Amazona obscured occurrences, background points, and environmental data
<p><strong>Aim:</strong> Introduced species offer insight on whether and how organisms can shift their ecological niches during translocation. The genus <em>Amazona</em> offers a clear test case, where sister species Red-crowned (<em>A. viridigenalis</em>) and Lilac-crowned Parrots (<em>A. finschi</em>) have established breeding populations in southern California following introduction via the pet trade from Mexico where they do not coexist. After establishment in the 1980s, introduced population sizes have increased, with mixed species flocks found throughout urban Los Angeles. Here, we investigate the differences between the environmental conditions of the native and introduced ranges of these now co-occurring species.</p> <p><strong>Location:</strong> Southern California and Mexico.</p> <p><strong>Method</strong>s: Using environmental data on climate and habitat from their native and introduced ranges, we tested whether Red-crowned and Lilac-crowned Parrots have divergent realized niches between their native ranges, and whether each species has significantly shifted its realized niche to inhabit urban southern California. We also analyzed data from Texas and Florida introductions of Red-crowned Parrots for comparative analysis.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>There are significant differences in the native-range niches of both parrot species, but a convergence into a novel, shared environmental niche into urban southern California, characterized by colder temperatures, less tree cover, and lower rainfall. Texas and Florida Red-crowned Parrots also show evidence for niche shifts with varying levels of niche conservatism through the establishment of somewhat different realized niches.</p> <p><strong>Main Conclusions: </strong>Despite significant niche shifts, introduced parrots are thriving, suggesting a broad fundamental niche and an ability to exploit urban resources. Unique niche shifts in different U.S. introductions indicate that <em>Amazona</em> parrots can adapt to diverse environmental conditions, with cities offering a resource niche and the timing of introduction playing a crucial role. Cities can potentially serve as refugia for threatened parrot species, but the risk of hybridization between species emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring and genetic investigations.</p>
Data from: Geographic distribution of terpenoid chemotypes in Tanacetum vulgare mediates tansy aphid occurrence but not abundance
<p>Intraspecific variation of specialized metabolites in plants, such as terpenoids, are used to determine chemotypes. Tansy (<em>Tanacetum vulgare</em> L.) exhibits diverse terpenoid profiles that affect insect communities. However, it is not fully known whether patterns of their chemical composition and associated insects vary beyond the community scale. Here, we investigated the geographic distribution of mono- and sesquiterpenoid chemotypes in tansy leaves and their relationships with specific insect communities across Germany. We sampled tansy leaves from ten plants with and five plants without aphids in each of 26 sites along a north-south and west-east transect in Germany. Hexane-extracted metabolites from leaf tissues were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Plant morphological traits, aphid occurrence and abundance, and occurrence of ants were recorded locally. The effect of plant chemotype, plant morphological parameters, and abiotic site parameters such as soil types, temperature and precipitation on insect occurrences were analyzed. Plants clustered into four monoterpenoid and four sesquiterpenoid chemotype classes. Monoterpene classes differed in their latitudinal distribution, whereas sesquiterpenes were more evenly distributed across the transect. Aphid and ant occurrence was influenced by monoterpenoids. Plants of monoterpenoid class 1 were colonized by aphids and ants significantly more often than expected by chance, whereas in other classes there were no significant differences. Aphid abundance was affected by soil type, and average annual temperature positively correlated with the occurrence of ants. We found significant geographic patterns in the distribution of tansy chemodiversity and show that monoterpenoids affect aphid and ant occurrence, while the soil type can influence aphid abundance. We show that geographic variation in plant chemistry influences insect community assembly on tansy plants.</p>
Lesser Yellowlegs location data describing the occurrence of birds within harvest zones in the Caribbean and South America
<p>Shorebirds have experienced a precipitous reduction in abundance over the past four decades. While some threats to shorebirds are widespread (e.g. habitat alteration), others are regional and may affect specific populations. Lesser Yellowlegs (<i>Tringa flavipes</i>) are long-distance migrants that breed across the North American boreal biome and have declined in abundance by 60-80% since the 1970s. The documented harvest of Lesser Yellowlegs in the Caribbean and northeastern South America during southward migration is a possible limiting factor for the species, but it is unknown to what extent birds from different breeding origins may be affected. To address the question of differential occurrence in harvest zones during southward migration, we used PinPoint GPS Argos transmitters to track the southward migrations of 85 adult Lesser Yellowlegs from across the species' breeding range and 80° of longitude from Anchorage, Alaska, USA to the Mingan Archipelago, Quebec, Canada. We classified migratory locations as inside or outside three zones with high levels of harvest (Caribbean, coastal Guianas, and coastal Brazil) and then fit generalized additive mixed models to estimate the probability of occurrence of Lesser Yellowlegs in harvest zones according to their breeding origin. Individuals from the Eastern Canada population had a higher probability of occurrence within one or more harvest zones and remained in those zones longer than individuals breeding in Alaska and western Canada. Linear regressions also suggested that longitude of the breeding origin is an important predictor of occurrence in harvest zones during southward migration. Lastly, our findings, combined with other sources of evidence, suggest that current estimated harvest rates may exceed sustainable limits for Lesser Yellowlegs, which warrants further investigation.</p>
Pesticide metabolites database and occurrence data in wine
<p>Pesticide metabolites database is the overview of potential pesticide metabolites originated from selected parent compounds. These metabolites can be found in various source including JMPR (FAO/WHO) documents, EU pesticide database, EFSA etc. Based on their elemental formula respective ions (protonated / deprotonated molecules, their adducts) originated in ESI source can be derived for ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS).</p> <p>Occurrence data were obtained from determination of pesticide residues and their metabolites in samples of grapevine and wine, using UHPLC-HRMS, with the objective of supporting the possibility of the verification of the method of farming. It documents the identification of pesticide metabolites commonly used in conventional farming and provides a characterization of pesticide degradation during grapevine growth, maturation and during the wine-making process.</p> <p>The dataset is useful for anyone working on authentication of organic fruits and vegetables.</p>
State of biodiversity documentation in the Philippines: Metadata gaps, taxonomic biases, and spatial biases in the DNA barcode data of animal and plant taxa in the context of species occurrence data
<p>These files can be categorized into three groups: (1) raw datasets obtained from public databases (i.e., GBIF, BOLD, and GenBank), (2) manually edited files needed for parsing and analysis, and (3) supplementary files for spatial analysis. All are used in the examination of gaps and biases present in Philippine biodiversity data, which can direct research on the taxa and spatial regions that need more sampling.</p>
Annex B – Raw data on occurrence of HMF in bee feed
<p>HMF_raw_occurrence_zenodo.CSV contains the raw occurrence dataset on hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) contaminant as extracted from EFSA DWH in August 2021 on 219 samples of bee feed presented in the opinion as described in its section <em>3.2.1. Occurrence data submitted to EFSA</em>. The data is provided in .csv format. This dataset is compliant with EFSA SSD model and contains two additional columns documenting issues identified in the cleaning process (column: issue) and the action taken (column: outcome) to address the issue (e.g. delete record or update values in specific fields).</p>
U.S. freshwater mussel occurrence data
<p>Natural history collections are uniquely positioned to chronicle biodiversity changes across time and space and are a fundamental data source in taxon-based research and conservation. With over 90 species listed under the Endangered Species Act, freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled animal assemblages in the United States and are the focus of considerable conservation efforts. Unfortunately, natural history collections data are often underleveraged in taxon-based conservation efforts because much of the data are decentralized and nonstandard, and thus, difficult to access and analyze. Our objective herein is to synthesize, standardize, and enrich digitized US freshwater mussel collections data to better suit the needs of conservation stakeholders. We aggregated specimen records from 45 US natural history collections and enriched these records by programmatically standardizing taxonomic information, flagging potentially problematic records, and joining records with freshwater-specific spatial frameworks and their associated hydrological metadata. The assembled dataset includes 408,770 records from 302 species and 1,540 hydrological units (8 digit-level). Using these enriched records, we estimated ecological attributes for over 280 freshwater mussel species including aspects of range size and hydrological preferences. Listed species had significantly fewer occurrences, smaller area of occupancy, and experienced greater declines in area of occupancy in comparison to non-listed species. Listed species also had a higher stream order preference and discharge preference than non-listed species. The synthesized, standardized, and enriched natural history collections data and our novel ecological estimates have revealed and corroborated important insights into freshwater mussel diversity, distribution, and decline. Statistical analysis of chlorate occurrence data in food
<p>In accordance with Article 29 (1) (a) of Regulation (EC) No 178/2002, the European Commission asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2014 for a scientific opinion on the risks for human health related to the presence of chlorate in food from all sources, taking also into account its presence in drinking water. The opinion found that “Chronic exposure of adolescent and adult age classes did not exceed the TDI. However, at the 95th percentile the TDI was exceeded in all surveys in ‘Infants’ and ‘Toddlers’ and in some surveys in ‘Other children’. Chronic exposures are of concern in particular in younger age groups with mild or moderate iodine deficiency.” Food manufacturers have started to optimise their manufacturing processes to lower chlorate residue level in foods and the European Commission in 2017 provided a revised Guidance document on good hygiene practices regarding the use of chlorinated disinfectant. It can therefore be expected that chlorate levels in foods are now lower compared with the levels found in the samples from 2011 to 2014. The European Commission (EC) requested EFSA in 2018 to provide an updated statistical analysis on chlorate occurrence levels in foods. A set of 14 Excel tables containing the statistical analysis of reported results for the analysis of chlorates from pesticides monitoring and contaminants monitoring programmes have been prepared. The data is presented at three levels of aggregation using FoodEx product categories. Analysis was performed for two time points, the 2011-2017 dataset contained 15,741 valid results and the 2015-2017 dataset contained 28,033 valid results. Mean, median and percentile (75th, 90th, 95th) for lower bound, middle bound and upper bound concentration values were calculated. Caution should be applied to percentile values calculated from a limited number of results.</p>
