Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Mirror Lake Thermal Profiles 1981 - 2011

Numerous studies have been conducted on Mirror Lake since the mid-1960s, including extensive physical, chemical, biological, and paleoecological research (Likens 1985). This data set includes thermal profiles consisting of temperatures measured at discrete depths. Measurements were made using a hand-held instrument from a boat at an anchored buoy station located at the deepest part (11 m at full pool) of Mirror Lake during the open water (ice-free) season. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Data from: Patterns of biodiverse, understudied groups do not mirror those of the surrogate groups that set conservation priorities: a case study from the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain of eastern North America

We conducted biodiversity inventories of lichens, woody plants, and sedges at 32 sites on the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain of eastern North America between November 2012 and June 2015. Each site comprised a single, uniform habitat, and sites were classified as: Coastal Plain Floodplain forest, Coastal Plain Flatwood swamp, Coastal Plain Oak-Pine forest, Maritime forest, Mixed Mesic Hardwood forest, or Tidal forest. We compared alpha diversity and community assemblages of each organismal group across the sites, and compared selected minimal reserve sets in order to visualize biodiversity patterns and assess whether specific components of vascular plants (sedges and woody plants) serve as an effective surrogate for lichens. Woody plants provide a direct substrate for lichen growth, but there was no significant correlation between the alpha diversity of these groups. For conserving maximal species richness among the studied groups, lichens outperformed the sedges and woody plants as the better surrogate group for building minimum reserve sets, even though vascular plants are more commonly used as a surrogate. Likewise, sedge alpha diversity was not correlated with lichens, or with woody plants. Although no group was an effective indicator for high alpha diversity sites of other organisms, a significant correlation between the community assemblages of lichens and woody plants suggests that protecting varied types of plant communities might serve as a workable surrogate for protecting lichens. The lack of congruence between species richness patterns across organismal groups suggests that the mechanisms that shape patterns of diversity are not identical, and that identifying and incorporating specific biodiversity indicators for understudied groups into conservation policy is necessary to ensure their protection.

Of Mojave milkweed and mirrors: The population genomic structure of a species impacted by solar energy development

<p>A rapid renewable energy transition has facilitated the development of large, ground‐mounted solar energy facilities worldwide. Deserts, and other sensitive aridland ecosystems, are the second most common land‐cover type for solar energy development globally. Thus, it is necessary to understand existing diversity within environmentally sensitive desert plant populations to understand spatiotemporal effects of solar energy siting and design. Overall, few population genomic studies of desert plants exist, and much of their biology is unknown. To help fill this knowledge gap, we sampled Mojave milkweed (<em>Asclepias</em> <em>nyctaginifolia</em>) in and around the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Station (ISEGS) in the Mojave Desert of California to understand the species' population structure, standing genetic variation, and how that intersects with solar development. We performed Restriction‐site Associated Sequencing (RADseq) and discovered 9942 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Using these data, we found clear population structure over small spatial scales, suggesting each site sampled comprised a genetically distinct population of Mojave milkweed. While mowing, in lieu of blading, the vegetation across the solar energy facility's footprint prevented the immediate loss of the ISEGS Mojave milkweed population, we show that the effects of land‐cover change, especially those impacting desert washes, may impact long‐term genetic diversity and persistence. Potential implications of this include a risk of overall loss of genetic diversity, or even hastened extirpation. These findings highlight the need to consider the genetic diversity of impacted species when predicting the impact and necessary conservation measures of large‐scale land‐cover changes on species with small population sizes.</p>

Data from: Repeated divergence in opsin genes expression mirrors photic habitat changes in rapidly evolving crater lake cichlid fishes

<div> <div> <div class="msocomtxt"> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Selection pressures differ along environmental gradients and organisms' phenotypes. Traits tightly linked to fitness (e.g., the visual system) are expected to closely track environmental variation along gradients. Within such gradients, adaptation to local conditions might be due to heritable and non-heritable, environmentally induced variation. Disentangling these sources of phenotypic variation requires studying, in nature and the laboratory, closely related populations experiencing different environments. The Nicaraguan great and crater lakes show an environmental gradient in photic conditions extending from clear crater lakes to very turbid great lakes. From two old, turbid great lakes, Midas cichlid fish (<em>Amphilophus </em>cf.<em> citrinellus</em>) independently colonized seven isolated crater lakes of varying light conditions, resulting in a small adaptive radiation. We estimated the variation in visual sensitivities along this photic gradient by measuring differential cone opsin gene expression among populations from different lakes. The visual sensitivities observed in all seven derived crater lake populations have not changed randomly but shifted predictably in direction and magnitude, repeatedly mirroring changes in photic conditions. Intrapopulation phenotypic variation decreases as environments become spectrally narrower suggesting different selective landscapes within the gradient. Comparing wild-caught and lab-reared fish revealed that 48% of this phenotypic variation is genetically determined and evolved rapidly. Our results demonstrate deterministic, rapid phenotypic evolution that fine-tunes visual sensitivity to fine-scale environmental variation.</span></p> <p class="MsoCommentText"><span> </span></p> </div> </div> </div>

Neuroanatomical shifts mirror patterns of ecological divergence in three diverse clades of mimetic butterflies

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Microhabitat partitioning in heterogenous environments can support more diverse communities but may expose partitioned species to distinct perceptual challenges. Divergence across microhabitats could therefore lead to local adaptation to contrasting sensory conditions across small spatial scales, but this aspect of community structuring is rarely explored. Diverse communities of ithomiine butterflies provide an example where closely related species partition tropical forests, where shifts in mimetic colouration are tightly associated with shifts in habitat preference. </span><span>We test the hypothesis </span><span>that these mimetic and ecological shifts are associated with distinct patterns of sensory neural investment by comparing brain structure across 164 individuals of 16 species from three ithomiine clades. We find distinct brain morphologies between Oleriina<em> </em>and <em>Hypothyris</em>, which are mimetically homogenous and occupy a single microhabitat. Oleriina, which occur in low-light micro-habitats, invests less in visual brain regions than <em>Hypothyris</em>, with one notable exception, <em>Hyposcada anchiala, </em>the only Oleriina<em> </em>sampled to have converged on mimicry rings found in <em>Hypothyris</em>. We also find that <em>Napeogenes</em>, which has diversified into a range of mimicry rings, shows intermediate patterns of sensory investment. We identify flight height as a critical factor shaping neuroanatomical diversity, with species that fly higher in the canopy investing more in visual structures. Our work suggests that the sensory ecology of species may be impacted by, and interact with, the ways in which communities of closely related organisms are adaptively assembled.</span></p>
