Post-hoc labeling of arbitrary EEG recordings for data-efficient evaluation of neural decoding methods

PhytoNode Upgraded: Energy-Efficient Long-Term Environmental Monitoring Using Phytosensing

<p>The urban population continues to grow despite health risks associated with densely populated cities, such as traffic congestion and air pollution. At the same time cities are also further heating up due to climate change. Environmental monitoring is increasingly critical to react quickly to temporarily increased concentrations of, for example, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, and particulate matter.&nbsp;<br>We introduce a significantly improved version of our PhytoNode, an energy-efficient sensor node designed for phytosensing, that is, using of plants as environmental sensors. We aim for a scalable and sustainable real-time monitoring solution following our vision of an `intelligent plant' as an inexpensive and accurate sensor node.&nbsp;<br>We measure electrical potentials and leaf temperatures of plants to assess their well-being and, in turn, environmental conditions.&nbsp;<br>The PhytoNode achieves long-term energy autonomy by harvesting energy via solar cells and shares data via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication. We process the gathered time series plant data onboard in real-time using methods of Machine Learning (ML) to analyze the plant's activity and to detect dangerous concentrations of gases. In a few showcasing experiments, we demonstrate the feasibility of both our hardware and software approach for continuous, long-term environmental monitoring based on phytosensing. By embedding engineered devices in living plants as a `plant wearable' that listens to plant responses, we hope to help pushing towards smarter future cities and healthier urban environments.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Data repository for our paper "PhytoNode Upgraded: Energy-Efficient Long-Term Environmental Monitoring Using Phytosensing", submitted to the 8th Future of Information and Communication Conference 2025 (FICC 2025). The Delayed Box: Biphenyl Bisimide Cyclophane, a Supramolecular Nano‒environment for Efficient Generation of Delayed Fluorescence

<p>Additional data to report <a title="DOI URL" href="https://doi.org/10.1021/jacs.4c07730">https://doi.org/10.1021/jacs.4c07730</a>:</p> <p>Activating delayed fluorescence emission in a dilute solution via a non-covalent approach is a formidable challenge. In this report, we propose a strategy for efficient delayed fluorescence generation in dilute solution using a non-covalent approach via supramolecularly engineered cyclophane-based nanoenvironments that provide sufficient binding strength to &pi;-conjugated guests and that can stabilize triplet excitons by reducing vibrational dissipation and lowering the singlet&ndash;triplet energy gap for efficient delayed fluorescence emission. Toward this goal, a novel biphenyl bisimide-derived cyclophane is introduced as an electron-deficient and efficient triplet-generating host. Upon encapsulation of various carbazole-derived guests inside the nanocavity of this cyclophane, emissive charge transfer (CT) states close to the triplet energy level of the biphenyl bisimide are generated. The experimental results of host&ndash;guest studies manifest high association constants up to 10<sup>4</sup> M<sup>&ndash;1</sup> as the prerequisite for inclusion complex formation, the generation of emissive CT states, and triplet-state stabilization in a diluted solution state. By means of different carbazole guest molecules, we could realize tunable delayed fluorescence emission in this carbazole-encapsulated biphenyl bisimide cyclophane in methylcyclohexane/carbon tetrachloride solutions with a quantum yield (QY) of up to 15.6%. Crystal structure analyses and solid-state photophysical studies validate the conclusions from our solution studies and provide insights into the delayed fluorescence emission mechanism.</p>

(PRE) Socio-economic and cultural dataset in relation to Persuasive Strategies to boost Energy Efficiency and in the UK, Spain, Greece and Austria

<p>The dataset has been created from obtaining answers from 303 participants of four different countries in the EU (the questionnaire can be studied in <strong>GreenSoul_Questionnaire.pdf</strong>). It is composed by several factors which are explained in different TXT files. Simulated dataset (Almeida et al., 2018 - GigaScience) treated with various clustering programs to evaluate ReClustOR efficiency and constitency

<p>ReClustOR is a novel clustering method that overcomes some of the problems associated with classical &lsquo;<em>heuristic&rsquo;</em>clustering methods and consequently increases the stability and quality of the reconstructed OTUs. Moreover, the OTUs database defined with ReClustOR can be used as reference(s) with gradual enrichment of it, with new studies and samples. In this way, huge datasets like<em>&nbsp;</em>the Earth Microbiome Project can be easily used as references for smaller projects, thereby increasing the quality of comparisons between studies and datasets</p> <p>Here, we propose a new approach called ReClustOR (for RE-CLUSTering method using an Open-Reference approach) to improve OTU consistency (see https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2597402). This new strategy combines two of the previously-described clustering methods. Firstly, a classical clustering<em> </em>method (<em>e.g. </em>SWARM, or VSEARCH) is used to define OTU centroids and create a reference database. Secondly, a closed- or open-reference method (depending on the user&rsquo;s choice) is computed for all reads which are not considered as OTU centroids. Contrary to the classical clustering methods, each read is compared to all centroids using a distance-based greedy clustering technique (Edgar, 2010; He et al., 2015), and then assigned to the nearest one, thereby fixing the erroneous assignments of reads to OTUs.</p> <p>To highlight the improvements provided by ReClustOR in describing microbial diversity in terms of ecological diversity metrics (<em>e.g. </em>richness, OTU composition, Shannon, 1/Simpson) and taxonomic composition, a simulated&nbsp;dataset&nbsp;was&nbsp;subjected to: (i) ESV definition, (ii) multiple conventional <em>de novo</em> methods (<em>i.e.</em> a homemade <em>de novo </em>clustering close to CRUNCHCLUST, VSEARCH and SWARM), and (iii) ReClustOR computation. This&nbsp;dataset is a simulated one (Almeida et al., 2018), containing a diverse set of <em>genera</em> commonly found in three ecosystems different ecosystems: human gut, ocean and soil. The clustering methods were compared for: (i) their ability to describe microbial richness, (ii) the congruence between OTU assignments and sequences taxonomy, (iii) the robustness of each defined OTU, and (iv) their ability to efficiently describe the microbial community based on OTU composition.</p> <p>Here, the simulated dataset (00_Raw_data) and all steps of analysis are available to resue them to test ReClustOR, and also to have a better understanding of files and data produced by this program. Nitrogen Input, Nitrogen Surplus, and Nitrogen Use Efficiency Globally and for Selected Regions

<p>Data on nitrogen input,&nbsp;surplus and nitrogen use efficiency&nbsp;are provided globally, and for USA, European Union, China, Brazil and South Asia (i.e.&nbsp;India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan) for 1995 to 2013. Nitrogen input (in the file ninput_1995_2013.csv)&nbsp;is separated into synthetic fertiliser (FERT), manure (MANURE), biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), and NOx deposition from non-agricultural sources (NOx). These N-inputs are for the whole agricultural system, including crops and grassland.&nbsp;Also included is N-surplus (SURPLUS) for cropping systems, which is calculated as the difference between the total N-input and the N removed through harvest. NUE (in the file nue_1995_2013.csv) is N in harvest relative to the total N-input.&nbsp;</p> <p>Synthetic fertilizer application is based on the FAOSTAT dataset (http://www.fao.org/home/en/) with several inputs from the International Fertilizer Association (<a href="https://www.fertilizer.org/">https://www.fertilizer.org/</a>). Total animal excretion is calculated using the FAOSTAT livestock inventory and dynamic excretion factors, biological N fixation is calculated from crop productivities (Anglade et al., 2015)<sup>&nbsp;</sup>and atmospheric deposition was from Dentener et al. (2006). Grassland nitrogen fixation was based on the grassland production estimated following Lassaletta et al. (2016).&nbsp;N in harvested crops is based on crop productivity and N content of 177 crops, utilizing&nbsp;data from the FAOSTAT database.</p>

Role of energy migration in the efficiency of upconversion-based resonance energy transfer to organic acceptors

The sensitivity of biosensors can be improved by optically active materials with anti-Stokes emission, narrowband absorption and emission spectral lines, and long luminescence lifetimes. In contrast to energy reabsorption, energy transfer between the upconversion nanocrystals (UCNPs) and organic dyes attached to their surface can be observed through donor emission quenching and acceptor emission and decreases in the luminescence lifetimes of donors. Although the emission spectra confirmed that FRET occurred from the Er3+ ions to the Rose Bengal acceptor, the luminescence lifetimes were generally not affected by the presence of the acceptor. The Ln3+ dopant in LnNPs, which typically has 20&ndash;100 % Yb3+ sensitizer ions and 0.2&ndash;2% activator (Er3+/Tm3+/Ho3+) ions, results in hundreds to thousands of Ln3+ ions in a single UCNP. The interaction between multiple Ln3+ ions results in significant energy migration and storage in the Yb3+ sensitizer network, which is often recharged with the energy of the Er3+ ions when they emit and nonradiatively transfer their energy to acceptor species. However, the energy transfer mechanisms could not be unambiguously determined through spectroscopic data due to the nature the upconversion process. Studies confirmed that the energy migration distance was significantly shortened when the LnNP surface contained acceptors; this affected the energy storage and &lsquo;recharging&rsquo; capability of the Yb3+ sensitizer network within the UCNPs. These results provide hints on the future use of LnNP as effective FRET probes, in which the highest possible absorption cross section and possibly lowest dopant concentration should be maintained.<br>Keywords: Nanocrystals; Resonance energy transfer; FRET; Monte Carlo; Lanthanide ions</p>
