Novel Insights into the Bioactive Metabolites of Macrocybe gigantea (Massee) Pegler & Lodge, a Wild Edible Macrofungi Using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Combined with Chemoinformatics Approaches

Macrocybe gigantea (MG) is an edible mushroom and has multiple pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antioxidant, and antitumor activities. However, only a few reports were available on the bioactive compounds and bioactivity of this mushroom. In this concern, the present study was aimed to explore the unique chemical diversity from the fruiting body of MG. The species identification was done accurately with morphological and molecular methods followed by mycochemical extraction in different solvent systems. The ethanolic extract of the fruiting body gave maximum yield and its Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was performed along with antibacterial activity and cell viability by MTT assay. The GC-MS analysis revealed 50 metabolites and further chemoinformatics analysis of these metabolites revealed their possible biological activities. In addition, the mushrooms' physico-chemical and mineral element analysis revealed the quality and authenticity of the species. Altogether, the current investigation gives a comprehensive overview of the bioactive metabolites of MG.

Combined palaeohistological and isotopic inferences of thermometabolism in extinct Neosuchia, using Goniopholis and Dyrosaurus (Pseudosuchia: Crocodylomorpha) as case studies

The evolution of thermometabolism in pseudosuchians (Late Triassic to the present) remains a partly unsolved issue: extant taxa (crocodilians) are ectothermic, but the clade was inferred ancestrally endothermic. Here we inferred the thermometabolic regime of two neosuchian groups, Goniopholididae (Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous) and Dyrosauridae (Middle Cretaceous to Late Eocene), close relatives of extant crocodilians, in order to elucidate the evolutionary pattern across Metasuchia (Early Jurassic to the present), a clade comprising Neosuchia (Early Jurassic to the present) and Notosuchia (Middle Jurassic until Late Miocene). We propose a new integrative approach combining geochemical analyses to infer body temperature from the stable oxygen isotope composition of tooth phosphate and palaeohistology and phylogenetic comparative methods to infer resting metabolic rates (RMR) and red blood cells dimensions. †Dyrosaurus and †Goniopholis share with extant crocodilians similar lifestyles, body forms, bone tissue organization, body temperatures (Tb), metabolic rates and red blood cells dimensions. Consistently, we infer ectothermy for †Dyrosaurus and †Goniopholis with the parsimonious implication of neosuchians and metasuchians as being primitively ectothermic.

Data from: The combined effects of treated sewage discharge and land use on rivers

Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly threatened by multiple anthropogenic stressors. Release of treated sewage effluent and pollution from agricultural or urban sources can independently reduce water quality with implications for ecological communities. However, our knowledge of the combined effects of these stressors is limited. We performed a field study to quantify the combined effect of treated sewage discharge and land use on nutrient concentrations, sewage fungus presence, and communities of macroinvertebrates and benthic algae. Over three seasons in four rivers we found that a model which included an interaction between sewage pollution and time of the year (i.e., months) was the best predictor of nutrient concentrations and the abundance of algae and sewage fungus. Both macroinvertebrate and algae communities shifted downstream of sewage input. Specifically, more tolerant groups, such as cyanobacteria and Oligochaetes, were more abundant. The EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Tricoptera) water quality score was best explained by an interaction between month and agriculture in the surrounding landscape. Overall, our results show that sewage discharge has a significant impact on water quality and benthic riverine communities, regardless of the surrounding land uses. Agricultural inputs, however, could be more important than treated sewage discharge in reducing the abundance of sensitive invertebrate taxa. We need both improvements to wastewater treatment processes and reductions in agricultural pollution to reduce threats to vulnerable freshwater communities.
