Biomass burning in the Neotropics is exposing migrating birds to elevated fine particulate matter concentrations
<p><strong>Aim</strong>: A unique risk faced by nocturnally migrating birds is the disorienting influence of artificial light at night (ALAN). ALAN originates from anthropogenic activities that can generate other forms of environmental pollution, including the emission of fine particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5</sub>). PM<sub>2.5</sub> concentrations can display strong seasonal variation originating from natural and anthropogenic processes. How these processes affect seasonal associations with ALAN and PM<sub>2.5</sub> for nocturnally migrating birds has not been documented.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Western Hemisphere</p> <p><strong>Time</strong> <strong>period</strong>: 2021</p> <p><strong>Major taxa studied</strong>: Nocturnally migrating passerine (NMP) bird species</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We combined monthly estimates of PM<sub>2.5</sub> and ALAN with weekly estimates of relative abundance for 164 NMP species within the Western Hemisphere derived using bird observations from eBird. We identify groups of species with shared associations with PM<sub>2.5</sub>.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: PM<sub>2.5</sub> was lowest in North America, especially at higher latitudes during the boreal winter. PM<sub>2.5</sub> was highest in the Amazon Basin, especially during the dry season (August-October). ALAN was highest within eastern North America, especially during the boreal winter. For the NMP species, PM<sub>2.5</sub> associations reached their lowest levels during the breeding season (<10 μg/m<sup>3</sup>) and highest levels during the nonbreeding season, especially for species that winter in Central and South America (~20 μg/m<sup>3</sup>). Species that migrate through Central America in the spring encountered similarly high PM<sub>2.5 </sub>concentrations. ALAN associations reached their highest levels for species that migrate (~12 nW/cm<sup>2</sup>/sr) or spend the nonbreeding season (~15 nW/cm<sup>2</sup>/sr) in eastern North America.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: We did not find evidence that the disorienting influence of ALAN enhances PM<sub>2.5</sub> exposure during stopover in the spring and autumn for NMP species. Rather, our findings suggest biomass burning in the Neotropics is exposing NMP species to consistently elevated PM<sub>2.5</sub> concentrations for an extended period of their annual life cycles. </p>
3D volumes of suspended particulate matter in the Belgian part of the North Sea
<p>This dataset comprises 3D volumes that display the converted mean mass concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPMC) for different size ranges (1-500 µm, 1-3 µm, 3-20 µm, 20-200 µm, 200-500 µm). These 3D grids (2 m resolution) were made for five campaigns, which were conducted during 2020-2021 in the Belgian part of the North Sea. </p> <p>This dataset was used in the research article in Remote Sensing titled "The potential of multibeam sonars as 3D turbidity and SPM monitoring tool in the North Sea" by Praet et al. (2023).</p>

Raw data from: Differentiating siliceous particulate matter in the diets of mammalian herbivores
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>1. Silica is crucial to terrestrial plant life and geochemical cycling on Earth. It is also implicated in the evolution of mammalian teeth, but there is debate over which type of siliceous particle has exerted the strongest selective pressure on tooth morphology.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>2. </span><span>Debate revolves around the amorphous silica bodies (phytoliths) in plants and forms of siliceous grit––i.e., crystalline quartz (sand, soil, dust)––on plant surfaces. The problem is that conventional measures of silica often quantify both particle types simultaneously.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>3. </span><span>Here we describe a protocol that relies on heavy-liquid flotation to separate and quantify siliceous particulate matter in the diets of herbivores. The method is reproducible and well-suited to detecting species- or population-level differences in silica ingestion. In addition, we detected meaningful variation within the digestive tracts of cows, an outcome that supports the premise of ruminal fluid 'washing' of siliceous grit.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>4. </span><span>We used bootstrap resampling to estimate the sample sizes needed to compare species, populations, or individuals in space and time. We found that a minimum sample of 12 individuals is necessary if the species is a browser or as many as 55 if the species is a grazer, which are more variable. But a sample size of 20 is adequate for detecting statistical differences. We conclude by suggesting that our protocol for differentiating and quantifying silica holds promise for testing competing hypotheses on the evolution of dental traits.</span></p>
Bulk and amino acid nitrogen specific isotope data from particulate organic matter and mesozooplankton (1000-2000 µm) from the Mekong River plume and southern South China Sea
<p><strong><span><span>The mean trophic position (TP) of mesozooplankton largely determines how much mass and energy is available for higher trophic levels like fish. Unfortunately, the ratio of herbivores to carnivores in mesozooplankton is difficult to identify in field samples. Here we investigated changes in the mean TP of mesozooplankton in a highly dynamic environment encompassing four distinct habitats in </span></span></strong>the southern South China Sea:<strong> </strong><span>the </span>Mekong River plume, coastal upwelling region, shelf waters, and offshore oceanic waters<strong><span>. </span></strong><span>We used a set of parameters derived from bulk and amino acid nitrogen stable isotopes from particulate organic matter (POM) and four mesozooplankton size fractions to identify changes in the nitrogen source and structure of the planktonic food web across these habitats.</span> We found clear indications of a shift in N sources for biological production from nitrate in near-coastal waters towards an increase in diazotroph-N inputs in oceanic waters where diazotrophs shaped the phytoplankton community. The shift in N source was accompanied by a lengthening of the food chain (increase in the TP), which may provide further support for the connection between diazotrophy and the indirect routing of N through the marine food web. Our combined bulk and amino acid δ<sup>15</sup>N approach also allowed us to estimate the trophic enrichment (TE) of mesozooplankton across the entire regional ecosystem. When put in the context of literature values, our high TE of 5.1‰ suggested a link between ecosystem heterogeneity and the less efficient transfer of mass and energy across trophic levels.</p>
Isotopic data of kelps and particulate organic matter (POM) from relevant studies and estimated contributions of kelps to local consumers
<p>Kelp forests are highly productive coastal habitats that serve as biodiversity hotspots and provide valuable ecosystem services. Despite being one the largest marine biomes, kelp forests have been drastically understudied relative to other marine systems. Notably, while the role of kelp as habitat-forming, or 'foundation species', is well-documented, a comprehensive understanding of kelp forest food web structure is lacking, particularly regarding the importance of kelp-derived energy/nutrients to consumers. Here, we provide a biogeographic perspective on the energetic underpinning of kelp forests based on published literature. We targeted studies which used geochemical proxies – stable isotope analysis – to examine the transfer of carbon from kelp to local consumers. These studies (n=94) were geographically skewed, with >40% from Northern European Seas and Temperate Northeast Pacific. Quantitative estimates for the percentage of kelp energy (or kelp+macroalgae if sources were pooled) incorporated by local consumers came from 43 publications, which studied 141 species and 35 broader taxonomic groups. We examined these data for trends among functional groups and across upwelling regimes. No patterns are evident at present, perhaps due to the paucity or variability of available data. However, energetic subsides from kelps clearly support a wide range of diverse taxa around the globe. We also characterized biogeographic patterns in d<sup>13</sup>C values of kelps and particulate organic matter (POM, a phytoplankton proxy), to evaluate potential limitations of stable isotope analysis in disentangling the relative contributions of pelagic vs. benthic resources to coastal food webs. Globally, kelps and POM differed by >4.5‰, but there was substantial variation among regions and kelp species. Accordingly, we discuss advances in stable isotope techniques which are facilitating more precise analysis of these complex energetic pathways. We end by proposing four main avenues of critical future research that will shed light on the resilience of these communities to global change.</p>
City scale particulate matter monitoring using LoRaWAN based air quality IoT devices
<p>Air Quality (AQ) is a very topical issue for many cities and has a direct impact on citizen health. The AQ of a large UK city is being investigated using low-cost Particulate Matter (PM) sensors, and the results obtained by these sensors have been compared with government operated AQ stations. In the first pilot deployment six AQ Internet of Things (IoT) devices have been designed and built, each with four different low-cost PM sensors, and they have been deployed at two locations within the city. These devices are equipped with LoRaWAN wireless network transceivers to test city scale Low-Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) coverage. The study concludes that i) the physical device developed can operate at a city scale ii) some low-cost PM sensors are viable for monitoring AQ and for detecting PM trends iii) LoRaWAN is suitable for city scale sensor coverage where connectivity is an issue. Based on the findings from this first pilot project a larger LoRaWAN enabled AQ sensor network is being deployed across the city of Southampton in the UK.</p>
