Data from: Microgeography, not just latitude, drives climate overlap on mountains from tropical to polar ecosystems

<p class="CxSpFirst"><span>An extension of the climate variability hypothesis is that relatively stable climate, such as that of the tropics, induces distinct thermal bands across elevation that render dispersal over tropical mountains difficult compared to temperate mountains. Yet, ecosystems are not thermally static in space-time, especially at small scales, which might render some mountains greater thermal isolators than others. Here, we provide an extensive investigation of temperature drivers from fine to coarse scales, and demonstrate that the degree of overlap in temperatures at high and low elevations on mountains is driven by more than just absolute mountain height and latitude. We compiled a database of 29 mountains spanning 6 continents to characterize "thermal overlap" by vertically stratified microhabitats, biomes, and owing to seasonal changes in foliage, demonstrating via mixed-effects modeling that micro- and mesogeography more strongly influence thermal overlap than macrogeography. Impressively, an increase of one meter of vertical microhabitat height generates an increase in overlap equivalent to a 5.26° change in latitude. In addition, forested mountains have reduced overlap – 149% lower – relative to non-forested mountains. We provide evidence in support of a climate hypothesis that emphasizes microgeography as a determinant of dispersal, demographics, and behavior, thereby refining classical theory of macroclimate variability as a prominent driver of biogeography.</span></p> <p class="CxSpMiddle"> </p>

Data from: Potential of typical highland and mountain forests in the Czech Republic for climate-smart forestry: ecosystem-scale drought responses

<p>Climate-smart forestry (CSF) consists of an extensive framework of actions directed to mitigating and adapting to global climate change impacts on the resilience and productivity of forest ecosystems. The study connected to this data set investigates the impact of the pan-European 2018 drought on carbon exchange dynamics in typical highland and mountain forests in the Czech Republic, including two coniferous (Norway spruce at Bílý Kříž and Rajec) and one deciduous (European beech at Štítná) stand. Our results show annual net ecosystem CO<sub>2</sub> uptake at Rajec to be reduced by 50% during the drought year in comparison to a reference year with normal climatic conditions. Bílý Kříž is less affected by drought, as the local microclimate ensures sufficient water supply. The European beech forest at Štítná is most resilient against drought and its negative impacts: there we detect no differences in carbon exchange dynamics between the drought year and the reference year. Our results are demonstrated on the basis of monthly and annual carbon exchange values and corresponding environmental variables. This data set consists of two files, one containing daily average (sum) data, the second one containing 30 minute average data. The 30 minute average data were the basis of all daily, monthly and annual average (sum) data shown in the study connected to this data set.</p>

Respondents were asked about: a) relation with the rural area and human-nature connectedness; b) perception toward rural abandonment and drivers of change; c) specific activities that in the municipality are carried out to face rural abandonment and how those activities are connected and promote different human well-being components. A final section of the survey compiled socio-demographic information to allow the characterization of the respondents.
