Plant aboveground biomass data: Long-Term Nitrogen Deposition During Grassland Succession

The purpose of this experiment is to measure how initially disturbing an area and adding nitrogen over a long time will affect the number of species, the type of species present, the amount of annual growth, and the change from year to year in the growth of each species in a plant community which is also relieved of grazing by large and small mammals. This experiment is conducted within fields (A, B, and C) which were initially low in soil nutrients. The ground was disturbed by thoroughly disking the area prior to establishment of the experiment. There are 8 different levels of nitrogen addition with other nutrients added to ensure that nitrogen remains the limiting nutrient, and a control which receives no nutrients. Nitrogen fertilizer (NH4NO3) is applied twice per year, once in early May and once in late June. There are six replicates of each treatment per field. The treatments were randomly assigned to plots of size 4 by 4 meters. The plots are in 6 plot by 9 plot grids with 1 meter aisles between plots. The plot grids are enclosed by a fence to keep out mammalian herbivores. Gophers are trapped and removed as they appear. In the spring of 1992, subexperiments E097 and E098 were established. E097 is in fields A and C where randomly selected plots within each treatment no longer receive fertilizer. E098 is in field B where randomly selected plots within each treatment are burned. Note that the design of E002 is similar to E001 except E002 was thoroughly disked prior to establishment.

Baseline soil chemistry data measurements from the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx)

SALTEx (Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment) is a field experiment designed to simulate saltwater intrusion in a tidal freshwater wetland to predict how chronic (Press) and acute (Pulse) salinization will affect this and other tidal freshwater ecosystems. The SALTEx experiment was initiated in 2012 and consists of 31 field plots, each 2.5 m on a side. There are three treatments (Press, Pulse, and Fresh) and two types of controls (with and without sides), each consisting of six replicates. The Press treatment plots receive regular (4 times each week) additions of a mixture of seawater and fresh river water. Pulse plots receive the same mixture of seawater and river water during September and October, which is historically a time of low flow in the river when natural saltwater intrusion occurs. The Fresh treatment plots receive regular additions of fresh river water. Treatment water is added during low tide to facilitate its infiltration into the soil, and all plots are inundated by astronomical tides at high tide. Soils were destructively sampled before the beginning of the experiment (March 2014) and after approximately 3 years of treatments (December 2016) and analyzed for bulk density, percent carbon, percent nitrogen, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, available nitrate, and available ammonium.

El Verde long-term invertebrate data - Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFDP)

The data set consists of 44 files: (1) abundance data for the walking stick, Lamponius portoricensis, (2) estimates of abundance (Minimum Number Known Alive) for 17 species of terrestrial snails, and (3) 42 files containing data on size and mark-recapture estimates of population size for the snails Caracolus caracolla and Nenia tridens from the Wet Season of 1995 to the Wet Season of 2019 (no dry season data for 1995 or after 2012). Note: MNKA estimates are not always identical to the number of individuals indicated in the Mark-Recapture data, because some individuals (e.g., those that were lost before being marked) had to be excluded from calculations for Mark-Recapture estimates of abundance. Note, no data were collected in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Long-Term Elevation Plots (LTEP) (Altitudinal transects vegetation data along three rivers in the Luquillo Experimental Forest)

The composition of plant communities changes with elevation in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF). The goal of this project is to document the patterns of these changes, and in particular, to determine whether the distributions of individual species are independent of one another, or whether they are related, in either a congruent or a hierarchical manner. Thirty-two permanent vegetation plots, each 50m by 20m are being established in the LEF, with 5 plots along the Icacos river, 11 along the Mamayes river and 16 along the Sonadora stream. The plots were established at every 100m in elevation, starting at 200m above sea level. All woody, free-standing stems greater than 1cm dbh were marked, identified and mapped into 5x5 subquadrats. We anticipated that gradient analysis will show whether the distributions of species are coincident or independent, enabling us to evaluate whether separate, genuine plant communities exist in the LEF. Because the plots are permanent, we also expected that they allow us to better evaluate how different vegetation types, at different elevations, respond to large scale disturbances, especially hurricanes. To investigate the underlying cell organisation principles of organoids, we imaged hundreds of pancreas and cholangio carcinoma organoids in parallel using light sheet and bright field microscopy for up to seven days.</p> <p><em>Results</em></p> <p>We quantified organoid behaviour at single-cell (microscale), individual-organoid (mesoscale), and entire-culture (macroscale) levels. At single-cell resolution, we monitored formation, monolayer polarisation and degeneration, and identified diverse behaviours, including lumen expansion and decline (size oscillation), migration, rotation and multi-organoid fusion. Detailed individual organoid quantifications lead to a mechanical 3D agent-based model. A derived scaling law and simulations support the hypotheses that size oscillations depend on organoid properties and cell division dynamics, which is confirmed by bright field microscopy analysis of entire cultures.</p> <p><em>Conclusion</em></p> <p>Our multiscale analysis provides a systematic picture of the diversity of cell organisation in organoids by identifying and quantifying the core regulatory principles of organoid morphogenesis.</p>

Data from: Long-term effects of meadow management on seed bank diversity and composition

<p>Aims: Oligotrophic grasslands are habitats that host among the most diverse plant communities in Europe. Altering management regimes by either intensifying or ceasing management is known to decrease plant diversity. Yet, despite its importance for the recovery of plant communities after disturbances, little is known about whether seed banks are also affected by changes in management. Here, we investigate the effect of management practices on a meadow seed bank using a long-term manipulative experiment. We focus on the response of the seed bank to the treatments, and the relationship between the seed bank and the vegetation response.</p> <p>Methods: The study was conducted in a species-rich wet meadow. The experiment consists of a factorial combination of fertilization, mowing, and removal of the dominant species. After 20 years of management, the seed bank was sampled seasonally at two soil layer depths. Standing vegetation was recorded in June at the peak of vegetation.</p> <p>Results: All seed bank characteristics varied between soil layers. Mowing decreased seed density and diversity, while fertilization significantly affected the species composition. Dominant removal had no effect on the seed bank. While seed bank diversity was not correlated to vegetation diversity, individual species&rsquo; responses to mowing and fertilization were positively correlated in the seed bank and the vegetation.</p> <p>Conclusions: Our results show that long-term management influences the seed bank down to 10 cm of soil depth. Whereas mowing apparently reduced seed density and diversity, the effects of fertilization on these characteristics were harder to interpret. After 20 years, most species had concordant responses to both mowing and fertilization, indicating a low legacy of previous management regimes on the seed bank. Our study reveals that the intensification of grassland management has a profound effect on plant diversity by directly affecting plant communities and their seed bank-driven recovery potential.</p>

The temperate coral <em>Cladocora&nbsp;caespitosa</em> is the only zooxanthellate coral with reef-building capacity in the Mediterranean Sea, a climate change hotspot with warming rates triple the global average. Over the past two decades, <em>C. caespitosa</em> populations have suffered severe mortality events associated with marine heatwaves (MHWs). However, with monitoring efforts beginning, at best, in the 2000s, the occurrence of MHWs before to that period, as well as the sub-lethal effects of these events remain poorly understood. Here we use sclerochronology to reconstruct the histories of past stress events and long-term sub-lethal effects on <em>C. caespitosa</em> in three locations within the NW Mediterranean Sea, each with different environmental conditions. Skeletal extension, density and calcification rates were compared to the <em>in situ</em> seawater temperature of each site to assess their relationship. Additionally, we assessed the occurrence of skeletal growth anomalies to reconstruct stress events between 1991 and 2021, a period that encompasses the onset and evolution of warming-related mass mortality events in the NW&nbsp;Mediterranean Sea. Our results reveal a positive association between calcification and temperature, following a latitudinal temperature gradient. However, the evolution of the likelihood distribution of growth rates in the warmest site (Columbretes Islands) since the 1990s indicates a decrease in linear extension and calcification rates during the most recent years. With the increase in the frequency of MHWs and growth anomalies during the last decade, this decline suggests a recurrence in physiological stress events. FISHPASS ASSESSMENT PLAN LONG-TERM MONITORING OF HYDROLOGIC AND WATER QUALITY DATA

The Great Lakes Fishery Commissions’ (GLFC) FishPass project seeks to reconnect the waterscape for only desired species (i.e., selective passage) by integrating a multitude of existing and novel passage techniques and technologies. The probability of a fish passing through a sorting system is dependent on environmental conditions and a fish’s motivation ─ its internal state in relation to environmental stimuli. While fish decision making abilities introduce complexity to the sorting operations, they also provide an opportunity to exploit behavioral tendencies and abilities to achieve selective sorting. The FishPass Assessment Plan details a monitoring program aimed at quantifying fish movement and sorting capabilities associated with both individual mechanisms and integrated sorting systems. The results of the monitoring program will be used to inform future adjustments to the selection of techniques and technologies and their configuration to optimize passage of desirable species while blocking and/or removing undesirable species. A key component to the Assessment Plan is the long-term monitoring of abiotic variables in and around FishPass. This data set contains the hydrologic (e.g., river discharge, water level) and water quality data (e.g., temperature, specific conductivity, conductivity, and turbidity) collected at mostly static stations throughout the Boardman/Ottaway River. The dataset is updated annually. These data are collected until the initiation and/or substantial completion of the FishPass structure. Collection of this type of data are expected to continue after FishPass construction completion but modifications to the extent and location of monitoring stations are anticipated. As a result, a new dataset will be updated in the future containing all long term hydrologic and water quality monitoring post construction. R. Data for: Soil Nutrients Increase Long-term Soil Carbon Gains Threefold on Retired Farmland

These data report soil C for almost four decades following intensive agricultural soil disturbance along an experimentally imposed gradient in nitrogen (N) added annually in combination with other macro- and micro-nutrients. Data were collected at the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (CCESR), a U.S. Long Term Ecological Research (USLTER) site located in central Minnesota, USA. Soil % C accumulated over the course of the study in unfertilized control plots leading to a gain of 6.1 Mg C ha-1 in the top 20 cm of soil. Nutrient addition increased soil % C accumulation leading to a gain of 17.8 Mg C ha-1 in fertilized plots, nearly a threefold increase over the control plots. These results demonstrate that substantial increases in soil C in successional grasslands following agricultural abandonment occurs over decadal timescales, and that C gain is increased by high supply rates of soil nutrients. In addition, soil % C continued to increase for decades under elevated nutrient supply, suggesting that short-term nutrient-addition experiments underestimate the effects of soil nutrients on soil C accumulation.

Johnstone) for several long-term vegetation monitoring plots near Wickersham Dome that were set up by Les Viereck and Joan Foote following the 1971 wildfire and 1978 experimental burns. Earlier records are available in the BNZ long-term vegetation database. This dataset documents tree seedling/sapling and shrub measurements made in 2002. Contains data on woody shrub heights measured in the same plots as trees.
