Fish tagging data (length, weight, tag number) from the Kuparuk, the Sagavanirktok (primarily Oksrukuyik Creek) and the Itkillik (primarily the I-Minus outlet stream) watersheds, 2009 - 2017
Since 2009, the FISHSCAPE Project (grant number 1719267, 1417754, and 0902153), based at Toolik Field Station, has monitored physical, chemical, and biological parameters within three watersheds: The Kuparuk (including Toolik Lake and Toolik outlet stream); The Sagavanirktok (primarily Oksrukuyik Creek, but also including sections of the Ailish and Atigun Rivers and the Galbraith Lakes); and The Itkillik (primarily the I-Minus outlet stream, a tributary that that feeds into the Itkilik River). Target species were primarily Arctic grayling and Lake trout, although Arctic char, Burbot, Dolly varden, round whitefish, and slimey sculpin were also captured. Fish were collected on each river/lake. Coordinates and/or specific station locations were noted. All fish captured during the field season are measured, weighed, tagged (if large enough) and released. If fish were not previously tagged, they were tagged with Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags which can be read with a whole stream antenna to track the migration of the fish, predminately Arctic grayling, throughout the systems.

Fish and consumer data collected from Northeast Shark Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE) from September 2006 to September 2008
Three 1m2 throwtrap sites were selected randomly within a few meters of the location. All fish and macroinvertebrates were sampled within each trap using a seine; the trap is determined to be clear of fish and macroinvertebrates once three empty seines are recovered. The count is reset whenever a fish or invertebrate is caught. Once the trap is determined to be clear, five sweeps are done using a couple of nets. The count resets whenever fish is caught, while an extra sweep is added whenever an invertebrate is captured. The trap is finally cleared once the fifth sweep doesn't capture any organisms. All captured organisms are anesthesized in a plastic cup filled with water and MS222; they are then preserved using a 10% formaldehyde solution for identification and archiving in the lab
Standard Lengths and Mean Weights for Prey-base Fishes from Taylor River and Joe Bay Sites, Everglades National Park (FCE), South Florida from January 2000 to April 2004
Prey-base fishes. The small demersal fishes of the coastal wetlands are a keystone element in this ecosystem. They are the primary and secondary consumers of the plants mentioned above and they are the primary food resource for myriad piscine (e.g. game species of fish), reptilian (e.g. juvenile crocodiles) and avian (e.g. wading birds) predators. The community dynamics of these fishes are dictated by hydrologic and hydrographic parameters so they also respond predictably to water management practices. Because they are a bottle-neck in the food web, their abundance and availability dictate the success of higher trophic levels. Fish are sampled in June, September and monthly from November through April at five locations. A 9m2 drop trap designed specifically for this habitat are used to quantify fish use. Nine traps are used at each site.
Fish community data obtained from Antillean-Z fish trap deployment in the Eastern Gulf of Shark Bay, Australia from June 2013 to August 2013
This dataset consists of capture data of teleost communities caught in Antillean-Z fish traps deployed in 2013. Also included are anciliary environmental data as well as trap deployment information. This dataset will be used to determine changes in teleost community structure and abundance in response to an extreme temperature event and associated decline in seagrass cover in Shark Bay, Western Australia.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Long-term Population and Community Dynamics: Fishes, ongoing since 2005
These data describe the estimated species abundances and individual sizes of fishes surveyed in late July or early August of each year by researchers associated with the Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research site. This study began in 2005, and the dataset is updated annually. Divers using SCUBA estimate the number and total length (total body length to the greatest precision possible) of all mobile and semi-cryptic fishes observed on four 50m long transects within each of the three principal habitat types, fore reef, back reef, and fringing reef, found around Moorea. These three habitats are each surveyed at six permanently marked sites, two sites on each of Moorea's three shores, yielding a total of 18 unique habitats (3) by location (6) combinations and 72 transects. Estimated total lengths are converted to estimates of species biomass using published length-weight relationships for each species. Data from the initial survey conducted in 2005 are presented in a separate data table as the protocol used in 2005 differed from the standard protocol adopted in 2006, and no estimates of fish body lengths were made in 2005. These data are a component of the MCR LTER core time series program and provide insight into the spatial and temporal patterns of reef fish abundance and biomass around the island of Moorea, French Polynesia.
Diet composition for small pelagic fishes across the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf for NES-LTER, ongoing since 2013
These data represent the diet composition of small pelagic fishes assessed by the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) project. The six species of fish in this dataset represent a subset of the species collected in bottom trawls conducted by the NOAA Fisheries Northeast Ecosystems Surveys from Cape Hatteras to the Gulf of Maine. Sampling occurred in the Spring and Fall seasons. Fish were frozen and stomach content analyses were conducted by the Fisheries Oceanography and Larval Fish Ecology Lab at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Data are counts and length measurements for prey items examined under a dissecting microscope. Prey species were matched to the lowest taxonomic level in the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) for scientific name and taxonomic serial number. The dataset was supplemented with geospatial and temporal information from NOAA Fisheries trawl databases.
Landscape Position Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Fish 1998 - 1999
As part of the Landscape Position Project, we conducted fish sampling on each of 26 lakes using a variety of gear types. Sampling was conducted beginning in the 3rd week in June and running through the endof July in 1998. In 1999, sampling was conducted from early July through August. We used vertical gillnets of various mesh sizes (19, 32, 51, 64, 89-mm stretch mesh) to sample pelagic fishes. The nets were fished in the deep basin of each lake for one diel cycle. We used fyke nets to sample fishes in the shallow near shore areas. Three nets were set, one each at differing locations defined by substrate type (muck, sand and cobble) for one diel cycle. Three crayfish traps were set along side each of the fyke nets. We performed electrofishing over two, 30 minute transects along the near shore area between 0.3 and 1.5-m in depth. WDNR Yahara Lakes Fisheries: Fish Lengths and Weights 1987-1998
These data were collected by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) from 1987-1998. Most of these data (1987-1993) precede 1995, the year that the University of Wisconsin NTL-LTER program took over sampling of the Yahara Lakes. However, WDNR data collected from 1997-1998 (unrelated to LTER sampling) is also included. In 1987 a joint project by the WDNR and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Center for Limnology (CFL) was initiated on Lake Mendota. The project involved biomanipulation of fish communities within the lake, which was acheived by stocking game fish species (northern pike and walleye). The goal was to induce a trophic cascade that would improve the water clarity of Lake Mendota. See Lathrop et al. 2002. In collecting these data, the objective was to gather population data and monitor populations to track the progress of the biomanipulation. The data is dominated by an assesssment of the game fishery in Lake Mendota, however other Yahara Lakes and non-game fish species are also represented. A combination of gear types was used to gather the population data including boom shocking, fyke netting, mini-fyke netting, seining, and gill netting. Not every sampling year includes length and weight data from all gear types. The WDNR also carried out randomized, access-point creel surveys to estimate fishing pressure, catch rates, harvest, and exploitation rates. Five data files each include length-weight data, and are organized by the type of gear or method which was used to collect the data: 1) fyke, mini-fyke, and seine netting 2) boom shocking 3) gill netting (1993 only) 4)walleye age as determined by scale and spine analysis (1987 only), and 5) creel survey. This dataset describes long-term (1944-2012) variations in the relative abundance of fish populations representing nine species in Wisconsin lakes. Data were collected by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource fisheries biologists as part of routine lake fisheries assessments. Landscape Position Project at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Fish Growth and Mercury Contaminant Data 1998 - 1999
As part of the Landscape Position Project, yellow perch were collected for mercury and isotope analysis by a combination of angling, beach seining, vertical gill net, fyke net and electrofishing in the summers of 1998 and 1999. A total of 86 yellow perch from 25 lakes were analyzed. Scales were used to determine age and length at ages 1 to 3 years. The nitrogen stable isotope signature indicates the relative food-web position of the fish relative to cladocerans collected from the same lake. SBC LTER: Reef: Benthic Composition Experiment: fish, algal, and invertebrate density
These data describe the average size and abundance of fishes, understory algae, and benthic invertebrates across 5 sampling sites (Arroyo Quemado, Naples, Isla Vista, Mohawk, Carpentaria) along the Santa Barbara Coast and 2 sites at Santa Cruz Island (San Pedro Point, and Cavern Point). Sampling began September 2021 and is conducted seasonally every 3 months. Data are collected within two circular plots at each sampling site. Plot 1 represents the control plot with no giant kelp removal and plot 2 represents the kelp clearing plot where all giant kelp are removed. Additionally, understory algae are removed seasonally from half of the rock plates for both plots (Plot 1 rock plates #1-6 and Plot 2 rock plates #13-18).

These data describe the monthly survey on the abundance and size of fish species, as part of SBCLTER's kelp forest monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This study began in 2000 in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. The abundance and size of all taxa of resident kelp forest fish encountered along permanent transects are recorded at three reef sites (Arroyo Burro, Arroyo Quemado, Mohawk) located along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel. In these surveys, fish were counted in 40x2m benthic quadrat, and in the water parcel 0-2m off the bottom over the same area.
SBC LTER: Reef: Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: Fish abundance
These data describe the abundance and size of fish species as part of SBCLTER's kelp forest monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This study began in 2000 in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. The abundance and size of all taxa of resident kelp forest fish encountered along permanent transects are recorded at nine reef sites located along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel and at two sites on the north side of Santa Cruz Island. These sites reflect several oceanographic regimes in the channel and vary in distance from sources of terrestrial runoff. In these surveys, fish were counted in either a 40x2m benthic quadrat, or in the water parcel 0-2m off the bottom over the same area. The table in this data package documented the annual benthic fish community survey which was conducted once a year around late July or early August. The time period of data collection for the annual benthic fish community survey varied among the 11 kelp forest sites. Sampling at BULL, CARP, and NAPL began in 2000, sampling at the other 6 mainland sites (AHND, AQUE, IVEE, GOLB, ABUR, MOHK) began in 2001 (transects 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 at IVEE were added in 2011). Data collection at the two Santa Cruz Island sites (SCTW and SCDI) began in 2004. The monthly fish survey at ABUR (Transect 1, 2, and 3), AQUE (Transect1), and MOHK (Transect 1) in 2002. The Transect 2 and 3 at ABUR were discontinued in June 2006. See Methods for more information.
SBC LTER: Reef: Seasonal Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: Fish abundance
These data describe the abundance and size of reef-associated fish within permanent plots of SBCLTER's seasonal kelp forest monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. The number, size and species identity of reef fish were recorded within a 2 m wide swath centered along a 40 m long transect extending up to 2 m off the bottom. Fish size was measured as total length estimated to the nearest cm. The experiment was initiated in 2008 at five reef sites along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel.
