SRS Corridor Experiment Annual Plant Occurrence Dataset, South Carolina, USA, 2000 - current
The impacts of habitat fragmentation and restoring connectivity are difficult to disentangle from other drivers such as area and patch shape and may change over longer time scales. This dataset includes long-term colonization and extinction rates and plant species richness data based on plant occupancy records from experimental landscapes that manipulate habitat connectivity through the presence of habitat corridors, while controlling for patch area and shape. The experimental landscapes are located at the Savannah River Site near Aiken, SC, USA (i.e., “SRS Corridor Experiment”).
Landscape Corridors Promote Long Distance Seed Dispersal by Birds During Winter but Not During Summer at an Experimentally Fragmented Restoration Site
In fragmented landscapes, plant population persistence and community diversity can hinge upon plants dispersing seeds long distances between isolated patches of habitat. Landscape corridors, which connect otherwise isolated patches, have been shown to increase seed dispersal by birds moving between patch fragments. However, because bird behaviors change seasonally, the strength of this "corridor effect" may also change. We assessed the utility of corridors for promoting seed dispersal by birds during both summer and winter in a well-replicated corridor experiment conducted in early successional longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) savannah habitat at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, USA. We used a single species of bird-dispersed fruiting plant, American black nightshade (Solanum americanum), and controlled the timing and number of fruits available to birds during summer and winter. Corridors increased long-distance seed dispersal during winter but not during summer, indicating that the effectiveness of corridors for promoting long-distance seed dispersal can depend upon plant reproductive timing and seasonal differences in bird movement. A better understanding of the seasonality of plant-animal interactions will permit better predictions about whether and how corridors provide connectivity for plants.
Caught in a bottleneck: habitat loss for woolly mammoths in central North America and the ice-free corridor during the last deglaciation
<p>The dataset is to describe the habitat structure and bioenergetic characteristics of woolly mammoths (<i><span>Mammuthus primigenius</span></i>) in North America during the last deglaciation between 15 and 10 ka. The habitat structure includes fractional woody cover (FWC) and net primary productivity (NPP) for 20 plant functional types (PFTs). NPP is based on the dynamic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS (LPJG). FWC is based on LPJ-GUESS and fossil pollen records in the Neotoma Paleoecology Database. The bioenergetic characteristics of woolly mammoths are the results of Niche Mapper, including metabolic rate, forage consumption, freshwater consumption, and other bioenergetic traits of individual woolly mammoths. These data were conducted at a temporal resolution of 100-year means of climate simulations every 1,000 years, from 15 to 10 ka. Simulations were run for all of North America except Alaska (10° – 80°N, 140° – 45°W) at a spatial resolution of 0.5°x0.5° grid latitude and longitude.</p>
Data from: Comparative landscape genetics of two frugivorous bats in a biological corridor undergoing agricultural intensification
Agricultural intensification in tropical landscapes poses a new threat to the ability of biological corridors to maintain functional connectivity for native species. We use a landscape genetics approach to evaluate impacts of expanding pineapple plantations on two widespread and abundant frugivorous bats in a biological corridor in Costa Rica. We hypothesize that the larger, more mobile Artibeus jamaicensis will be less impacted by pineapple than the smaller Carollia castanea. In 2012 and 2013, we sampled 735 bats in 26 remnant forest patches surrounded by different proportions of forest, pasture, crops and pineapple. We used 10 microsatellite loci for A. jamaicensis and 16 microsatellite loci for C. castanea to estimate genetic diversity and gene flow. Canonical correspondence analyses indicate that land cover type surrounding patches has no impact on genetic diversity of A. jamaicensis. However, for C. castanea, both percentage forest and pineapple surrounding patches explained a significant proportion of the variation in genetic diversity. Least-cost transect analyses (LCTA) and pairwise G″st suggest that for A. jamaicensis, pineapple is more permeable to gene flow than expected, while as expected, forest is the most permeable land cover for gene flow of C. castanea. For both species, LCTA indicate that development may play a role in inhibiting gene flow. The current study answers the call for landscape genetic research focused on tropical and agricultural landscapes, highlights the value of comparative landscape genetics in biological corridor design and management and is one of the few studies of biological corridors in any ecosystem to implement a genetic approach to test corridor efficacy.
Data from: Comparative phylogeography biogeography of forest-dependent mammals reveals paleo-forest corridors throughout Sundaland
The evolutionary history of the colugo, a gliding arboreal mammal distributed throughout Sundaland, was influenced by the location of and connections between forest habitats. By comparing colugo phylogenetic patterns, species ecology, sample distributions, and times of divergence to those of other Sundaic taxa with different life history traits and dispersal capabilities, we inferred the probable distribution of paleo-forest corridors. We identified a consistent pattern of early diversification between east and west Bornean lineages in colugos, lesser mouse deer, and Sunda pangolins. This phylogenetic pattern has not been commonly described in mammals, and we found no evidence for this pattern in the greater mouse deer. Colugos on West Borneo diverged from colugos in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra in the late Pliocene, however most other mammalian populations distributed across these same geographic regions diverged from a common ancestor more recently in the Pleistocene. Low genetic divergence between colugos on large landmasses and their neighboring satellite islands indicated that past forest distributions were recently much larger than present refugial distributions. Our analysis of colugo evolutionary history reveals dynamic forested connections throughout Sundaland, and reconstructs Borneo as the most likely ancestral area of origin for Sunda colugos.

A framework to identify priority wetland habitats and movement corridors for urban amphibian conservation
<p>Core corridors: derived from Circuitscape modeling results -top 50% of wood frog, boreal chorus frog and tiger salamander results converted to binary value and summed to produce core corridors (probable movement for 2-3 amphibian species). <br> <br> To derive core corridors, we summed connectivity models for three amphibian species. For each species we derived focal nodes from high habitat value (based on HSI modelling), used three resistance scenarios and summed the three scenarios for each species to represent probable movement pathways between focal nodes. Species connectivity models were then classified to top 50% of the model, and converted to a binary value of 0 to 1. The three species were summed where by values 0-3 represent number of amphibian species the corridor probably supports movement. </p>
A framework to identify priority wetland habitats and movement corridors for urban amphibian conservation - Raw Data
<p>Call of the Wetland Program observation data reported by citizen scientists at wetlands in the City of Calgary during three amphibian seasons from 2017 to 2019. Wetlands were surveyed up to 11 times per season and participants reported observations to a smartphone application – where they documented species, and type of observation (eggs, adult, juvenile, tadpole or call). Participants also recorded when they participated in a survey and there were no observations. Observations associated without a site ID represent opportunistic observations at non-survey wetlands. This data was used to validate habitat suitability models derived from the occupancy modeling results. <br> <br> Survey wetland location shapefile (centroid point of wetland) also included. </p>
Dataset for: An optimisation approach for designing wildlife corridors with ecological and spatial considerations
<p>The fragmentation of wildlife habitats caused by anthropogenic activities has reduced biodiversity and impaired key ecosystem functions. Wildlife corridors play an important role in linking detached habitats. The optimal design of such corridors considering spatial, ecological, and economic factors is addressed in this paper.</p> <p>We present a novel graph-theoretic optimisation approach and a mixed-integer linear programming model to determine an optimal wildlife corridor connecting two given habitat patches. The model maximises the total quality of the corridor and satisfies pre-specified corridor width and length requirements under a resource constraint.</p> <p>Compared to the corridor design models presented in the literature, our model is conceptually simpler, and it is computationally convenient. We applied the model to a real data set for Eldorado National Forest in California, USA, involving 1,363 irregular land parcels.</p> <p>The model can be extended to design multiple corridors that connect two or more existing habitat patches.</p>
Underlying microevolutionary processes parallel macroevolutionary patterns in ancient Neotropical Mountains - Ecological Niche Modeling and Corridors files
<p><b>Aim</b></p> <p>Ancient climatic fluctuations are invoked as the main driving force that generates the astonishing biodiversity in ancient mountains. As a result, endemism and spatial turnover are usually high and few species are widespread among entire mountain ranges, precluding the understanding of origins of macroevolutionary patterns. Here, we used a species endemic to, but widespread in, one of the most species-rich ancient mountains on the globe to test how environmental changes acted on them and how their macroevolutionary patterns were shaped.</p> <p><b>Location</b></p> <p>Espinhaço Range, Eastern Brazil.</p> <p><b>Taxon</b></p> <p><i>Vriesea oligantha </i>species complex (Bromeliaceae).</p> <p><b>Methods</b></p> <p>We compiled data for plastidial regions and nuclear microsatellites to assess genetic diversity, population structure, migration rates and phylogenetic relationships. Using temperature and precipitation variables we modeled suitable areas for the present and the past, estimating corridors between isolated populations. We also implemented Bayesian demographic analyses to estimate ancient populations dynamics. Finally, we tested if population structure is driven by isolation by environment or by distance using a Bayesian modeling approach.</p> <p><b>Results</b></p> <p>Our results showed that the intraspecific divergence events of <i>V. oligantha</i> are older than those associated with the latest Pleistocene climatic oscillations, supporting the view that Quaternary climatic fluctuations are key components for understanding its population differentiation processes. Species distribution modeling estimated corridors between populations in the past, as also shown in the demographic analyses, depicting a major spatial reorganization during colder climates. Besides, the high genetic structure estimated results from both models of isolation by distance and by environment.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions</b></p> <p><i>V. oligantha</i> is a remarkable model to test the effects of climatic oscillations over the biological community, since this species originated in the early-Pleistocene, prevailing over several cycles of climatic fluctuations until today. The estimated demographic dynamics of <i>V. oligantha</i> agrees with the species-pump mechanism, suggesting it as the main cause of speciation within the Espinhaço Range. Moreover, the phylogeographic patterns of <i>V. oligantha</i> reflect previously recognized spatial and temporal macroevolutionary patterns in the Espinhaço Range, providing insights into how microevolutionary processes may have given rise to this astonishing mountain biodiversity.</p> <p> </p>
The African development corridors database 2022
<p><span>The large-scale expansion of built infrastructure is profoundly reshaping the geographies of Africa, generating</span> lock-in patterns of development for future generations. Understanding the impact of these massive investments can allow development opportunities to be maximised and therefore be critical for attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Africa Union Agenda 2063. However, until now information on the types, scope, and timing of investments, how they have evolved, and their spatial-temporal impact was dispersed amongst various agencies. We developed the first comprehensive database of 79 ongoing and planned investment corridors across Africa, synthesizing data from multiple sources covering 184 projects on railways, wet and dry ports, pipelines, airports, techno-cities, and industrial parks. The georeferenced interlinked tabular and spatial database includes 22 attributes with sources provided for each observation. We expect this database will improve coordination, efficiency, monitoring, oversight, strategic planning, transparency, vulnerability risk, and impact assessments, among other uses for <em>inter alia</em> investment banks, governments, impact assessment practitioners, communities, conservationists, economists, and regional economic bodies.</p>

Pairing functional connectivity with population dynamics to prioritize corridors for Southern California spotted owls
<p><strong>Aim:</strong> Land use change, climate change, and shifts to disturbance regimes make successful wildlife management challenging, particularly when ongoing urbanization constrains habitat and movement. Preserving and maintaining landscape connectivity is a potential strategy to support wildlife responding to these stressors. Using a novel model framework, we determined the population-level benefit of a set of identified potential corridors for spotted owl population viability.</p> <p><strong>Location:</strong> Southern California, United States.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> Combining habitat suitability and dynamic metapopulation models, we compared the benefit of corridors to the Southern California spotted owl population, measured as the increase in the expected minimum abundance, both now and under a future climate. Our approach considered key corridor characteristics important to conservation decisions, namely, corridor irreplaceability and local population network benefit.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We identified two corridors likely to increase Southern California spotted owl expected minimum abundance under current climate conditions. At the regional scale, of the 16 corridors evaluated, one corridor was irreplaceable (i.e. no other corridors in the network could provide a similar increase in abundance when the irreplaceable corridor was removed) and one corridor was identified as redundant (i.e. remaining corridors in the network can provide some of the increases in abundance offered by the removed corridor). Both putative corridors connected two large, populous, and similarly-sized patches. Additionally, we identified two more corridors at the local scale. We found that, under climate change, population declines may limit the benefit of connectivity for a range-restricted species like the spotted owl.</p> <p><strong>Main Conclusions:</strong> Our analytical approach highlights important criteria for corridor identification and prioritization, namely, irreplaceability versus redundancy, local versus regional benefit, and corridor impact in a changing landscape. With the capability of incorporating estimated functional connectivity into population dynamics, our modeling framework advances connectivity decision making for other species of conservation concern and archetypal taxa within ecological communities.</p>
Hazardous and contaminated sites within salt marsh migration corridors in Rhode Island, USA
<p>These data on salt marsh migration corridors and hazardous and contaminated sites in Rhode Island support a project analyzing their overlap for the use of marsh restoration practitioners and HCS remediation specialists. </p> <p>As salt marshes attempt to migrate upland due to sea level rise, they will encounter many kinds of land development and infrastructure in highly populated, urbanized coastal communities. Hazardous and contaminated sites (HCSs) -- facilities and infrastructure that store, use, or release harmful substances -- are particularly concerning obstacles to salt marsh migration because of their potential to release contaminants if their structural integrity is compromised. Inventorying HCSs within migration pathways can inform coastal resilience planning. To understand what kinds of HCSs migrating marsh may encounter in Rhode Island, USA, we inventoried sites from federal and state sources, assigned contaminant hazard rankings to most sites, and overlayed them with projected marsh migration corridors. We found that HCSs are extensive across marsh migration corridors in the state, especially in urban areas. Among the most common HCSs in and around Rhode Island salt marshes are stormwater outfalls, underground storage tanks, and facilities registered with EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or EPA’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). These sites pose varying hazards to human and aquatic life if breached, with some sites representing little or no threat but most posing some degree of hazard to their surroundings. This coastal HCSs inventory can inform prioritization and management of coastal salt marshes subject to accelerated sea level rise. Management decisions such as allowing marsh migration, implementing adaptation actions to build salt marsh elevation, or erecting physical barriers at marsh sites will influence future salt marsh extent, marshes’ ability to provide ecosystem services, and public health exposures to toxic releases. In addition, as Rhode Island and other coastal states work to promote coastal resiliency, this type of inventory can inform decisions about which HCSs to prioritize for remediation and other climate adaptation actions. Marsh migration is just one potential consequence of sea level rise, so many of the considerations outlined here are widely applicable to the broader goal of preparing coastal communities for rising seas.</p>

AALTO - Power Angular Measurements and Ray Tracing Simulations at Sub-THz Frequencies in Corridor - DATA
<p>The data set includes simulation results from radio propagation modelling of TERAWAY links (at 90, 95 and 100 GHz) in realistic university corridor environment. The modelling is performed using a Ray Tracing Tool developed in MATLAB environment at Aalto University. Ray tracing technique used in this tool is based on Image Theory (IT) algorithm. Unlike a quasi three-dimensional environment, it supports ray tracing in full three dimension.</p> <p>This data set contains propagation modelling results of the TERAWAY link. Dataset: Corridor quality buffers extinction under extreme droughts in experimental metapopulations
<p>Corridors with good-quality habitats maintain the spatial dynamics of metapopulations by promoting dispersal between habitat patches, potentially buffering populations and communities against continued global change. However, this function is threatened by habitats becoming increasingly fragmented, and habitat matrices becoming increasingly inhospitable, potentially reducing the resilience and persistence of populations. Yet, we lack a clear understanding of how reduced corridor quality interacts with rates of environmental change to destabilise populations. Using laboratory microcosms containing metapopulations of the Collembola <em>Folsomia candida</em>, we investigate the impact of corridor quality on metapopulation persistence under a range of simulated droughts, a key stressor for this species. We manipulated both drought severity and the number of patches affected by drought across landscapes connected by either good or poor-quality corridors. We measured the time of metapopulation extinction, the maximum rate of metapopulation decline, and the variability of abundance among patches as criteria to evaluate the persistence ability of metapopulations. We show that whilst drought severity negatively influenced the time of metapopulation extinction and the increase in drought patches caused metapopulation decline, these results were mitigated by good quality corridors, which increased metapopulation persistence time and decreased both how fast metapopulations declined and the inter-patch variability in abundances. Our results suggest that enhancing corridor quality can increase the persistence of metapopulations, increasing the time available for conservation actions to take effect, and/or for species to adapt or move in the face of continued stress. Given that fragmentation increases the isolation of habitats, improving the quality of habitat corridors may provide a useful strategy to enhance the resistance of spatially structured populations.</p>
