Snowmelt runoff onset maps for stratovolcanoes in the Cascade Range

This data archive contains snowmelt runoff onset maps for stratovolcanoes in the Cascade Range. They were created using the open-source sar_snowmelt_timing toolbox. Raster values correspond to the day of year [0,365] of predicted snowmelt runoff onset. All products are in UTM Zone 10N (EPSG:32610) projected coordinate system.

Data from: Early snowmelt by an extreme warm event affects understory more than overstory trees in Japanese temperate forests

We conducted a warming experiment (four 20 m by 20 m plots) in temperate forests of Japan to determine the effects of earlier snowmelt on both understory dwarf bamboo plants and overstory birch trees. Our experimental treatment advanced snowmelt by about 10 days and increased soil temperatures that were associated with increased rates of soil nitrogen (N) mineralization and nitrification. Furthermore, these changes led to lower C:N ratios of leaves together with the greater growth of understory bamboo vegetation, with no changes in leaf C:N or growth rates of overstory birch trees. Together, our results demonstrate that advancing snowmelt by an extreme warm event in temperate forests is likely to affect N cycling and will benefit understory vegetation without a commensurate change in overstory vegetation, likely due to the increase in available soil N. This is the dataset of plant growth, soil N properties, and plamnt leaf traits obtained by the field snowmelt manipulation experiment.

Snowmelt Timing Maps Derived from MODIS for North America, Version 2, 2001-2018
This data set provides snowmelt timing maps (STMs), cloud interference maps, and a map with the count of calculated snowmelt timing values for North America. The STMs are based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) standard 8-day composite snow-cover product MOD10A2 collection 6 for the period 2001-01-01 to 2018-12-31. The STMs were created by conducting a time-series analysis of the MOD10A2 snow maps to identify the DOY of snowmelt on a per-pixel basis. Snowmelt timing (no-snow) was defined as a snow-free reading following two consecutive snow-present readings for a given 500-m pixel. The count of STM values is also reported, which represents the number of years on record in the STMs from 2001-2018.
