Genome Database: Turnover of strain-level diversity modulates functional traits in the honeybee gut microbiome between nurses and foragers

<p>This repository contains the dataset used in the publication "Turnover of strain-level diversity modulates functional traits in the honeybee gut microbiome between nurses and foragers," which is currently under revision. A pre-print can be found <a href="https://doi.org/10.1101/2022.12.29.522137">here</a>. The study was conducted in the faculty of nursing at Najran University, King Dome of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Data from: Warming had contrasting effects on the importance of facilitative interactions with a cushion nurse species on native and non-native species in the high-Andes of central Chile

<p>Alpine habitats are regarded as particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. On one hand, global warming is supposed to contributes to alpine environments becoming less stressful. On the other hand, altered snowpack due to warmer temperatures can intensify the stress in these habitats. The presence of non-native plants on some of these habitats is due to the facilitative effects exerted by native nurse plants, becoming an additional threat. According to the stress gradient hypothesis the importance of facilitative interactions with nurse species is expected to diminish as environmental harshness decreases due to climate change, yet remains important if climate change heightens the stress in alpine habitats. However, the responses also depend on climate change's impact on the nurse species. We conducted an experimental warming experiment in the Andes of the central Chile to assess the effects of warmer temperatures on the growth, reproduction and photochemical efficiency of the cushion nurse plant Azorella madreporica. Further we performed a cushion removal experiment involving three native species (Gamocarpha ventosa, Nocaccea magellanica and Rytidosperma pictum) and two non-native species (Cerastium arvense and Taraxacum officinale) to assess whether facilitative interactions changed with warming. We expected that under warmer conditions facilitation continued be important for the native species but decreased for the non-natives as the latter are abundant at warmer low elevations. We found that warmer conditions increased the photochemical efficiency and growth of the nurse cushions. Removal of cushions resulted in high mortality rates for all species. However, under warmer conditions, native species exhibited lower survival rates, whereas non-natives showed no significant changes compared to control groups. In summary, warmer temperatures were beneficial for the nurses maintaining the importance of facilitative interactions for native species, but not for the non-natives.</p>

Knowledge of Primary Health Care Nurses at Selected Public Institutions Regarding Prescription of Antihypertensive Drugs

<p>Hypertension has been among the most studied topics of the previous century and has been one of the most significant comorbidities contributing to the development of stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and renal failure. In the mist of that, there is limited data on nurses&rsquo; knowledge regarding prescription of antihypertensive drugs in Lesotho. The aim of this study was to assess primary health care nurses&rsquo; knowledge regarding prescription of antihypertensive drugs. Quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study of primary health care nurses recruited by purposive sampling was conducted. An electronic questionnaire was used to collect data and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Most participants were females and had attained diploma in general nursing and midwifery. A proportion of 26% fully knew the steps to be followed for diagnosing hypertension and only 23% felt highly confident to initiate patients on antihypertensive drugs. Moreover, knowledge on mechanism of action of antihypertensive drugs was poor and less than half only knew antihypertensive drug of choice when there is comorbidity. The study identified that nurses have knowledge deficit regarding prescription of antihypertensive drugs. There is a need for interventions to improve nurses&rsquo; knowledge so as to curb hypertension burden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Compassion fatigue is a complex phenomenon, increasingly studied by health services. In addition to the analysis of the phenomenon, studies also consider the factors that influence the satisfaction deriving from nursing work, characterized by the compassion inherent in the relationship with the patient, in addition to the associated fatigue and the consequent risk of Burnout. . The aim of this study, conducted at the IOV - Veneto Oncology Institute in Padua, is to describe Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction in nurses working in oncology, where the work requires a strong degree of sensitivity. An exploratory cross-sectional survey was conducted on a convenience sample of nurses from homogeneous medical and surgical areas who work with cancer patients. A validated Italian version of the Professional Quality of Life Scale: Compassion Satisfaction and Fatigue was applied. Pretest and posttest data for nurses' empathy and problem solving

<p><span>Service design is an innovative tool to improve the quality of patient experience and, therefore, it is necessary to have nurses who can implement service design. </span><span>The aim of this study was to implement a training program for patient experience-based nursing service design (PEN-SD) and examine the effects of the program on clinical nurses' compassion and problem-solving ability</span><span>.</span> <span>This study employed mixed methods: a one-group, pretest-posttest design was used as the quantitative approach and structured interviews as the qualitative approach. Twenty-one</span><span> nurses</span><span> were recruited</span><span> from </span><span>a</span><span> university hospital in Korea. A PEN-SD training program was conducted from September 1 to October 6, 2018</span><span>.</span> <span>After the training program, the participants' compassion significantly improved (<em>p</em> = .025) but there was no significant difference in terms of their problem-solving ability </span><span>(<em>p</em> = .313). </span><span>In the structured interviews, the participants' most common response (<em>n</em> = 17) was that they were able to consider problems from the patient's perspective. They also reported identifying solutions to problems through careful observation (<em>n</em> = 5)</span><span>. </span><span>This research is an innovative attempt to introduce a service design in the nursing field. </span><span>The PEN-SD training program was effective in improving compassion among nurses as a service development method to provide the best nursing services reflecting patients' experiences.</span></p>

Teachers' knowledge of soft skills and flipped classrooms: nursing and health technologies

<p><strong><span>Background</span></strong><span>: Soft skills and flipped classrooms are important in the fields of education, nursing, and health techniques. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Aim</span></strong><span>: This study determined nursing teachers&rsquo; knowledge of soft skills and flipped classrooms.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Design</span></strong><span>: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study with an analytical focus involving 100 teachers.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Settings</span></strong><span>: The study was conducted at </span><span>a higher institute of nursing professions and health techniques&mdash;ISPITS at Agadir and its annex in Tiznit.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Participants</span></strong><span>:</span><span> One hundred permanent and part-time teachers (with an equal distribution of male and female teachers) at ISPITS in Agadir and its annex in Tiznit participated in the survey.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong><span> A five-part</span><span> questionnaire was used to collect data. The independent variable was the use of a flipped classroom and the dependent variable was the development of soft skills. SPSS version 25 software was used to process the data. A Chi-square test, Ficher&rsquo;s test, a binary logistic regression test, and a multivariate logistic regression model were employed for data analysis.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span>: In total, 80% of the participants had knowledge of soft skills, and 75% knew about flipped classrooms. The most important soft skills were considered to be communication, stress management, teamwork, conflict management, problem-solving, time management, critical thinking, autonomy, adaptability, and decision-making. The five soft skills considered most likely to be developed by flipped classrooms were autonomy, analysis, teamwork, communication, and time management. Furthermore, the development of soft skills through the flipped classrooms was independently associated with soft skills training (p=0.008) and the use of the flipped classrooms (p=0.042).</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong><span>: Teachers have knowledge of soft skills and flipped classrooms despite a lack of training, and flipped classrooms contribute to the development of soft skills</span></p>

The Use of Questions in Fostering Critical Thinking Among State Registered Nursing Students in Fako Division of Cameroon

<p>Although critical thinking has become a core competency in the practice of nursing and a major apprehension of undergraduate nursing courses, observably, too many nursing graduates are unable to think critically. This has led to the provision of poor-quality care to patients. How nursing students are taught to acquire critical thinking remains unclear and is a call for concern. This study therefore sought to examine teacher&rsquo;s use of the questioning method in fostering critical thinking in State Registered Nursing (SRN) students in Fako Division of Cameroon. An exploratory sequential research design with the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data for triangulation was adopted for the study. Data was collected via interviews with 16 teachers and 4 focus group discussions with year two students from the selected SRN schools. 42 teachers and 105 year two students were also administered questionnaires. 24 classroom observations were carried out to observe teachers&rsquo; questioning skills and finally 205 examination questions were analysed using Blooms taxonomy. Thematic analysis was used for qualitative data while quantitative data was analysed using the statistical package for social sciences version 20.0 for descriptive statistics. The age range for students was between 18 to 26 years and a majority 92 (87.62%) were females while a majority of the teachers 15 (35.72%), had a work experience of 2-5 years and 6- 10 years. The major theme that emerged from the interviews was &lsquo;question and answers&rdquo; and the categories included &ldquo;selected students&rsquo; response&rdquo; and &ldquo;insufficient motivation&rdquo;. Quantitative data analysis revealed several practice gaps such as 72 (68.5%) of the students disagreed that teachers do not focus questions on particular students, while 70 (66.6%) disagreed that teachers allowed adequate time for them to reflect before responding to questions. The findings also revealed that majority of the written examination questions 199 (97.07%) fell under the category of lower thinking order skills. Teachers do not use the questioning method appropriately, hence cannot effectively foster critical thinking in nursing students. The organisation of training workshops on how to use questions to foster CT is therefore necessary.</p>

A multi-modal sensor dataset for continuous stress detection of nurses in a hospital

<p>Advances in wearable technologies provide the opportunity to monitor many physiological variables continuously. Stress detection has gained increased attention in recent years, especially because early stress detection can help individuals better manage health to minimize the negative impacts of long-term stress exposure. This paper provides a unique stress detection dataset created in a natural working environment in a hospital. This dataset is a collection of biometric data of nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak. Studying stress in a work environment is complex due to the influence of many social, cultural, and individuals experience in dealing with stressful conditions. In order to address these concerns, we captured both the physiological data and associated context pertaining to the stress events. We monitored specific physiological variables, including electrodermal activity, heart rate, skin temperature, and accelerometer data of the nurse subjects. A periodic smartphone-administered survey also captured the contributing factors for the detected stress events. A database containing the signals, stress events, and survey responses is available upon request.</p>

Contrasting soil- and canopy-nurse effects on dependent species in metalliferous systems may be explained by dominant plant functional strategies

<p>Plant-plant interaction studies in metalliferous systems have focused either on the role of facilitation or on the negative effects of elemental allelopathy. However, no studies have investigated both of these effects in the same system, and their relationships with the functional strategy of the nurse species, although this is crucial for the ecological restoration of polluted sites.</p> <p>We assessed the effects of two dominant nurse species, with apparent contrasting strategies, on two target species on a slag heap in the Pyrenees (France). We quantified both long-term soil-engineering and short-term canopy effects on the growth of two target species. We also measured morphological traits and leaf metal concentration of the two nurse species and their effects on air moisture, temperature, and vapour pressure deficit.</p> <p>Nurse functional strategies, as inferred from morphological traits and leaf metal concentration seem to drive their long-term soil engineering effects on target species: Gypsophila repens, the relatively larger and more exploitative species with high leaf metal concentration, had negative long-term effects likely due to elemental allelopathy, whereas Minuartia verna, the relatively smaller and more conservative species with a lower amount of metals in leaves, had neutral long-term effects. Although Gypsophila repens had a slightly stronger positive effect on microclimate than Minuartia verna, this did not turn into higher short-term effects for the target species.</p> <p>Our study highlights the possible role of the nurse's functional strategies in driving the relative importance of long and short-term effects on target species in metalliferous systems. This knowledge is key to increasing our understanding of plant-plant interaction outcomes in metalliferous systems and our ability to restore polluted environments.</p>

Factors associated with work engagement of nurses during the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan: Web-based cross-sectional study

<p>A cross-sectional survey using Google Form was conducted in a target population of 400 nurses working in acute care and psychiatric institutions in Chiba and Tokyo prefectures, Japan. A total of 209 nurses participated in the study. Of these participants, 25 participants with missing survey items were excluded, resulting in a final sample of 184 participants (valid response rate: 46.0%). The survey was conducted from August 8 to September 30, 2021, during the &ldquo;fifth wave&rdquo; of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the number of positive cases was increasing.&nbsp;</p>
