PBG06 Cattle grazing and cattle performance in the Patch-Burn Grazing experiment at Konza Prairie

PBG datasets are associated with a long-term, large-scale study that is addressing the effects of fire-grazing interactions in the context of a Patch-Burn Grazing management system designed to promote grassland heterogeneity. Effects of patch-burn grazing management on plant and animal diversity and the nature and variety of wildlife habitat are being assessed in two replicate management units, each consisting of three pastures (watersheds) designated C03A/C03B/C03C and C3SA/C3SB/C3SC. In each patch-burn grazing unit, one watershed is burned and two that are left unburned in a given year. The burning treatments are rotated annually so that each pasture is burned every third year. Each patch-burn grazing unit is paired with an annually-burned pasture for comparison with traditional grazing systems (C01A and C1SB). All grazing units are stocked with cow/calf pairs from approximately 1 May until 1 Oct at a stocking density equal to 3.2 ha per cow/calf. To examine the impact of patch burning and grazing in all 8 units, we monitor changes in plant species composition, residual biomass, grassland bird populations, insect populations, small mammal populations, soil nutrients, and stream water quality1 (1C3SA/C3SB/C3SC unit only). The KSU Department of Animal Science monitors cattle performance, including weight gain and body condition to assess the economic feasibility of using patch-burn management on a widespread basis. This data set focuses on monitoring (1) the dynamics of cattle grazing on each of two sets of three pastures burned each year on a rotating basis and (2) cattle performance including cow weight gain, body condition, and reproductive performance and calf weight gains.

Trollius transplant performance in the increased temperature, N and snowpack experiment, 2021 - ongoing.

This range expansion experiment was installed in the summer of 2021. We experimentally simulated the range expansion of a subalpine buttercup, Trollius albiflorus, by transplanting six adults into the west edge of the ITEX global change experimental plots, for a total of 288 transplants. To parse apart abiotic and biotic drivers on range expansion, we manipulated half the transplants to ‘reduce below-ground biotic interactions’ using PVC pipe vs ‘control’ biotic conditions where below-ground interactions we left intact. To record above-ground interactions, in 2022-2024 we recorded neighborhood percent cover at the species-level around each Trollius albiflorus transplant using a 10 cm circular hoop. In 2023 and 2024, we quantified soil conditions surrounding each transplant by recording soil moisture (%VWC) and soil temperature (Celsius).

Photosynthetic pigments of water column samples analyzed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), sampled during the Palmer LTER field seasons at Palmer Station, Antarctica, 1991 – 2023.

Phytoplankton pigment sampling was led by Prezelin from the 1991-1992 season through the 1993-1994 season, and then by Vernet from the 1994-1995 season through the 2006-2007 season. Schofield is the third, and current lead, beginning in the 2008-2009 season. Methods have been kept consistent as much as possible over the full time series and different Principal Investigators. Phytoplankton have a suite of accessory pigments in addition to Chlorophyll a, including other Chlorophyll’s (e.g. Chlorophyll b), Xanthophylls, and Carotenes. These accessory pigments can be used as chemotaxonomic markers to assess the composition and distribution of the phytoplankton community. For example, Fucoxanthin is a marker pigment of Diatoms, whereas Alloxanthin is a marker pigment of Cryptophytes. Accessory pigments also assist in photoacclimation and photoprotective processes. Water samples are collected throughout the water column at stations within the Palmer LTER region (primarily B and E, to 50m and 65m respectively). Water samples are filtered onto GF/F filters, and filters kept frozen at -80C until analysis. HPLC analysis is completed following Wright et al (1991). Following the guidelines set by NASA SeaHARRE, we use an internal standard and replicate injects on the HPLC to track recovery and replicability of the pigment extraction methods. Data is unavailable for the Palmer 2009-2010 season due to instrumentation problems and for the Palmer 2011-2012 season due to a freezer failure which resulted in the loss of samples. There is a temporary data gap for the Palmer 2015-2016, Palmer 2016-2017, Palmer 2019-2020, Palmer 2020-2021, and Palmer 2023-2024 seasons because those samples have not been analyzed yet.

Following the guidelines set by NASA SeaHARRE, we use an internal standard and replicate injects on the HPLC to track recovery and replicability of the pigment extraction methods and the HPLC. Data is unavailable for the LMG10-01 cruise due to instrumentation problems and for the LMG12-01 cruise due to a freezer failure which resulted in the loss of samples. There is no data for 2021 because there was no LTER cruise.

Supplementary material for the publication: J.D. Nixon, K. Bhargava and E. Gaura, Energy Performance Gap in Community-Based Solar Energy Interventions: Lessons from two Rwandan Refugee Camps, 2020

<p>The dataset deposited here was prepared under&nbsp;the EPSRC-funded&nbsp;<a href="http://heed-refugee.coventry.ac.uk/">Humanitarian Engineering and Energy for Displacement</a>&nbsp;research project (EP/P029531/1). The project aimed to understand energy needs of displaced communities, create an evidence base on the usage of different energy interventions and provide recommendations for improved design of future energy interventions to better meet the needs of people.&nbsp;</p> <p>As part of the project, we deployed a&nbsp;Standalone Solar System for&nbsp;a Community Hall in Nyabiheke camp, Rwanda, and a PV-battery Microgrid in Kigeme camp, Rwanda. The microgrid supplies power to a playground and two nursery buildings. It powers a total of 20 CPE (each with 3 LEDs) and 10 sockets. The standalone system at Hall powers 7 CPE (with 3 LEDs each) and 4 sockets. The aim of the study was to (a) understand the energy consumption behaviour, light usage and other enabled uses within the set location in each camp (b) create an evidence base on the value of energy and its benefits in displaced contexts (c) identify best practice in the construction, control and operation of the respective systems as a shared energy resource.</p> <p>The system data used for the performance analysis for this study (July 2019 and March 2020) is deposited here along with the metadata. The results from analysis are presented in a paper titled &#39;<strong>Energy Performance Gap in Community-Based Solar Energy Interventions: Lessons from two Rwandan Refugee Camps</strong>&#39; (currently under submission). The scripts for analysis can be found at our Github account&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/cogent-computing">Cogent Labs</a>&nbsp;under HEED-Microgrid and HEED-Hall repositories.</p>

Numerical simulations of AZO/ZnGeO/Cu2O solar cells: Impact of the germanium composition of the buffer layer and the use of low cost fabrication on the photovoltaic performances

<p>The dataset contains the results of the numerical simulations of AZO/ZnGeO/Cu2O solar cell models.</p> <p>The physical parameters of the model are chosen with special care to match literature experimental measurements or are interpolated using the values from binary metal oxides in the case of the new ZnGeO compound. The solar cell structure includes an interface and a defective layer at the ZnGeO/Cu2O heterojunction.</p> <p>The AZO/ZnGeO/Cu2O model results reproduce the photovoltaic characteristics of experimental devices presented by Minami et al. (Applied Physics Express 9, 052301 (2016) DOI:10.7567/APEX.9.052301)</p> <p>The dataset also includes results using models with different germanium compositions for the ZnGeO buffer layer.</p> <p>Other solar cell simulation results are presented to model the impact of low cost fabrication processes, such as spray pyrolysis, by varying the thickness, doping concentration, carrier mobilities and defect concentration of the Cu2O absorber layer as well as the germanium composition of the buffer layer.</p>

Combinatorial and machine learning approaches for the analysis of Cu2ZnGeSe4: influence of the off-stoichiometry on defect formation and solar cell performance

<p>Dataset of the results published in the&nbsp;<a href="https://zenodo.org/record/4742379#.YMzExOgzYmJ">J. Mater. Chem. A, 2021, 9, 10466</a>. The files represent: i)&nbsp;the measured compositional and optoelectronic data of each solar cell, as well as the data generated from the Raman spectra analysis; ii) Raman spectra of the representative cells; iii) Machine Learning discriminants.</p> <p>The elemental composition of the different cells of the combinatorial sample was determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) using a Fischerscope XDV system with a 1 mm spot diameter, a 50 kV acceleration voltage, a Ni10 lter and a 45 s acquisition time. Raman analysis with blue (442 nm) and green (532 nm) excitation wavelengths were performed on the bare absorber, while measurements with NIR (785 nm) were performed in complete devices using Horiba Jobin Yvon FHR640 and iHR320 monochromators coupled with CCD detectors. The first monochromator is optimized for the UV and visible spectral ranges and was used with 442 nm (He&ndash;Cd gas laser) and 532 nm (solid state laser) excitation wavelengths. The second monochromator is optimized for the NIR range and was used with a 785 nm (solid state laser) excitation wavelength. The power&nbsp;density of the lasers was kept below 150 W cm<sup>2</sup> and the spot size was ~70 <span class="math-tex">\(\mu\)</span>m. The measurements were performed in a backscattering configuration through a specific probe designed at IREC. The J&ndash;V characteristics of the devices were obtained under simulated AM1.5 illumination (1000 W m2 intensity at room temperature) using a pre-calibrated Class AAA solar simulator (Abet Technologies Sun 3000).</p>

Data for: Application Performance Monitoring: Trade-Off between Overhead Reduction and Maintainability

<p>Monitoring of a software system provides insights into its runtime behavior, improving system analysis and comprehension. System-level monitoring approaches focus, e.g., on network monitoring, providing information on externally visible system behavior. Application-level performance monitoring frameworks, such as Kieker or Dapper, allow to observe the internal application behavior, but introduce runtime overhead depending on the number of instrumentation probes.<br /> We report on how we were able to significantly reduce the runtime overhead of the Kieker monitoring framework. For achieving this optimization, we employed micro-benchmarks with a structured performance engineering approach. During optimization, we kept track of the impact on maintainability of the framework. In this paper, we discuss the emerged trade-off between performance and maintainability in this context.<br /> To the best of our knowledge, publications on monitoring frameworks provide none or only weak performance evaluations, making comparisons cumbersome. However, our micro-benchmark, presented in this paper, provides a basis for such comparisons. Our experiment code and data are available as open source software such that interested researchers may repeat or extend our experiments for comparison on other hardware platforms or with other monitoring frameworks.</p> <p>This dataset supplements the paper and contains the raw experimental data as well as several generated diagrams for each experiment.</p>
