Data from: Translocation experiment of taiga bean geese Anser fabalis provides evidence for oblique social learning of moult migration

<p>While there is ample evidence supporting genetic control of migratory behaviour in short-lived passerines, long-lived social species have been assumed to rely solely on cultural inheritance of migratory routes. Evidence from experimental studies supporting this idea is scarce. We tested whether the moult migration in taiga bean geese <em>Anser fabalis </em>has an inherited component or whether the birds need oblique social learning (where knowledge on migration is transferred from any experienced individual to any naïve individual conspecific) to carry out this journey. In many waterfowl species, non-breeders and failed breeders migrate to remote places for wing moult while successful breeders stay at the breeding grounds and moult with their chicks. We translocated one-year-old taiga bean geese before their first moult migration to sites outside of the breeding range to examine whether they display innate moult migration behaviour without experienced conspecifics or not. The birds were equipped with GPS-transmitters and released in randomly assigned groups of two. Wild control one-year-old birds were released immediately after capture with other non-breeding geese, while a procedural control group consisting of older birds was held in captivity until released at the same time with the translocated one-year-old birds but in the place where they were captured. Most translocated birds found conspecifics and either joined locally moulting breeders or followed experienced birds to moulting sites in Russia. Two of the translocated birds did not find other bean geese and settled to moult together in SW Finland. The wild control birds moult-migrated as expected, while only one of the procedural control birds moult-migrated to Russia and the remaining three stayed with locally moulting breeders in Finland. Our results support the idea that moult migration in geese is culturally inherited, highlighting the importance of the non-relative, experienced adult individuals have in maintaining population-specific behaviours.</p>

Local timing of rainfall predicts the timing of moult within a single locality and the progress of moult among localities that vary in the onset of the wet season in a year-round breeding tropical songbird

<p>Rainfall seasonality is likely an important cue for timing key annual cycle events like moult in birds living in seasonally arid environments, but its precise effect is difficult to establish because seasonal rainfall may affect other covarying annual events such as breeding in the same way. In central Nigeria, however, Common Bulbuls <em>Pycnonotus barbatus</em> moult in the wet season but only show weak breeding seasonality. This suggests that moult is more sensitive to rainfall than breeding, but a similar outcome is possible if moult is simply periodic. We tested the relationship between rainfall and moult in Common Bulbuls at a single location over 18 years: on average moult started 5th May (± 41 days: 25th March–15th June), being on average later than the onset of the rains which is usually mid-April. The likelihood of finding a moulting Common bulbul was best predicted by rainfall 9–15 weeks before moult was scored. We then tested the generality of this across populations: the progress of moult should, therefore, correlate with the average timing of the wet season along a spatial environmental gradient where the rains start at different times each year south-to-north of Nigeria. To test this, we modelled moult progress just before the rains across 15 localities 6°–13° N as a function of the onset of the wet season among localities. As predicted, moult progressed further in localities with earlier wet seasons, confirming that the onset of moult is timed to the onset of the wet season in each locality despite weak breeding seasonality in the Common Bulbul. This strategy may evolve to maintain optimal annual cycle routine in seasonal environments where breeding is prone to unpredictable local perturbations like nest predation. It may, however, be less obvious in temperate systems where all annual cycle stages are seasonally constrained, but it may help with explaining the high frequency of breeding–moult overlaps in tropical birds.</p>

Data from: Feather corticosterone reveals effect of moulting conditions in the autumn on subsequent reproductive output and survival in an Arctic migratory bird

For birds, unpredictable environments during the energetically stressful times of moulting and breeding are expected to have negative fitness effects. Detecting those effects however, might be difficult if individuals modulate their physiology and/or behaviours in ways to minimize short-term fitness costs. Corticosterone in feathers (CORTf) is thought to provide information on total baseline and stress-induced CORT levels at moulting and is an integrated measure of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal activity during the time feathers are grown. We predicted that CORTf levels in northern common eider females would relate to subsequent body condition, reproductive success and survival, in a population of eiders nesting in the eastern Canadian Arctic during a capricious period marked by annual avian cholera outbreaks. We collected CORTf data from feathers grown during previous moult in autumn and data on phenology of subsequent reproduction and survival for 242 eider females over 5 years. Using path analyses, we detected a direct relationship between CORTf and arrival date and body condition the following year. CORTf also had negative indirect relationships with both eider reproductive success and survival of eiders during an avian cholera outbreak. This indirect effect was dramatic with a reduction of approximately 30% in subsequent survival of eiders during an avian cholera outbreak when mean CORTf increased by 1 standard deviation. This study highlights the importance of events or processes occurring during moult on subsequent expression of life-history traits and relation to individual fitness, and shows that information from non-destructive sampling of individuals can track carry-over effects across seasons.

Data from: Do respiratory limitations affect metabolism of insect larvae before moulting: an empirical test at the individual level

Recent data suggest that oxygen limitation may induce moulting in larval insects. This oxygen dependent induction of moulting (ODIM) hypothesis stems from the fact that the tracheal respiratory system of insects grows primarily at moults, whereas tissue mass increases massively between moults. This may result in a mismatch between oxygen supply and demand at the end of each larval instar because oxygen demand of growing tissues exceeds the relatively fixed supply capacity of the respiratory system. The ODIM hypothesis predicts that, within larval instars, respiration and metabolic rates of an individual larva first increase with increasing body mass but eventually level off once the supply capacity of the tracheal system starts to constrain metabolism. Here, we provide the first individual-level test of this key prediction of the ODIM hypothesis. We use a novel methodology where we repeatedly measure respiration and metabolic rates throughout the penultimate- and final-instar larvae in the butterfly Pieris napi. In the penultimate instar, respiration and metabolic rates gradually decelerated along with growth, supporting the ODIM hypothesis. However, respiration and metabolic rates increased linearly during growth in the final instar, contradicting the prediction. Moreover, our data suggest considerable variation among individuals in the association between respiration rate and mass in the final instar. Overall, the results provide partial support for the ODIM hypothesis and suggest that oxygen limitation may emerge gradually within a larval instar. The results also suggest that there may be different moult induction mechanisms in larva-to-larva moults compared to the final metamorphic moult.
