Guardians of the Ishtar Gate
Plaster Cast Pergamon Museum, Berlin Original: Alabaster, 9th cent. BCE, Kalhu/Nimrud [Iraq), British Museum (England) The entrance to the so-called "Palace Room" is guarded by two human-headed hybrid creatures, known in Akkadian as lamassu. The original from which the casts shown here were taken was discovered in the palace of the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II (883-859 BCE) in Nimrud and is now in the British Museum. Lamassu have the body of a lion or a bull, they usually have wings, and they wear the horned crown that identifies them as supernatural beings. One foreleg of the creature is shown twice: seen from the front, it appears to be standing still; seen from the side it appears to be walking. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Dvarapala (Guardian Figure), 8th century CE
Dvarapala (Guardian Figure), 8th century CE, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From the sculptures description on [artsmia.org](www.artsmia.org): *'Guardian figures called Dvarapala were located at entrances to Buddhist cave sanctuaries and temple compounds where they acted to thwart any forces opposing Buddhist thought. As such, they were dramatically depicted in vigorous poses with threatening facial expressions and exaggerated muscular structure ready to confront all threats. Typically made in pairs, one Dvarapala will be represented as uttering the cosmic sound "a" (open mouthed) and the other, as the case is here, the sound "un" with a closed mouth. These sounds are the first and last letters of the Sanskrit alphabet symbolizing the beginning and end of all things, reminding us of the brevity of life.'* More information [here](https://collections.artsmia.org/art/100842/dvarapala-china) Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
