Data for: Home security cameras as a tool for behavior observations and science equity

<p class="MsoNormal">Reliably capturing transient animal behavior in the field and laboratory remains a logistical and financial challenge, especially for small ectotherms. Here, we present a camera system that is affordable, accessible, and suitable to monitor small, cold-blooded animals historically overlooked by commercial camera traps, such as small amphibians. The system is weather-resistant, can operate offline or online, and allows collection of time-sensitive behavioral data in laboratory and field conditions with continuous data storage for up to four weeks. The lightweight camera can also utilize phone notifications over Wi-Fi so that observers can be alerted when animals enter a space of interest, enabling sample collection at proper time periods. We present our findings, both technological and scientific, in an effort to elevate tools that enable researchers to maximize use of their research budgets. We discuss the relative affordability of our system for researchers in South America, which is home to the largest population of ectotherm diversity.</p>

Data for : Social equity shapes zone-selection: Balancing aquatic biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services delivery in the transboundary Danube River Basin

<p>Freshwater biodiversity is declining, despite national and international efforts to manage and protect <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/freshwater-ecosystem">freshwater ecosystems</a>. Ecosystem-based management (EBM) has been proposed as an approach that could more efficiently and adaptively <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/ecological-balance">balance ecological</a> and societal needs. However, this raises the question of how social and ecological objectives can be included in an <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/integrated-management">integrated management</a> plan. Here, we present a generic model-coupling framework tailored to address this question for freshwater ecosystems, using three components: biodiversity, ecosystem services (ESS), and a spatial prioritisation that aims to balance the spatial representation of biodiversity and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/evolutionarily-stable-strategy">ESS</a> supply and demand. We illustrate this model-coupling approach within the Danube River Basin using the spatially explicit, potential distribution of (i) 85 fish species as a surrogate for biodiversity as modelled using hierarchical Bayesian models, and (ii) four estimated ESS layers produced by the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/artificial-intelligence">Artificial Intelligence</a> for Ecosystem Services (ARIES) platform (with ESS supply defined as <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/carbon-sequestration">carbon storage</a> and flood regulation, and demand specified as recreation and water use). These are then used for (iii) a joint spatial prioritisation of biodiversity and ESS employing Marxan with Zones, laying out the spatial representation of multiple management zones. Given the transboundary setting of the Danube River Basin, we also run comparative analyses including the country-level <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/purchasing-power-parity">purchasing power parity</a> (PPP)-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) and each country&#39;s percent cover of the total basin area as potential cost factors, illustrating a scheme for balancing the share of establishing specific zones among countries. We demonstrate how emphasizing various biodiversity or ESS targets in an EBM model-coupling framework can be used to cost-effectively test various spatially explicit management options across a multi-national case study. We further discuss possible limitations, future developments, and requirements for effectively managing a balance between biodiversity and ESS supply and demand in freshwater ecosystems.</p>

A Modeling Framework for Near-Road Population Exposure to Traffic-Related PM2.5 and Environmental Equity Analysis: A Case Study in Atlanta, Georgia

<p>This is the dataset for the NCST project <em>"A Modeling Framework for Near-Road Population Exposure to Traffic-Related PM2.5 and Environmental Equity Analysis: A Case Study in Atlanta, Georgia"</em> by the Georgia Tech research team.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Here is the abstract of the research:&nbsp;</p> <p>In this study, a modeling framework for population exposure to traffic-related PM2.5 with high spatiotemporal resolution is proposed and applied to the I-575/I-75 Northwest Corridor (NWC) in Atlanta, GA, for environmental equity analysis. &nbsp;The analyses retrieved trip data from the Atlanta Regional Commission&rsquo;s (ARC) Activity-Based Model 2020 (ABM2020), after implementing path retention algorithms (Zhao, et al., 2019) to generate individual travel paths for more than 20 million predicted vehicle trips. &nbsp;Emission rates for each link were retrieved from MOVES-Matrix given the ABM link speed and facility type, the ARC&rsquo;s county-level fleet composition data, and regional fuel properties and I&amp;M program parameters. &nbsp;High-resolution downwind concentration profiles were predicted using EPA&rsquo;s AERMOD microscale dispersion model with AERMET meteorology profiles for a huge array of receptors. &nbsp;Trip-end locations were derived from the ABM trip data, and the on-road trajectories for each person-trip (vehicle trace data) were derived from the travel paths through network. ABM synthetic household and person data were used in demographic assessment, and linked to representative household latitude and longitude locations in the Epsilon 2019 household demographic dataset. &nbsp;Individual exposure to traffic-related PM2.5 in time and space (average hourly concentration) was assessed by overlaying the second-by-second person location profiles (for 24 hours) against the hourly predicted PM2.5 concentration profiles. &nbsp;The analyses summarize the results across 16 demographic groups and the aggregate population exposure are compared to assess potential impact differences across demographics. &nbsp;High-income households in the corridor were exposed to less traffic-related air pollution as they tended to live further from the freeways. &nbsp;The analyses did not reveal large disproportionate negative impacts on low income groups along this specific corridor, but lager disproportionate negative impacts are expected elsewhere in the metro area due to the spatial clustering of income groups along other corridors. Overall, the research demonstrates the applicability of the modeling framework and describes how the various elements (e.g., link screening, dispersion modeling, path tracing, etc.) are optimized on the supercomputing cluster.</p>

THE EFFECT OF CURRENT RATIO, RETURN ON EQUITY, AND DEBT TO EQUITY RATIO ON STOCK RETURNS ON THE INDONESIA STOCK EXCHANGE

<p>This research examined the effect of the Current Ratio, Return on Equity, and Debt to Equity Ratio on Stock Returns in Kompas 100 Companies Listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in the 2015-2019 period. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling. The samples obtained were 30 companies from 100 companies. The type of data used in this research is secondary data, and the method of analysis uses multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the data analysis done, the variable Return on Equity has a positive and significant effect on stock returns. The Current Ratio has a negative and insignificant effect on stock returns, and the Debt to Equity Ratio has a negative and insignificant effect on stock returns. The current ratio, return on equity, and debt to equity ratio simultaneously does not affect stock returns.</p>

Equity, community, and accountability: Leveraging a department-level climate survey as a tool for action

<p>Organizational climate is a key determinant of diverse aspects of success in work settings, including in academia. Power dynamics in higher education can result in inequitable experiences of workplace climate, potentially harming the well-being and productivity of employees. Quantifying experiences of climate across employment categories can help identify changes necessary to create a more equitable workplace for all. We developed and administered a climate survey within our academic workplace—the Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming—to evaluate experiences of climate across three employment categories: faculty, graduate students, and staff. Our survey included a combination of closed-response (e.g., Likert-scale) and open-ended questions. Most department members (82%) completed the survey, which was administered in fall 2021. Faculty generally reported more positive experiences than staff. Graduate students often fell between these two groups, though in some survey sections (e.g., mental health and well-being) students reported the most negative experiences of departmental climate. Three common themes emerged from the analysis of open-ended responses: equity, community, and accountability. We discuss how these themes correspond to concrete action items for improving our departmental climate, some of which have been implemented already, while others constitute future initiatives and/or require a collective push towards systemic change in academia. Finally, service work of this type often falls outside of job descriptions, requiring individuals to either work more or trade-off productivity in other areas that are formally evaluated. With the goal of minimizing this burden for others, we detail our process and provide the materials and framework necessary to streamline this process for other departments aiming to evaluate workplace climate as a key first step in building a positive work environment for all employees.</p>
