The lightest blue hue represents a present-day water depth of <120 m, indicating areas exposed as land during the most recent cyclical sea level fluctuations of the Quaternary. Note that Nias may have briefly been connected to Sumatra via a narrow ridge to the north during those periods when sea level was at its lowest. The localities of field sites where mist-netting was conducted, including Pulau Asu and Pulau Bawa of the Hinako Archipelago, are labelled on the map.
