The basalt unit has a complex magnetization, and we use a 3D magnetic vector inversion on the UAS magnetics to estimate magnetic properties and spatial dimensions of the mineralized unit. Our 3D modelling reveals a horizontal sheet and a strong remanent magnetization component. We highlight the advantage of UAS in rugged terrain.</p> <p> </p>

Trellis-forming stems of a tropical liana Condylocarpon guianense (Apocynaceae): a plant-made safety net constructed by simple "start-stop" development
<p>Data supporting article describing mechanical and structural organisation of a climin g plant trellis system sin the tropical rainforest of French Guiana</p> <p>Tropical vines and lianas have evolved mechanisms to avoid mechanical damage during their climbing life histories. We explore the mechanical properties and stem development of a tropical climber that develops trellises in tropical rain forest canopies. We measured the young stems of <em>Condylocarpon guianensis</em> (Apocynaceae) that construct complex trellises via self-supporting shoots, attached stems and unattached pendulous stems. The results suggest that in this species there is a size (stem diameter) and developmental threshold at which plant shoots will make the developmental transition from stiff young shoots to later flexible stem properties. Shoots that do not find a support remain stiff, becoming pendulous and retaining numerous leaves. The formation of a second TYPE II (lianoid) wood is triggered by attachment, guaranteeing increased flexibility of light-structured shoots that transition from self-supporting searchers to inter-connected net-like trellis components. The results suggest that this species shows a “hard-wired” development that limits self-supporting growth among the slender stems that make up a liana trellis. The strategy is linked to a stem-twining climbing mode and promotes a rapid transition to flexible trellis elements in cluttered densely branched tropical forest habitats. These are situations that are prone to mechanical perturbation via wind action, tree falls and branch movements. The findings suggest that some twining lianas are mechanically fine-tuned to produce trellises in specific habitats. Trellis building is carried out by young shoots that can perform very different functions via subtle development changes in order to ensure a safe space occupation of the liana canopy.</p>
Dataset to Model the Sustainability of a Primary School Digital Education Curricular Reform and Professional Development Program
<p>This dataset contains the quantitative teacher data used to analyse the sustainability of an in-service teacher training program for Digital Education that took place from September 2019 to March 2020 in the Canton Vaud in Switzerland. As such, the study follows up on the 350 teachers over a year after the end of their professional development program had ended in order to model the sustainability of the reform, understand to what extent sustainability had been reached, thus validating the curricular reform model and helping draw recommendations for researchers and practitioners involved in Digital Education curricular reforms. As such, approximately 290 teachers from grades 1-4 in primary school (ages 5-9) responded to two sustainability surveys using web-based questionnaire to provide information relating to their perception of the training sessions and adoption of the computer science activities.</p> <p>The study is accepted for publication in Education and Information Technologies. </p> <p>A README is included and provides additional information regarding :</p> <p>- the requirements for re-use. </p> <p>- the specific content of the 2 csv files</p>

Integrating Co-design activities in agile development
<p>Within the Cos4Cloud project the agile methodologies recommended the instrument of co-design digests. This instrument was intended to form a bridge between co-design and the actual agile development process. During the project, the final process was elaborated closely with the co-design team, and was documented in the project's wiki page.</p> <p>The process includes the following steps:</p> <ul> <li>Set up a co-design digest page in the wiki</li> <li>co-design session is taking place</li> <li>results are collected in a co-design report (as it used to be)</li> <li>essential feedback/requirement will be added to the digest page</li> <li>Note to the developer team to review and update the digest table</li> <li>Developer team refines and decides on each entry in the digest table and links to user</li> <li>stories in their backlog (does not have to be accessible, though)</li> <li>Developer team updates the digest table during development of related user stories</li> <li>(decisions, implementation status, changes to the story, ...)</li> <li>Occasionally development team is reminded to update the digests</li> </ul> <p>Partners were invited to adopt this intermediary step to densify, and evaluate the outcome of co-design sessions before further integrate them into the actual agile development process.</p> <p>For one co-design session 52°North and Science for Change prepared a session where participants were asked to think in user stories. The outcome was a list of user stories which only had to be reviewed and refined. For such sessions the development teams chose to make evaluation and integration into the backlog an ad-hoc task and skipped the extra creation of a digest to avoid duplicated work. A proximity of co-design output and agile input naturally accelerates the intermediary step of a Co-design digest and its integration work or (in the extreme) even makes it superfluous.</p>

<p>The biodegradative capacity of bacteria in their natural habitats is affected by water availability. In this work, we have examined the activity and effector specificity of the transcriptional regulator XylR of the TOL plasmid pWW0 of Pseudomonas putida mt-2 for biodegradation of m-xylene when external water potential was manipulated with polyethylene glycol PEG8000. By using non-disruptive luxCDEAB reporter technology, we noticed that the promoter activated by XylR (Pu) restricted its activity and the regulator<br> became more effector-specific towards head TOL substrates when cells were grown under water subsaturation. Such a tight specificity brought about by water limitation was relaxed when intracellular osmotic stress was counteracted by the external addition of the compatible solute glycine betaine. With these facts in hand, XylR variants isolated earlier as effectorspecificity responders to the non-substrate 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene under high matric stress were re-examined and found to be unaffected by water potential in vivo. All these phenomena could be ultimately explained as the result of water potential-dependent conformational changes in the A domain of XylR and its effector-binding pocket, as suggested by AlphaFold prediction of protein structures. The consequences of this scenario for the evolution of specificities in regulators and the emergence of catabolic pathways are discussed.</p>
Image sets used in the development of a connected auto-encoders based approach to separate mixed X-radiographs from double-sided paintings
<p>The following sets of images were used during the development of an algorithm (described in the publication detailed below) designed to separate the mixed X-radiographs from double-sided paintings into two hypothetical X-ray images corresponding to each side of the painting, when visible images of the two sides of the painting are available.</p> <p>The images sets are taken from a painting that is only painted on one side and were used to assess the regularization parameters associated with the separation approach. The details are taken from the visible image and the X-radiograph of Anthony van Dyck’s painting <em>Lady Elizabeth Thimbelby and Dorothy, Viscountess Andover</em> dated to about 1635 and now in the collection of the National Gallery in London (NG6437). <p>Ensemble Ecological Niche Models for 2019 of 96 European marine species of particular commercial and conservation interest, based on Ecological Niche Models developed with (i) Artificial Neural Networks, (ii) Maximum Entropy, (iii) Support Vector Machines, and (iv) AquaMaps at 0.1° Resolution. The data report, for each 0.1° cell, how many models (from 0 to 4) overcome a model-specific decision threshold to assess species presence in the cell. A Biodiversity Index is also provided as the count of the number of species (among the 96) potentially present in each 0.1° cell according to the ensemble models. For each ensemble model, a threshold of at least 3 models agreeing on species presence in the cell was used to indicate species presence.</p>
CCE LTER process cruise, in the California Current region, event log records including date, time, position and activity for use in post-cruise data integration based on co-sampling indexes. From 2006 to 2019 CCE LTER used a locally developed event logging system. During P2107, CCE LTER started to utilize the R2R Event Logger on UNOL ships, 2006 - 2024 (ongoing).
The event logger program developed and maintained by the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations, SIO, program is used aboard CCE LTER process cruises to create indexes with temporal, spatial and activity information for post-cruise data integration. The event log is configured aboard the ship for the recording of sampling events by both ship crew personnel on the bridge, and research personnel in the lab. The event log is processed post-cruise to correct for various errors.
Effects of climate and exurban development on bird species in the Southern Appalachians
Climate variability and land-use dynamics have important effects on many terrestrial systems, yet very few empirical studies examine both of these. We studied the impacts of building density, forest canopy cover, and mean temperature on bird species occurrence at 140 study sites in the Southern Appalachian Mountains (North Carolina, USA). Point counts conducted during both 2009 and 2011 were used to document the presence of bird species. Building density and forest canopy cover were quantified with remote sensing techniques, and mean temperature was measured with iButtons in the field.

For further information on the instruments used please refer to the paper.</p> <p>The dataset contains data for three waves that was collected between September 2010 and March 2018 in Switzerland by the C-SURF study (<a href="http://www.c-surf.ch/">www.c-surf.ch</a>). Participants were on average 20 years old at wave 1, 21 at wave 2 and 25 at wave 3 when they answered the questionnaires. The final sample size used in the paper is 4746 after excluding those that did not reply to a questionnaire or to a variable of interest for the main analysis.</p> <p>The research protocol for this study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Canton Vaud (Protocol No. 15/07). Data collection was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (FN 33CSC0-122679, FN 33CS30_139467, FN 33CS30_148493).</p>
