SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Experimental Reef Survey - Giant Kelp Outplant Size-Specific Survivorship
These data describe the size-specific survivorship of laboratory-reared embryonic giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, outplanted at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA). In summer 2000 divers deployed an average of 56 outplant units containing embryonic kelp to 14 modules of Wheeler North Reef. Size specific survivorship was measured by recording the number and size of outplanted kelp on surviving outplant units three and eleven months after deployment. Measurements of size were categorical and included small single blades (recruits), multi-bladed plants less than 1m tall, and multi-frond plants equal or greater than 1 m tall.

These data describe annual estimates of the somatic and gonadal tissue production in five species of reef fishes at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA) and two natural reference reefs (San Mateo Kelp in Orange County, CA and Barn Kelp in San Diego County, CA). Data were collected from 2009 – 2023 as part of a comprehensive mitigation program aimed at evaluating the ability of Wheeler North Reef to compensate for losses of kelp forest habitat and associated biota caused by the operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).
UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Survey - Fish Abundance
These data describe annual estimates of the density of fish in main channel and tidal creek habitats collected as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration mitigation monitoring program designed to evaluate compliance of the restoration project with conditions of the SONGS permit. Monitoring began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Wetlands and Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA. Beginning in 2024, Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County replaced Tijuana Estuary. The abundance of fish is determined using beach seine and enclosure trap sampling at six main channel and six tidal creek locations at each wetland. Both seine and enclosure trap sampling consist of several hauls through an enclosed volume of water. Sampling is conducted annually in early fall.

Bird feeding activity was estimated for twenty plots in each wetland having at least one targeted shorebird species present on the ground. Beginning in 2024, Tijuana Estuary was replaced with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County, CA.

Measurements of water depth, temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were recorded daily in fifteen minute intervals at two sampling stations (primary and backup) at the San Dieguito Wetland, Carpinteria Salt Marsh, and Mugu Lagoon, and one sampling station (primary) at the Tijuana Estuary (2012-2023) and Los Penasquitos Lagoon (2024-present).

UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Process Study - Irrigation, Decompaction, Amendment, Planting and Seeding Experiment Vegetation Cover
These data describe estimates of the percent cover of marsh plants in experimental plots designed to evaluate the effectiveness of various soil treatments on increasing vegetation cover at the San Dieguito Wetlands (Del Mar, California). Plots established between 1.61 – 2.1 m MLLW were manipulated to test the effects of irrigation, decompaction, soil amendments, and planting versus seeding, whereas plots between 1.6 – 1.7 m MLLW tested the effects of planting versus seeding alone. Data collection was conducted from 2020 to 2022. During each survey, species of marsh plants were identified and recorded under 98 uniformly spaced points within 4.5 m2 quadrats in each plot.

Plots established between 1.61 – 2.1 m MLLW were manipulated to test the effects of irrigation, decompaction, soil amendments, and planting versus seeding, whereas plots between 1.6 – 1.7 m MLLW tested the effects of planting versus seeding alone. Data collection was conducted from 2020 to 2022. During each survey, the length of the longest axis and maximum perpendicular width of each planted individual was measured.
UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Process Study – Soil Properties
These data describe physical and chemical properties of soil samples collected as part of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Mitigation Monitoring Program. Data collection began in 2019 at the San Dieguito Wetland in San Diego County, CA. Additional locations at Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh is Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA were added in 2021. Sampling occurred sporadically at various locations in each wetland. All soil samples were characterized for organic matter content and particle size. Additional properties were characterized for select soil samples.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Conspecific aggregation mitigation of OA on calcification of the coral Pocillopora verrucosa, JEXBIO 2017
The study was conducted in April 2015 in Moorea, French Polynesia, using colonies of Pocillopora verrucosa (~ 4 cm in planar diameter) collected from the outer reef of the north shore at 10–12 m depth. Corals were collected from multiple sites separated by 100-200 m on the outer reef to maximize the likelihood that the selected coral colonies were genetically unique, and transferred directly to an acclimation tank. The experiment used a sequential design, in which corals first were incubated under 130 ambient or elevated pCO2 in flow-through tanks, and then were incubated in a recirculating flume under the same pCO2 crossed with a contrast of two colony densities (Fig. S1). Two response variables were measured in the light (calcification and net photosynthesis at a single irradiance), two response variables were measured in the dark (aerobic respiration and calcification), and two response variables were calculated from these values (gross 135 photosynthesis, and calcification integrated over 24 h). Aerobic respiration was measured as oxygen uptake, and net photosynthesis was measured as the flux of oxygen at a constant irradiance, and in both cases, oxygen uptake was given a negative notation and oxygen evolution a positive notation; gross photosynthesis was obtained by subtracting respiration from net photosynthesis. Daily calcification was calculated by integrating calcification in the 140 light over 12 h, calcification in the dark over 12 h, and summing the two values assuming each day consisted of 12 h of light at a constant intensity. The six response variables were measured for aggregates of a fixed number (n = 12) of similar-sized colonies placed in the flume in either high or low density arrays. With this design, it was not possible to measure the physiology of individual colonies in each aggregate, and therefore our results describe the 145 performance corals averaged across each aggregate. Simulated Solar Spectra for Testing Stellar Activity Mitigation Strategies
<p>Recent and upcoming stabilized spectrographs are pushing the frontier for Doppler spectroscopy to detect and characterize low-mass planets. Specifications for these instruments are so impressive that intrinsic stellar variability is expected to limit their Doppler precision for most target stars (Fischer et al. 2016). In order to realize their full potential, astronomers must develop new strategies for distinguishing true Doppler shifts from intrinsic stellar variability. Stellar variability due to starspots, faculae, and other rotationally-linked variability is particularly concerning, as the stellar rotation period is often included in the range of potential planet orbital periods. In order to robustly detect and accurately characterize low-mass planets via Doppler planet surveys, the exoplanet community must develop statistical models capable of jointly modeling planetary perturbations and intrinsic stellar variability. Towards this effort, we present simulations of extremely high-resolution solar-like spectra created with SOAP 2.0(Dumusque et al. 2014) that includes multiple evolving starspots to aid in developing and testing future statistical methods.</p>
