Heavy migration traffic and bad weather are a dangerous combination: Bird collisions in New York City
<p>Bird-building collisions account for 365-988 million bird fatalities every year in the United States alone. Understanding conditions that heighten collision risk is critical to developing effective strategies for reducing this source of anthropogenic bird mortality. Meteorological factors and regional migration traffic may influence collision rates but also may be difficult to disentangle from other effects. We used 5 years of bird collision counts in New York City to examine the influence of nocturnal weather conditions and bird migration traffic rates on collisions with buildings during spring and fall. We found that seasonally unfavorable winds and conditions that impede visibility are important factors that influence rates of bird-building collisions during both seasons. Specifically, northerly and westerly winds and low visibility in the spring, and southerly and westerly winds and low cloud ceiling height in the fall are associated with higher collision risks. Generally, these weather variables associated most strongly with increased collisions when nocturnal bird migration traffic was high, with the exception of low visibility in spring, which was predicted to triple collision rates compared to high visibility, independent of bird migration traffic. Although legislation to turn off unnecessary nocturnal lighting for the entirety of the migration seasons may be an ultimate goal, a proximate goal invaluable for reducing collisions will be predicting which nights will be of highest risk and using this information to determine when mitigation efforts could be most effective.</p>
Stranger danger: A meta-analysis of the dear enemy hypothesis
<p>The dear enemy hypothesis predicts that territorial individuals will be less aggressive toward known neighbors than to strangers. This hypothesis has been well studied and there is a wealth of data demonstrating its prevelance among some taxa. However, a quantitative synthesis is needed to test the generality of the phenomenon, identify key mechanisms driving the behavior, and guide future research. Here we made a comprehensive collection of Dear Enemy data from 138 studies representing 105 species spread over eight taxonomic classes. The associated paper finds that Dear Enemy is a common phenomenon but drivers of this phenomenon are still understudied and current knowledge is unable to disentangle competing hypotheses of drivers of this behavior.</p>
Comparison of behavioural tendencies between 'dangerous dogs' and other domestic dog breeds – evolutionary context and practical implications
<p>Aggressive behaviour by dogs is a considerable social problem, but the ability to predict which individuals may have increased aggressive tendencies is very limited, restricting the development of efficient preventive measures. There is a common perception that certain breeds are more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviour, which has contributed to the introduction of breed-specific legislation. The rationale for such legislation explicitly assumes high heritability of this trait while also implying relatively little variation within breeds; these assumptions are largely untested. We compared behavioural tendencies between 8 breeds that are subject to legislation in at least one country and 17 breeds that are not subject to legislation using two validated psychometric tools: the Dog Impulsivity Assessment Scale (DIAS), which scores elements of impulsivity, including a tendency for aggressive behaviour, and Positive and Negative Activation Scale (PANAS), which scores sensitivity to positive and negative stimuli (which may trigger aggressive responses). We found that the two groups of breeds do not differ significantly in the specific DIAS factor relating to aggressive behaviour, "Aggression Threshold and Response to Novelty", or any other DIAS and PANAS factors. We found large variation in all behavioural tendencies measured by both psychometric scales within both groups and within each breed studied. Taken together, our findings indicate that breed alone is not a reliable predictor of individual behavioural tendencies, including those related to aggression, and therefore breed-specific legislation is unlikely to be an effective instrument for reducing risk.</p>

Dangerous Items Dataset for 5-Class Object Detection (Pascal VOC annotation)
<p>This repository contains the data from the manuscript "Dangerous Items Detection in Surveillance Camera Images Using Faster R-CNN". It contains 4,000 images representing 5 classes of objects: baseball bat, gun, knife, machete and rifle (<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aG30Hpupctnp8ywhAprz313jmYbFnZk3/view?usp=drive_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aG30Hpupctnp8ywhAprz313jmYbFnZk3/view?usp=drive_link</a>). All images were scaled so that the smaller side is no shorter than 600 pixels and the larger one is no longer than 1,000 pixels. The full set was randomly divided into training and testing parts (75% and 25% of the full set respectively). As a result, the training part contains 3,000 images, and the testing part – 1,000 images. Both parts are balanced, that is, they contain similar number of objects to be detected. Images were annotated using bounding boxes in the Pascal VOC format, according to which the description about each image is included in the corresponding XML file.</p> <p>Using this dataset please cite:<br>Omiotek, Z.
