Data from: In love and war: the morphometric and phylogenetic basis of ornamentation, and the evolution of male display behavior, in the livebearer genus Poecilia

Exaggerated male traits under sexual selection are often used for both competition and courtship, raising the question of whether ornaments evolved simultaneously for both functions, or if use in one context preceded use in another. Here we apply a phylogenetic approach to study the evolution of ornamental dorsal fins in male poeciliid fish of the subgenera Mollienesia and Limia, which exhibit convergent development of an enlarged dorsal fin, and often direct erect-fin displays to male and female conspecifics. Unlike prior categorical assessments of poeciliid adornments, we measure dorsal fin exaggeration with a continuous index of ornamentation. Phylogenetic logistic and generalized least-squares regression analyses indicate that high index values are significantly associated with the use of two component postures of courtship and aggressive displays, dorsal fin erection and body curvature, but not with the presence of sexual dichromatism. Male displays initially evolved for male-male aggression in the common ancestor of Mollienesia and Limia, suggesting that this signal originated for competition, then became co-opted for courtship. These results support the armament-ornament hypothesis for evolution of exaggerated male traits, and are consistent with an evolutionary shift in the predominant mechanisms of sexual selection from intra- to intersexual.

A critique of Thompson and Ramírez-Barahona (2023) or: how I learned to stop worrying and love the fossil record

<p>A recent study published in <em>Biology Letters</em> by Thompson and Ramírez-Barahona (2023) argued that, according to analyses of diversification on two massive molecular phylogenies comprising thousands of species, there is no evidence that angiosperms (i.e., flowering plants) were affected by the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction. Here I critique these conclusions from both methodological and philosophical perspectives. I demonstrate that the methods used in their study possess statistical limitations that strongly reduce the power to detect a true mass extinction event using data similar to those analyzed by Thompson and Ramírez-Barahona (2023). Additionally, I use their study as a springboard to examine the relationship between phylogenetic and fossil evidence in diversification studies.</p>

Tropical tree growth and its response to climate anomalies is mediated by neighbourhood hierarchy and dissimilarity in carbon and water related traits.&nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>All analyses have been conducted and produced in the R environment (R version 4.1.2; R Core Team, 2021; RStudio Team, 2020). Bayesian hierarchical models have been run using the R package brms (Version 2.19.0; B&uuml;rkner, 2017). The data and R files containing the code to reproduce the results, figures and tables are described in the README file and code in more detailed is described in <em>RCode_xxx</em> files. Please note that the analyses are highly computational intensive and the scripts should be run on a high performance cluster (models and scripts running models and handeling model outputs presented here have been run with 16 cpus and with 50 - 100 GB of RAM). Packages needed are loaded at the beginning of each script. Please ensure that these and all their dependencies&nbsp;have been previously installed.
