphisms.
Data for: Contextual behavioral interactions of common side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana)
<p>These datasets are a summary of all interactions between Common Side-blotched Lizards (Uta stansburiana) and other species. The first (AdultUtaInteractions) contains rows that result from individual replicate interactions during focal-animal observations in two different years. Data include date of observation, time of focal's start, ID of Common Side-blotched Lizard observerd, its sex, and body size as well as the identification of the species with which this individual interacted and its sex. Following this the are the characteristics of the focal animal during 5 min. periods before (pre) and during/following (post) an interaction for the focal animal's perch (height and diameter), movement, and displays (headbobs) as their sum during those 5-min. periods and as the difference (post less pre). Following this are interaction intensity scores (0=no interaction, 5=most intense interaction), intensity scores with initiation coded by sign (positive values as initiated by focal animal, negative as by other individual). Next are display body postures recoded during the interaction (used post-interaction only) scored as N=none or identifying the species performing the posture. These are repeated as effect codes (0=no posture, 1=posture used during interaction). Finally, a notes column indicates any noted details of the interaction.</p> <p>The other dataset (DailyInteractionsSums&Rates) contains a summary of each day's data collection during this study over the two years of study (JD=days since Jan. 1). Decimal min. contains the total time of focal observations performed on that day. Following this are columns containing the count of intrasexual and intersexual interactions as well as the count of intraspecific and interspecific interactions observed on that day. There are then two columns containing the count of events occurring between Uta stansburiana (U.s.) and Sceloporus occidentalis (S.o.) and between Uta and Sceloporus graciosus (S.g.). Next time is calculated as a decimal hours basis before the count of interactions per hour are calculated for each of the previous categories of counts.</p>

Olfactory cues of risk and visual cues of safety interact with familiarity and phylogeny in shaping behavioral responses by littoral fishes
<p>Prey incorporate information reliability when assessing risk of predation. Here, we report results of an experiment testing avoidance of chemical alarm cues derived from skin extract of blacknose shiners, <em>Notropis</em> <em>heterolepis</em> (BNS), attraction of a visible shoal of five BNS, and the combination of both, on fishes in Deming Lake where BNS occur. We then repeated the experiment in nearby Budd Lake where BNS do not occur. BNS avoided traps with conspecific alarm cues but did not respond to the presence of BNS shoals. Fathead minnows, <em>Pimephales</em> <em>promelas</em> (FHM) avoided traps chemically labeled with BNS alarm cue when a shoal was absent and avoided BNS shoals when traps were labeled with water (control). When both BNS alarm cue and BNS shoal were combined, antipredator response to BNS alarm cue invoked a shoaling response with the BNS shoal in the trap. Redbelly dace, <em>Chrysomus</em> <em>eos</em> (RBD) responded weakly to BNS cues in Deming Lake and ignored them in Budd Lake. Non-cyprinid species (brook stickleback <em>Culaea</em> <em>inconstans</em> and pumpkinseed sunfish, <em>Lepomis</em> <em>gibbosus</em>) did not respond to either olfactory or visual cues of BNS in Deming Lake. In Budd Lake, neither avoidance of BNS alarm cue nor attraction to BNS shoals surpassed the threshold of statistical significance, indicating a role of familiarity and learned recognition of risk and safety in cross-species reactions to olfactory and visual cues of heterospecifics.</p>
