Data from: Optimization of nitrogen and carbon removal with simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) in membrane bioreactor (MBR)
<p>In this study, a membrane bioreactor (MBR) was used to achieve both nitrogen and carbon removal by a simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) process. During the entire experiment, the optimal operating parameters as determined by response surface methodology (RSM) were a C/N value of 1.16, a DO value of 0.84 mg·L<sup><span>-1</span></sup>, and an aerobic time (<i><span>T</span></i><i><sub><span><span>ae</span></span></sub></i>) of 15.75 min. Under these conditions, the SNAD process achieved efficient and stable nitrogen and carbon removal; the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency were 92.31% and 95.67%, respectively. With the formation of granular sludge, the membrane fouling rate (MFR) decreased significantly from 35.0 Pa·h<sup><span>-1</span></sup> at SNAD start-up to 19.9 Pa·h<sup><span>-1</span></sup> during stable operation. Fluorescence in situ hybrid (FISH) analyse confirmed the structural characteristics and the relative ratio of AerAOB, AnAOB, and DNB in the SNAD system.</p>

Data from: Synthesis of activated carbon from biowaste of fir bark for methylene blue removal
Activated carbon (AC) was successfully prepared from low-cost forestry fir bark (FB) waste using KOH activation method. Morphology and texture properties of ACFB was studied by scanning and high-resolution transmission electron microscopies (SEM and HRTEM), respectively. The resulting of fir bark based activated carbon (ACFB) demonstrated high surface area (1552 m2/g) and pore volume (0.84 cm3/g), both of which reflect excellent potential adsorption properties of ACFB towards methylene blue (MB). The effect of various factors, such as pH, initial concentration, adsorbent content as well as adsorption duration were studied individually. Adsorption isotherms of MB were fitted using all three non-linear models (Freundlich, Langmuir and Tempkin). The best fitting of MB adsorption results was obtained using Freundlich and Temkin. Experimental results showed that kinetics of MB adsorption by our ACFB adsorbent followed pseudo-second order model. Maximum adsorption capacity obtained was 330 mg/g, which indicated that fir bark is an excellent raw material for low-cost production of activated carbon suitable for cationic dye removal.
Data from: Removal of Cr6+ ions from water by electricosorption on modified activated carbon fibre felt
Electrosorption is a novel desalination technique that has many advantages in the treatment of sewage. However, commercially available activated carbon electrodes for electrosorption commonly have low microporosity, poor molding performance, and low adsorption and regeneration efficiency. Here we evaluated a novel adsorbent material, activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF), for electrosorption of chromium ions (Cr6+) in sewage treatment. The ACFF was modified with 20% nitric acid and its modified structure was characterized. The modified ACFF was used as an adsorbing electrode to investigate its desalination effect by electrosorption. Results showed that compared with those of unmodified ACFF, the modified ACFF had more carbonyl and carboxyl groups and the specific surface area, average pore size and micropore volume of the modified ACFF also improved by 32.2%, 2.5%, and 23.1%, respectively. The kinetics of Cr6+ adsorption conformed to the pseudo-second order kinetic equation, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model. In addition, the regeneration rate of the modified ACFF electrode was more than 94%. In conclusion, the modified ACFF exhibits excellent electrosorption and regeneration performance for Cr6+ removal from water and thus is of great value for promotion in sewage treatment.

Long-term litter removal rather than litter addition enhances ecosystem carbon sequestration in a temperate steppe
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>1. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Global change can greatly affect plant productivity and subsequently litter input to soil, with potential impacts on soil carbon (C) fluxes. However, the effects of litter layer in mediating C cycling and budget at an ecosystem scale is still not clear. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>2. As part of a long-term litter fall manipulation experiment in a temperate steppe on the Mongolian Plateau, this study was conducted to explore effects of litter removal and addition on ecosystem C budget and the associated mechanisms.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>3. Overall, litter removal enhanced photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) at soil surface by 31.0%, but litter addition reduced it by 26.5%. Litter removal decreased soil inorganic nitrogen (SIN) content at the depth of 0-10 cm by 13.6%, but litter addition enhanced it by 14.1%. Litter removal increased legume abundance by 131.1%, whereas litter addition enhanced grass abundance by 30.7% but decreased forb abundance by 33.1%. Litter removal increased gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) through enhancing PAR and legume abundance, whereas litter addition elevated GEP by changing plant community composition mediated by decreasing PAR and increasing SIN. Litter removal did not affect ecosystem respiration (ER), but litter addition stimulated ER by 14.9%. Therefore, while litter addition did not affect net ecosystem productivity (NEP), litter removal surprisingly enhanced NEP by 23.9% over the later 7 years.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>4. Our findings highlight that more aboveground litter input derived from biomass production may not necessarily result in a larger ecosystem C sink in grasslands under global change scenarios in the future. On the contrary, proper litter removal may be an effective way to increase the ecosystem C sink in grassland management.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
