Data associated with a study on freshwater phenanthrene removal by three emergent wetland plants conducted in a microcosm experiment at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area, ON, Canada, in 2022.

The following package includes data from a study that evaluated the efficacy of three common wetland plants, Typha sp. (cattail), Carex utriculata (sedge a), and C. lasiocarpa (sedge b) in enhancing removal of phenanthrene (1 mg/L) from freshwater in a microcosm experiment conducted at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario, Canada, in 2022. Over 21 days, microcosms were monitored for phenanthrene chemistry, basic water quality, plant growth metrics (height and final biomass), and root biofilm oxygen consumption (respirometry) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Data included in this package was first collected and used in the paper by Stanley et al., titled Freshwater Phenanthrene Removal by three Emergent Wetland Plants.

Emerging fungal pathogen of an invasive grass: Implications for competition with native plant species

This data package includes data and code from an experiment testing the effects of a leaf spot fungal infection and competition from the invasive (to the U.S.) grass Microstegium vimineum on the performance of three native grass species: Dichanthelium clandestinum, Elymus virginicus, and Eragrostis spectabilis. The experiment was performed between June and September of 2019 in a greenhouse on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, FL, USA. The leaf spot infection is caused by the fungal pathogen Bipolaris gigantea, which has recently emerged on populations of M. vimineum in the U.S. We tested the hypothesis that infection of B. gigantea would both directly and indirectly affect the native grass species by measuring the change in biomass of each species with and without pathogen inoculation (direct effects) and by measuring the effect of pathogen inoculation on M. vimineum competition through changes in native grass biomass across a density gradient of M. vimneum (indirect effects). The code includes statistical analyses and figures. The code was run using R (version 4.0.1).

Comparative Study of Data-driven Solar Coronal Field Models Using a Flux Emergence Simulation as a Ground-truth Data Set

<p>For a better understanding of magnetic field in the solar corona and dynamic activities such as flares and coronal mass ejections, it is crucial to measure the time-evolving coronal field and accurately estimate the magnetic energy. Recently, a new modeling technique called the data-driven coronal field model, in which the time evolution of magnetic field is driven by a sequence of photospheric magnetic and velocity field maps, has been developed and revealed the dynamics of flare-productive active regions. Here we report on the first qualitative and quantitative assessment of different data-driven models using a magnetic flux emergence simulation as a ground-truth (GT) data set. We compare the GT field with those reconstructed from the GT photospheric field by four data-driven algorithms. It is found that, at least, the flux rope structure is reproduced in all coronal field models. Quantitatively, however, the results show a certain degree of model dependence. In most cases, the magnetic energies and relative magnetic helicity are comparable to or at most twice of the GT values. The reproduced flux ropes have a sigmoidal shape (consistent with GT) of various sizes, a vertically-standing magnetic torus, or a packed structure with curled field lines. The observed discrepancies can be attributed to the highly non-force-free input photospheric field, from which the coronal field is reconstructed, and to the modeling constraints such as the treatment of background atmosphere, the bottom boundary setting, and the spatial resolution.</p>

A Computational Theory for the Emergence of Grammatical Categories in Cortical Dynamics

<p>The file <strong>Corpora.txt </strong>keeps the corpus used to train the model and the different instances of the classifier. It is basically a text file with one sentence per line from the original corpus called <strong>test.tsv</strong> available at <a href="https://github.com/google-research-datasets/wiki-split.git">https://github.com/google-research-datasets/wiki-split.git</a>. We eliminated punctuation marks and special characters from the original file putting each sentence per line.</p> <p><strong>Enju_Output.txt </strong>holds the outputs generated by Enju in -so mode (Output in stand-off format) using Corpora.txt as input. This file has basically a natural language English per-sentence parse with a wide-coverage probabilistic for HPSG grammar.</p> <p>The file <strong>Supervision.txt </strong>keeps the grammatical tags of the corpus. This file holds a tag per word and each tag is situated in a single line. Sentences are separated by one empty line while tags from words in the same sentence are located in adjacent lines.</p> <p>The file<strong> Word_Category.txt</strong> carries the coarse-grained word category information needed by the model and introduced in it by apical dendrites. Each word in the corpus has a word-category tag which provides additional constraints to those provided by lateral dendrites. This file contains a tag per word and each tag is situated in a single line. Sentences are separated by one empty line while tags from words in the same sentence are located in adjacent lines.</p> <p>The file <strong>SynSemTests.xlsx</strong> keeps all the grammar classification results as well as the statistical analysis in the classification tests.</p>

3DNIV/3DNIV: A Novel Dual Non-Invasive Ventilator Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Non-Aerosolization Circuit for Emergency Use in the COVID-19 Pandemic

<p>The COVID19 pandemic is a public health emergency of unprecedented scale. The surge in clinical cases of patients with severe respiratory illness has overwhelmed the traditional capacity of healthcare systems worldwide. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) delivered through Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) has been shown to be useful in caring for patients with COVID19. In particular patients with early stage milder acute hypoxemic respiratory failure can benefit from NIV CPAP therapy, though there is an acknowledged risk of COVID19 aerosolization with traditional circuit use. Furthermore, given the surge in clinical care demand, there is an acute global shortage of ventilators, including NIV devices and therefore innovative methods are needed to increase NIV capacity and ameliorate infectious aerosolization. This work outlines an emergency use modified dual NIV CPAP Circuit that uses a 3D printed splitter designed to work with traditional international NIV CPAP tubing standards and a 3D printed respiratory face mask knuckle to allow for distal expiratory breath exhalation through a viral filter rather than through an open to air proximal valve, which is the traditional NIV CPAP configuration. We expect that this work will increase global NIV CPAP capacity and ameliorate aerosolization of COVID19 in patients undergoing therapy in an emergency scenario.</p>

AIDER (Aerial Image Dataset for Emergency Response Applications)

<p><strong>AIDER </strong>(<strong>A</strong>erial <strong>I</strong>mage <strong>D</strong>ataset for <strong>E</strong>mergency <strong>R</strong>esponse&nbsp;applications): The dataset construction involved manually collecting&nbsp;all images for four disaster events, namely Fire/Smoke,&nbsp;Flood, Collapsed Building/Rubble, and Traffic Accidents, as&nbsp;well as one class for the Normal case.</p> <p>The aerial images for the disaster events were collected&nbsp;through various online sources (e.g. google images, bing&nbsp;images, youtube, news agencies web sites, etc.) using the&nbsp;keywords &rdquo;Aerial View&rdquo; or &rdquo;UAV&rdquo; or&rdquo;Drone&rdquo; and an event&nbsp;such as&nbsp;Fire&rdquo;,&rdquo;Earthquake&rdquo;,&rdquo;Highway accident&rdquo;, etc. Images&nbsp;are initially of different sizes but are standardized prior to&nbsp;training. All images where manually inspected to first contain&nbsp;the event that was of interested and then to have the event&nbsp;centered at the image so that any geometric transformations during augmentation would not remove it from the image view.&nbsp;During the data collection process the various disaster events&nbsp;were captured with different resolutions and under various&nbsp;condition with regards to illumination and viewpoint. Finally,&nbsp;to replicate real world scenarios the dataset is imbalanced in&nbsp;the sense that it contains more images from the Normal class.</p> <p>This subset includes around 500 images for each disaster class and over 4000 images for the normal class. This makes it an imbalanced classification problem.</p> <p>It is advised to further enhance the dataset that random augmentations are probabilistically applied to each image prior to adding it to the batch for training. Specifically there are a number of possible transformations such as geometric (rotations, translations, horizontal axis mirroring, cropping and zooming), as well as image manipulations (illumination changes, color shifting, blurring, sharpening, and shadowing).</p>

Emergent Cricothyrotomy Training for Non-Surgeons

<p>The video &quot;Emergent Cricothyrotomy Training for Non-Surgeons&quot; reviews two distinct techniques for performing an emergency cricothyrotomy as taught by an otolaryngology surgeon utilizing cadaveric donors. The first method is employable in almost any emergency setting and uses a scalpel, a bougie, and a 6.0 endotracheal tube. The second method uses a cricothyrotomy kit and has a familiar Seldinger technique. The video also reviews more advanced techniques for when the anterior neck anatomy is not easily identifiable. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate these techniques for providers to review at regular intervals to enhance their preparedness and training. Measurement and model data comparisons for the HALO-FAAM formation flight during EMeRGe on 17 July 2017

<p>Within the project &ldquo;Effect of Megacities on the transport and transformation of pollutants on the Regional and Global scales&rdquo; (EMeRGe), the measurement flight of 13 July 2017 was performed for comparison of the instrumentation onboard of the research aircraft HALO and FAAM. The aircraft flew for 1.6 h in close formation along a racetrack pattern at three flight levels in Southern Germany. The flight started in a rather dry and clean troposphere and ended in a more polluted convective boundary layer. 28 measurement pairs sampled on both aircraft were found suitable for comparison. 17 further pairs of data are available from sampling on either HALO or FAAM. In addition, observations obtained at the DWD Hohenpeissenberg and results from 6 models are included in the comparisons. Overall, about 30% of the measured data pairs show deviations within the combined error estimates. Some measurements deviate considerably from model results.</p> <p>This dataset contains a pdf of the report and a zip file of the comparison data as described in that report.</p>

Novelty and emergent patterns in sperm: morphological diversity and evolution of spermatozoa and sperm conjugation in ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

<p>The beetle family Carabidae, with about 40,000 species, exhibits enough diversity in sperm structure and behavior to be an excellent model system for studying patterns and processes of sperm evolution. We explore their potential, documenting<b> </b>sperm form in 177 species of ground beetles using light microscopy and collecting data on 1 qualitative and 7 quantitative sperm phenotypic traits. Our sampling captures 61% of the tribal-level diversity of ground beetles. These data highlight the notable morphological diversity of sperm in ground beetles and suggest that sperm in the group have dynamic evolutionary histories with much morphological innovation and convergence. Sperm vary among species in total length (48–3,400mm), head length (0.5–270mm), and head width (0.2–6.3mm). Most ground beetles make sperm with heads that are indistinct from the flagella at the gross morphological level. However, some or all <i>Omophron</i>,<i>Trachypachus</i>, and Dyschiriini make broad-headed sperm that show morphological differences between species. Most ground beetles package their sperm into groups of sperm, termed conjugates, and ground beetles show variation in conjugate form and in the number and arrangement of sperm in a conjugate. Most ground beetles make sperm conjugates by embedding their sperm in a hyaline rod or spermatostyle. The spermatostyle is remarkably variable among species and varies in length from 17–41,000mm. Several unrelated groups of ground beetles make only singleton sperm, including Nebriinae, Cicindelinae, many Trechinae, and the tribe Paussini. In order to study patterns in sperm evolution, we combine these data with a low-resolution phylogeny of ground beetles. Results from modern comparative analyses suggest the following: sperm differ from conjugates in some aspect of their underlying evolutionary process, sperm have influenced conjugate evolution and vice versa, and conjugation with a spermatostyle likely evolved early within the history of Carabidae and it has been lost independently at least three times.</p>

Well-being at the Frontlines: Leadership Strategies for Building Up Strong Resources Among Emergency Responders: Online Supplement

<p>This is the online supplement for a mixed-methods article on resource-oriented leadership in emergency organizations.</p> <p><em>Abstract:&nbsp;</em>Repeated exposure to extreme events and other demanding missions can erode protective resources among emergency responders, causing health problems that, in turn, jeopardize their readiness and performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this article examines how leaders of emergency responders can systematically maintain and even enhance their subordinates&rsquo; well-being. To identify effective leadership strategies, we conducted in-depth interviews with 25 fire chiefs, 25 platoon leaders, and 26 subordinates from the German fire services. Employing the critical incident technique, we explored leadership processes both during emergency situations and during interim phases (training, standby time, etc.). Person-oriented leadership (developing, group-serving, and caring behavior) was described as fostering various resource gains, while task-oriented leadership (directive and problem-solving behavior) was reported to mitigate resource threats. Moreover, the interviews underscore the importance of interim phases in enhancing well-being. A cross-sectional survey with firefighters and members of a technical relief organization (N = 459) supported the qualitative findings. We integrate our results into a framework that links leadership in emergency organizations to subordinates&rsquo; well-being and readiness in demanding work contexts.
