Time-series of groundwater recharge, Tiber Riber Basin, Italy from 801 CE to the present day
<p>Groundwater, essential for water availability, sanitation, and achieving Sustainable Development Goals, is shaped by climate dynamics and complex hydrogeological structures. Here, we provide a time-series of groundwater recharge from 801 CE to the present day in the Tiber River Basin, Italy, using historical records and hydrological modelling. Groundwater drought occurred in 36% of the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (801-1249) years, 12% of the Little Ice Age (1250-1849) years, and 26% of the Modern Warming Period (1850-2020) years. Importantly, a predominant warm phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, aligned with solar maxima, coincided with prolonged dry spells during both the medieval and modern periods, inducing a reduction in recharge rates due to hydrological memory effects. This study enhances understanding of climate-water interactions, offering a comprehensive view of groundwater dynamics in central Mediterranean and highlighting the importance of the past for sustainable future strategies. Leveraging this understanding can address water scarcity and enhance basin resilience.</p>
A global expert elicitation on present-day human-fire interactions: data & analysis code
<p>These files support "A global expert elicitation on present-day human-fire interactions", accepted for publication in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. doi: <span>10.1098/rstb.2023-0463</span></p> <p>The files contain data from a survey of experts on human-fire interactions as well as code used to process and analyse it.</p> <p>An overview of the files is given below. </p> <h2><strong>1) Data</strong></h2> <p>Raw survey data are provided by geographic region ("GFUS_region"). Data processed to produce analyses in the associated paper are provided as "GFUS_Processed".</p> <p>Columns in data files are named by the question of the survey that generated them (Q1b through Q90). The contents of the associated questions that were asked are given in the data_dictionary.xlsx file.</p> <p>- GFUS_spatial provides the data merged with a shapefile of the survey regions. </p> <p>- "Gov_compare" and "LIFE_SH_fire" provide files to compare survey data with the DAFI and LIFE literature meta-analyses (see Supplementary 3 to the main text).</p> <p>- Question meta-data and question-summary provides an overview of the questions, as well as a topline overview of the numbers of responses and internal coherence (entropy) of survey responses. </p> <h2>2) Code</h2> <p>4 scripts are provided. </p> <p>- Firstly the script that was used to summarise survey responses by geographic region (Summarise_by_region)<br>- Secondly the code used to conduct statistical tests presented in the paper<br>- Thirdly the code used to produce plots in the paper<br>- Fourthly the code used to produce topline descriptive statistics presented in the paper</p>
Connectivity Matrices from biophysical modelling studies for A. millepora coral larvae in the Great Barrier Reef (Australia); present day and future scenarios
<p>These data contain connectivity matrices from biophysical modelling simulations of the dispersal of <em>Acropora millepora</em> coral larvae in the southern Great Barrier Reef (Australia), under present-day and future climate scenarios. The connectivity matrices represent modelled strength of larval transfer from one reef to another, and were obtained using a coupled reef-scale, high-resolution, depth-integrated finite element hydrodynamic model (SLIM) of water currents in the Great Barrier Reef, and Individual-Based particle tracking module. Biological parameters to model larval acquisition and loss of competency and mortality were based on the results of experiments detailed in the related journal article. We include connectivity matrices for 2 different water temperature scenarios representing current and future climates, for three different recent spawning seasons (2008, 2009, 2010), and also for scenarios where low-frequency currents through the domain are modulated to mimic the likely effects from future changes to large-scale circulation extracted from CMIP5 global climate models.</p> <p>We also include files summarising the relative changes, per reef, to certain key connectivity metrics between the 2 temperature scenarios (dispersal distance, local retention, number of incoming connections, "source index", and present day "source index" - all metrics are defined in the related journal article and Methods section of this metadata), averaged over all 3 spawning seasons modelled, as plotted in Figs 1a-e in the related journal article. Additionally, we include a separate file summarising changes to reef recovery times following a disturbance to coral cover between the 2 temperature scenarios, per reef, as modelled using the meta-population model described in the related journal article, and as shown in Fig 2 of the article.</p>

Data from: Genetic differentiation of western capercaillie in the Carpathian Mountains reveal the importance of post glacial expansions and habitat connectivity in understanding the present day European distribution
Population structure and barriers to gene flow are important components for understanding the evolutionary history of a species. Here we study population structure and differentiation in the western capercaillie (Aves: Phasianidae) along the Carpathian Mountains. Further, we compared the levels of population differentiation among capercaillie from the Carpathian Mountains, Balkans (Bulgaria) and the boreal forest (Russia and Sweden) in order to reveal past and current processes which may influence population structure. Tissue samples, non-invasive faeces and feathers and toe pads from museum specimens were used for genetic analyses of mitochondrial (mtDNA) sequences and allelic variation at nine nuclear DNA (nDNA) microsatellite loci. Analyses of mtDNA sequences revealed a southern subclade within the northern clade. Within the northern clade, microsatellite data distinguished two groups: (1) Western Carpathian populations; and (2) Eastern Carpathian and boreal forest populations. Bulgarian populations constituted a third cluster corresponding to the southern phylogenetic subclade. The Western Carpathian populations showed a heterozygote deficiency. The analyses indicate that the abundant Eastern Carpathian populations share alleles with populations from the boreal forest suggesting a common origin of these populations since the last glacial period. On the other hand, the Western Carpathian populations have been isolated over a long period with only a few migrants from the east, thereby becoming differentiated from the eastern and northern populations. The southern populations have been isolated from the northern populations since the last glacial maximum. The molecular analyses did not support the currently recognised taxonomy at the subspecies level.

High-resolution quasi-idealized experiments for future and present-day based upon composites from a decades-long set of recurving landfalling (RCL) North Atlantic ET cases
<p>We present a high-resolution quasi-idealized experiment based upon composites from a decades-long set of recurving landfalling (RCL) North Atlantic extratropical transition (ET) cases. Following Jung and Lackmann (2021), we apply the track-based classification method of Colbert and Soden (2012) to the historical database (1979 to 2018) of North Atlantic RCL ET events; recurving landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) are defined as those which cross 70°W north of 25°N or cross 65W north of 40N and threaten the U.S. East Coast. We use the Atlantic Hurricane Database (HURDAT2) best-track data (Landsea and Franklin 2013); the track-based classification procedure yields 37 RCL ET cases over the 40-year period. To minimize the spread of the selected ET cases in terms of time to complete transition, we apply a threshold of 36 h as in Jung and Lackmann (2021). As HURDAT2 only specifies when transition is complete but does not provide the timeline of the transition, we supplement it with the cyclone phase space (CPS) method of Hart (2003) to diagnose onset and completion times of ET; ET events are first identified by HURDAT2 and then we compute the CPS parameters to confirm the ET timeline for each event using the ERA5 reanalysis dataset (Hersbach et al. 2020). This filtering process yields 21 RCL ET cases. This dataset is initialized by randomized 15-case composites selected from the 21 RCL ET cases as in Jung and Lackmann (2021). This dataset was used to produce figures and tables in the manuscript of Jung and Lackmann (2023, in review). </p> <p>Due to storage limitations, the full dataset is much too large to be published (~ 500GB). Instead, a subset consisting of 3-hourly atmospheric temperature at 17 vertical levels, zonal and meridional wind at 17 vertical levels, 3 hourly accumulated precipitation, mean sea level pressure, 10-m zonal and meridional wind, sea surface temperature, and relative humidity at 17 vertical levels is presented.
