The draft scientific opinion was prepared by the EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM Panel), supported by the Working Group on Glycoalkaloids in feed and food. Data from: Estimating contributions of pelagic and benthic pathways to consumer production in coupled marine food webs
1. Pelagic and benthic systems usually interact, but their dynamics and production rates differ. Such differences influence the distribution, reproductive cycles, growth rates, stability and productivity of the consumers they support. Consumer preferences for, and dependence on, pelagic or benthic production are governed by the availability of these sources of production and consumer life history, distribution, habitat, behavioural ecology, ontogenetic stage and morphology. 2. Diet studies may demonstrate the extent to which consumers feed on prey in pelagic or benthic environments. But they do not discriminate benthic production directly supported by phytoplankton from benthic production recycled through detrital pathways. The former will track the dynamics of phytoplankton production more closely than the latter. 3. We develop and apply a new analytical method that uses carbon (C) and sulfur (S) natural abundance stable isotope data to assess the relative contribution of pelagic and benthic pathways to fish consumer production. 4. For 13 species of fish that dominate community biomass in the northern North Sea (estimated >90% of total biomass), relative modal use of pelagic pathways ranged from <25% to >85%. Use of both C and S isotopes as opposed to just C reduced uncertainty in relative modal use estimates. Temporal comparisons of relative modal use of pelagic and benthic pathways revealed similar ranking of species dependency over four years, but annual variation in relative modal use within species was typically 10-40%. 5. For the total fish consumer biomass in the study region, the C and S method linked approximately 70% and 30% of biomass to pelagic and benthic pathways respectively. As well as providing a new method to define consumers' links to pelagic and benthic pathways our results demonstrate that a substantial proportion of fish biomass, and by inference production, in the northern North Sea is supported by production that has passed through transformations on the seabed.
Optimising nature conservation outcomes for a given region-wide level of food production
<ol> <li>The land sharing-sparing framework aims to quantify the trade-off between food production and biodiversity conservation, but it has been criticised for offering, for reasons of simplicity, an unrealistically limited set of different land uses.</li> <li>Here, we develop the framework to evaluate a much larger suite of land-use strategies in which the areas and yields of three land-use compartments, natural habitat, high-yield farmland, and lower-yield farmland, are varied simultaneously. For two regions of England, we use functions that relate the local population density of breeding bird species to farm yield to simulate species-specific region-wide population sizes under each strategy.</li> <li>We find that geometric mean population size, averaged across all species, is maximised when farmland yields are higher than the current average yield, and when spared land combines both natural habitat and low-yield farmland. This conclusion is relatively insensitive to the maximum yield considered feasible under extreme land sparing, and holds across a range of region-wide food production targets. </li> <li>To some extent, our conclusion depends on which species groups were included in the assessment. Considered alone, farmland birds preferred a strategy with little or no natural habitat. Nonetheless, the optimal strategy was broadly consistent across all widely-recognised listings of species of conservation concern.</li> <li>Synthesis and applications. Our study looks at landscapes with a long history of agricultural use, and which have little remaining natural habitat, such as those found in lowland England. In these landscapes, conservation outcomes are likely to be maximised by mixed strategies in which high-yield production enables an increase in area of both natural habitat and low-yield farmland elsewhere in the region. </li> </ol>
A data driven network approach to rank countries production diversity and food specialization
<p>This file explains the database, that can be freely downloaded, used in the work A data driven network approach to rank food complexity and countries production diversity?(arXiv:1606.01270v1) by Chengyi Tu, Joel Carr and Samir Suweis. If you use the data, please cite the article. The file OrganizeData.xlsx includes bipartite adjacency matrix, both binary (b) and weighted (w) in tons of food, describing the food commodities produced (country-product), imported (country-import) and exported (country-export) by the considered countries from the year 1992 to the year 2011. GDP data are easily available from UN (http://data.un.org/Data.aspx?d=WDI&f=Indicator_Code%3ANY.GDP.MKTP.CD) or worldbank (http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD) website. From these data the results on the Minimum Spanning Forest and on the country fitness and food specialization can be reproduced.</p>

Food production and biodiversity are not incompatible in temperate heterogeneous agricultural landscapes
<p>We need landscape-scale approaches to design and manage agro-ecosystems that can sustain both agricultural production and biodiversity conservation. In this study, yield figures provided by 299 farmers served to quantify the energy-equivalents of food production across different crops in 49 1-km<sup>2</sup> landscapes. Our results show that the relationship between bird diversity and food energy production depends on the proportion of farmland within the landscape, with a negative correlation observed in agriculture dominated landscapes (≥ 64–74% farmland). In contrast, neither typical farmland birds nor butterflies showed any significant relationship with total food energy production. We conclude that in European temperate regions consisting of small-scale, mixed farming systems (arable and livestock production), productivity and biodiversity conservation may not be purely antagonistic, particularly when (semi-)natural habitats make up a large fraction of the landscape (≥ 20%).</p>
Annexes from the paper A Hybrid Methodology for the Facility Re-Layout Problem (FRLP) of Food Production Systems in Industry 5.0 Context
<p>In the attached dataset we present all the data collected and obtained in the case study of our model to improve the redistribution of food production plants. The importance of the attached data lies in the fact that they consist of real data collected in a small snack production plant located in the northern part of Ecuador, and were used to validate the methodology proposed in the article entitled: "A Hybrid Methodology for the Facility Re-Layout Problem (FRLP) of Food Production Systems in Industry 5.0 Context", which is currently in the publication stage.</p>
