Oxygen Flux in a Restored Seagrass Meadow on the Coast of Virginia, 2011-2012
Oxygen flux was measured seasonally using the eddy correlation technique in a restored eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) meadow in the Virginia coastal bays (USA). In 5 intensive field campaigns, we covered seasonal variation in oxygen metabolism and biomass with overlap in late summer to observe interannual variability.

Orthology guided transcriptome assembly of Italian ryegrass and meadow fescue for single nucleotide polymorphisms discovery (data set)
<p>Transcriptome sequencing was performed on ten samples (corresponding to six genotypes) of <em>Festuca pratensis</em> and ten samples (corresponding to six genotypes) of <em>Lolium multiflorum</em> and fourteen samples of<em> Lolium perenne</em> (corresponding to fourteen genotypes). Using the OGA approach, 18,952 non-redundant <em>F. pratensis</em> transcripts were assembled by combining the contigs of all six genotypes based on orthology with the <em>Brachypodium distachyon </em>proteome. Similarly, <em>19,036</em> non-redundant<em> L. multiflorum</em> transcripts were assembled and annotated. In total, 17,455 orthologous transcripts were shared between the transcriptomes of the two species. Out of these, 16,613 orthologous transcripts overlap with the previously published<em> L. perenne</em> transcriptome containing 19,279 non-redundant transcripts(fasta files). We identified SNPs, the following criteria were used to classify it as one of following three classes (1) intraspecific SNPs (INTRA), (2) interspecific SNPs in two-way comparison (INTER-2W) and (3) interspecific SNPs in three-way comparison (INTER-3W) (GFF files).</p>

Dataset from: Tolerance to aerial exposure influences distributional patterns in multi-species intertidal seagrass meadows
<p>This is the dataset for an article published in Marine Environmental Research titled, 'Tolerance to aerial exposure influences distributional patterns in multi-species intertidal seagrass meadows', in October 2023. Following is the abstract for the paper for which this was the primary data:</p><p>Multi-specific seagrass meadow assemblages dominate most tropical intertidal regions but the relative role of environmental stress in determining distribution patterns is still uncertain. Here we combine observational and experimental approaches to examine aerial exposure as a factor driving species occurrence patterns in intertidal meadows of the Andaman archipelago, where up to 6 seagrass species co-occur. In the studied meadow, patterns of exposure did not map onto distance from the coast, instead creating a patchy matrix of exposure, based on fine-scale bathymetric differences. Distributional surveys showed that seagrass species were similarly patchy, often tracking the degree of aerial exposure during low tide. While some species (<i>Halophila ovalis, Halophila minor,</i> and <i>Thalassia hemprichii</i>) frequently occurred in submerged or subtidal areas and were rarely found in completely exposed areas, other species (<i>Cymodocea rotundata</i>, <i>Halophila beccarii,</i> and <i>Halodule uninervis</i>) also occupied areas that were subject to partial or complete aerial exposure during low tide. To confirm this pattern, we used field-based transplant experiments, employing a natural gradient of tidal exposure to subject six seagrass species to different desiccation exposure times. After a month, <i>H. beccarii</i> and <i>H. uninervis</i> transplants survived in areas that sustained more than 3 h of aerial tidal exposure without significant mortality, compared with other species (<i>H. ovalis, H. minor, T. hemprichii, C. rotundata</i>) that showed dramatic shoot mortality at the same exposure regimes. For all species, 4 h represented the upper limit of exposure, in both experimental and distributional studies. However, despite their wider tolerance of exposure to air, <i>H. beccarii</i> and <i>H. uninervis</i> did not dominate the entire meadow. This could be a result either of their poor tolerance to other environmental factors or their lower competitive abilities among other mechanisms. This suggests that in tropical multi-specific meadows, strong environmental filters could override clear intertidal zonation to create patchy matrices based on species tolerances.</p>
Climate warming and temporal variation in reproduction strategies in the endangered meadow viper
<p>Here, we used more than three decades of mark-recapture data in a natural population of the endangered meadow viper (<i>Vipera ursinii ursinii</i>) to unravel the patterns of temporal variation in reproductive traits, local climatic determinants of inter-annual variation in reproduction and the potential buffering effects of life cycle on population growth rate. We found significant inter-annual variation in annual body growth, gestation length, post-parturition body condition, clutch success and offspring traits at birth, but little temporal effects in reproductive effort. Temperature during gestation was the most influential local climatic determinant by shortening gestation length, and increasing clutch success and post-parturition body condition. Neither air humidity nor insolation was found to influence reproduction.</p>
Dataset for "Structural complexity and benthic metabolism: resolving the links between carbon cycling and biodiversity in restored seagrass meadows"
<p>This dataset accompanies the article "Structural complexity and benthic metabolism: resolving the links between carbon cycling and biodiversity in restored seagrass meadows" accepted for publication in Biogeosciences (https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-2023-173). The dataset includes benthic fluxes and biodiversity data in from bare sediments, restored <em>Zostera marina</em> and a natural <em>Z. marina</em> meadow collected in Gåsö, Sweden (58.2325, 11.3984) between July 05 - July 20, 2022. </p>

Earlier spring snowmelt drives arrowleaf balsamroot phenology in montane meadows
<p>Climate change is causing global shifts in phenology, altering when and how species respond to environmental cues such as temperature and the timing of snowmelt. These shifts may result in phenological mismatches among interacting species, creating cascading effects on community and ecosystem dynamics. Using passive warming structures and snow removal, we examined how experimentally increased temperatures, earlier spring snowmelt, and the poorly understood interaction between warming and earlier spring snowmelt affected flower onset, flowering duration, and maximum floral display of the spring flowering montane species, Arrowleaf Balsamroot (<em>Balsamorhiza sagittata</em>), over a seven-year period. Additionally, potential cumulative effects of treatments were evaluated over the study duration. The combination of heating with snow removal led to earlier flower onset, extended flowering duration, and increased maximum floral display. While there was year-to-year variation in floral phenology, the effect of heating with snow removal on earlier onset and maximum floral display strengthened over time. This suggests that short-term studies likely underestimate the potential for climate change to influence phenological plant traits. Overall, this research indicates that<em> Balsamorhiza sagittata</em>'s flowering onset responded more strongly to snow removal than to heating, but the combination of heating with snow removal allowed plants to bloom earlier, longer, and more profusely, providing more pollinator resources in spring. If warming and early snowmelt cause similar responses in other plant species besides<em> Balsamorhiza sagittata</em>, these patterns could mitigate phenological mismatches with pollinators by providing a wider window of time for interaction and resiliency in the face of change. This example demonstrates that a detailed understanding of how spring-flowering plants respond to specific aspects of predicted climatic scenarios will improve our understanding of the effects of climate change on native plant-pollinator interactions in montane ecosystems. Studies like this help elucidate long-term physiological effects of climate-induced stressors on plant phenology in long-lived forbs.</p>
Dietary metabarcoding datasets for the southern meadow jumping mouse (Zapus luteus luteus)
<p>The southern meadow jumping mouse (<em>Zapus luteus luteus</em>) is Endangered in the US due to loss of riparian habitat and knowledge of diet can focus conservation efforts. Context and life stages of diet have been documented for other species of Zapus (seeds, insect larvae, and hypogeous fungi), possibly shifting toward greater diversity in seed predations prior to hibernation. Yet, challenges in field observation, thorough digestion, and lack of scalability have hindered a thorough survey of dietary taxonomies. We collected the feces of 165 <em>Z. l. luteus</em> from across the geographic range. Emphasizing granivorous diet, we used DNA metabarcoding to resolve its dietary taxonomies. With negligible impact of field contamination, we found a varied diet most frequently of graminoids, forbs, and lepidoptera. Detecting up to nine dietary taxa in individuals, <em>Z. l. luteus</em> consumed more and different combinations of plant taxa as they approached the known hibernation window. Our work emphasizes the importance of forbs and graminoids as the foundation of the diet, providing primary sustenance and habitat for insect prey. The breadth of different diet items they consume suggests plasticity in resource use, potentially accommodating diverse patterns of seed production throughout their active period. We also hypothesize that a peak in seed availability in the late season could play a role in their accumulation of pre-hibernation fat stores.</p>
