The thermal niche and phylogenetic assembly of evergreen tree metacommunities in a mid-to-upper tropical montane zone

<p>Frost and freezing temperatures have posed an obstacle to tropical woody evergreen plants over evolutionary timescales. Thus, along tropical elevation gradients, frost may influence woody plant community structure by filtering out lowland tropical clades, and allowing extra-tropical lineages to establish at higher elevations.</p> <p>Here we assess the extent to which frost influences the taxonomic and phylogenetic structure of naturally-patchy evergreen forests (locally known as <em>shola</em>) along a mid-upper montane elevation gradient in the Western Ghats, India. Specifically, we examine the role of large-scale macroclimate and factors affecting local microclimates, including <em>shola</em> patch size and distance from <em>shola</em> edge, in driving <em>shola </em>metacommunity structure. We find that the <em>shola </em>metacommunity shows phylogenetic overdispersion with elevation, with greater representation of extra-tropical lineages above 2000m, and marked turnover in taxonomic composition of <em>shola </em>woody communities near the frost-affected forest edge above 2000m, from those below 2000m. Both minimum winter temperature and patch size were equally important in determining metacommunity structure, with plots inside very large <em>sholas </em>dominated by older tropical lineages, with many endemics. Phylogenetic overdispersion in the upper montane <em>shola </em>metacommunity thus resulted from tropical lineages persisting in the interiors of large closed frost-free <em>sholas</em>, where their regeneration niche has been preserved over time.</p>

Scaling of biological rates with body size as a backbone in the assembly of metacommunity biodiversity

<p><span>The dispersal-body mass association has been highlighted as a main determinant of biodiversity patterns in metacommunities. However, less attention has been devoted to other well recognized determinants of metacommunity diversity: the scaling in density and regional richness with body size. Among active dispersers, the increase in movement with body size may enhance local richness and decrease beta diversity. Nevertheless, the reduction of population size and regional richness with body mass may determine a negative diversity-body size association. Consequently, metacommunity assembly probably emerges from a balance between the effect of these scalings. We formalize this hypothesis relating the exponents of size-scaling rules with simulated trends in alpha, beta, and gamma diversity with body size. Our results highlight that the diversity-body size relationship in metacommunities may be driven by the combined effect of different scaling rules. Given their ubiquity in most terrestrial and aquatic biotas, these scaling rules may represent the basic determinants—backbone—of biodiversity, over which other mechanisms operate determining metacommunity assembly. Further studies are needed, aimed at explaining biodiversity patterns from functional relationships between biological rates and body size, as well as their association with environmental conditions and species interactions.</span></p>

Isolation drives species gains and losses of insect metacommunities over time in a mountaintop forest archipelago

<p><strong>Aim: </strong>We evaluated the effects of forest island size, isolation, and area in the landscape driving temporal changes of insect biodiversity in a mountaintop forest archipelago. We tested the following hypotheses: (i) changes in insect species composition is higher and dominated by species gains through time in smaller but less isolated forest islands; (ii) larger amounts of forest in the landscape result in higher gains of more vagile species over time, regardless of their size and isolation; (iii) heterogenization processes will prevail in less vagile groups, while homogenization processes will dominate in highly vagile groups due to differences in dispersal capability.</p> <p><strong>Location:</strong> Espinhaço Range Biosphere Reserve, Brazil.</p> <p><strong>Taxon:</strong> Insects.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We used ants, dung beetles, bees, wasps, and butterflies as study models to represent a gradient of low-to-high dispersal capability. We evaluated the colonization- and extirpation-resultant components of temporal β-diversity using area- and isolation-related variables as predictors.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We found distinct colonization- and extirpation-resultant homogenization and heterogenization processes acting according to each insect group, likely due to different dispersal capabilities. Ants were dominated by species losses, with widespread and rare species being lost. Butterflies gained species, represented mainly by widespread species, leading to an increased colonization-resultant homogenization. Distance to neighboring forest islands was the underlying predictor affecting the temporal β-diversity of insect groups and on species gains and losses but differed according to the survey period. Effects of the forest amount in the landscape increased the temporal β-diversity of bees and butterflies but decreased that of ants, dung beetles, and wasps.</p> <p><strong>Main Conclusions:</strong> We recommend conserving the forest amount in the landscape and keeping forest connectivity among forest islands since the temporal dynamics of local colonization and extirpation can depend on the organisms' dispersal capability. Fragmentation and habitat loss-related hypotheses will benefit from incorporating colonization-extirpation processes into their predictions.</p>
