Data from: An empirical and mechanistic explanation of abundance-occupancy relationships for a critically endangered nomadic migrant

The positive abundance-occupancy relationship (AOR) is a pervasive pattern in macroecology. Similarly, the association between occupancy (or probability of occurrence) and abundance is also usually assumed to be positive and in most cases constant. Examples of AORs for nomadic species with variable distributions are extremely rare. Here we examined temporal and spatial trends in the AOR over seven years for a critically endangered nomadic migrant which relies on dynamic pulses in food availability to breed. We predicted a negative temporal relationship, where local mean abundances increase when the number of occupied sites decreases, and a positive relationship between local abundances and the probability of occurrence. We also predicted that these patterns are largely attributable to spatiotemporal variation in food abundance. The temporal AOR was significantly negative and annual food availability was significantly positively correlated with the number of occupied sites, but negatively correlated with abundance. Thus, as food availability decreased, local densities of birds increased, and vice-versa. The abundance - probability of occurrence relationship was positive and non-linear, but varied between years due to differing degrees of spatial aggregation caused by changing food availability. Importantly, high abundance (or occupancy) did not necessarily equate to high quality habitat and may be indicative of resource bottlenecks or exposure to other processes affecting vital rates. Our results provide a rare empirical example that highlights the complexity of AORs for species that target aggregated food resources in dynamic environments.

Rural Route Nomad Photo and Video Collection Dataset

<p>This dataset encompasses the metadata drawn from preserving and visualizing the Rural Route Nomad Photo and Video Collection. The collection consists of 14,058 born-digital objects shot on over a dozen digital cameras in over 30 countries, on seven continents from the end of 2008 through 2009. Metadata was generated using ExifTool, along with manual means, utilizing OpenRefine and Excel to parse and clean.</p> <p>The dataset was a result of an overriding project to preserve the digital content of the Rural Route Nomad Collection, and then visualize photographic specs and geographic details with charts, graphs and maps in Tableau. FAIRmat Tutorial 6: Experimental data management in NOMAD

<p>Experiments are a key ingredient of materials science. Instruments are built, data are collected on a routine basis in every laboratory in universities, research institutes, and industrial sites, but often data is only used for answering a specific question in the hands of a local investigator. In the past, the full potential of data has not been explored, because the heterogeneity of research impeded meaningful comparisons beyond dedicated project teams. For the scientific community, this means that the same experiment has to be performed repeatedly, and there is no way to form a big data infrastructure enabling modern interoperable solutions, like artificial intelligence assisted research.</p> <p>FAIRmat, as one of the flagship projects of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfdi.de/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">German National Research Data Infrastructure</a>, is working on providing experimental data management solutions from the lab scale to the national or international level. We are presenting a hands-on tutorial on how we support the data lifecycle from planning and running an experiment to collecting and annotating data according to international community standards for searchability, and reuse. For this purpose, we bring a very simple experiment of a temperature dependent I-V measurement in as an example and let every participant follow us and connect to our central data management services, to view, explore and work with the datasets collected on-the-fly.</p> <p><strong>Disclaimer:</strong> NOMAD is being continuously developed based on input and feedback from the scientific community.
