Investigating vegetation responses to underground nuclear explosions at the Nevada National Security Site through integrated analysis
Data was collected to determine response of vegetation to underground explosions that occurred in the late 1980s. All samples were collected from the vicinity of the BARNWELL and DISKO ELM test sites of the Nevada National Security Site. Samples were collected from 2017-2018. Soil chemistry was derived from plant root simulator (PRS) probes manufactured by Western Ag Innovations Inc., in Saskatoon; tree ring samples were collected from increment borers; vegetation transect information was collected in the field using transects and quadrants and species were also collected and photographs taken for identification at a later time; soil bulk density samples were collected with a metal cylinder of known volume, weighted, oven-dried and re-weighted to obtain both the wet and dry weight; hyperspectral reflectance data were collected form the foliage of piñon pine tree species using a hyperspectral camera (FieldSpec 4, Analytical Spectral Devices, Inc (ASD)). Data from: The ecological and genomic basis of explosive adaptive radiation
<p>Rates of speciation vary tremendously among evolutionary lineages, with our understanding of what fuels the rapid succession of speciation events within young adaptive radiations remaining particularly incomplete. The cichlid fish family provides the most notable example of such variation among extant metazoans. It includes many slowly speciating lineages as well as the several exceptionally large and rapid adaptive radiations. By reconstructing a large phylogeny of all described cichlid species, we show that explosive speciation is solely concentrated in several large yet young lake species flocks. Across the family, speciation rate increases are associated with absence of top predators, and speciation rate decreases are associated with arid climate, but these factors are not nearly sufficient to explain explosive speciation in lake radiations, in particular the Lake Victoria adaptive radiation. Across lake radiations we observe a positive relationship between speciation rate and enrichment with large indel polymorphisms. Assembly of one hundred Victorian cichlid genomes comprising all extant ecological guilds and taxonomic genera reveals this radiation contains exceptional 'genomic potential' - hundreds of ancient haplotypes bearing indel polymorphisms, many of which are strongly associated with specific ecologies and are shared with ecologically similar species from other older lake radiations elsewhere in Africa. Network analysis reveals fundamentally non-treelike evolution through recombining old haplotypes, with origins of ecological guilds concentrated early in the Victoria radiation. Our results suggest that the combination of ecological opportunity, sexual selection and exceptional genomic potential is the key to understanding explosive adaptive radiation.</p>
STL Fast Decompression Experiment Data for "Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows"
<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>This data is camera images and pressure gauge and RF antenna voltage traces from rapid decompression shots at the STL shock tube facility. </p> <p>This data is used in figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 and corresponds to the STL shots listed in table S1 of the paper "Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows".</p> <p>Electric sparks and explosive flows have long been associated with each other. Flowing dust particles originate charge through contact and separate based on inertia, resulting in strong electric fields supporting sparks. These sparks can cause explosions in dusty environments, especially those rich in carbon, such as coal mines and grain elevators. Recent observations of explosive events in nature and decompression experiments indicate that supersonic flows of explosions may alter the electrical discharge process. Shocks may suppress parts of the hierarchy of the discharge phenomena, such as leaders. In our decompression experiments, a shock tube ejects a flow of gas and particles into an expansion chamber. We imaged an illuminated plume from the decompression of a mixture of argon and <100 mg of diamond particles and observe sparks occurring below the sharp boundary of a condensation cloud. We also performed hydrodynamics simulations of the decompression event that provide insight into the conditions supporting the observed behavior. Simulation results agree closely with the experimentally observed Mach disk shock shape and height. This represents direct evidence that the sparks are sculpted by the outflow. The spatial and temporal scale of the sparks transmit an impression of the shock tube flow, a connection that could enable novel instrumentation to diagnose currently inaccessible supersonic granular phenomena.</p> <p><strong>Accessing Data</strong></p> <p>The prefixes of the filenames correspond to the shot dates and approximate times listed in table S1 of the paper. </p> <p>The "_SA4.zip" and "_SA3.zip" files contains tiff images of the SA4 and SA3 camera frames, respectively. The ".cih" file in each zip lists camera settings in plain text.</p> <p>The "OscilloscopeData.zip" contains files with prefixes corresponding to the shot dates and times listed in table and the diagnostic name. Files ending in ".csv" contain raw data and ".pdf" contain plots of the respective data. For pressure data, 1 V = 100 psi.</p>
Data from: Dispensing pollen via catapult: explosive pollen release in mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia)
The astonishing amount of floral diversity has inspired countless assumptions about the function of diverse forms and their adaptive significance; yet many of these hypothesized functions are untested. We investigated an often-repeated adaptive hypothesis about how an extreme floral form functions. In this study, we conducted four investigations to understand the adaptive function of explosive pollination in Kalmia latifolia, the mountain laurel. We first performed a kinematic analysis of anther movement. Second, we constructed a heat map of pollen trajectories in three-dimensional space. Third, we conducted field observations of pollinators and their behaviors while visiting K. latifolia. Finally, we conducted a pollination experiment to investigate the importance of pollinators for fertilization success. Our results suggest that insect visitation dramatically improves fertilization success and that bees are the primary pollinators that trigger explosive pollen release.
