Data from: A global perspective on the functional responses of stream communities to flow intermittence
<p>The current erosion of biodiversity is a major concern that threatens the ecological integrity of ecosystems and the ecosystem services they provide. Due to global change, an increasing proportion of river networks are drying and changes from perennial to non-perennial flow regimes represent dramatic ecological shifts with potentially irreversible alterations of community and ecosystem dynamics. However, there is minimal understanding of how biological communities respond functionally to drying. Here, we highlight the taxonomic and functional responses of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities to flow intermittence across river networks from three continents, to test predictions from underlying trait-based conceptual theory. We found a significant breakpoint in the relationship between taxonomic and functional richness, indicating higher functional redundancy at sites with flow intermittence higher than 28%. Multiple strands of evidence, including patterns of alpha and beta diversity and functional group membership, indicated that functional redundancy did not compensate for biodiversity loss associated with increasing intermittence, contrary to received wisdom. A specific set of functional trait modalities, including small body size, short life span and high fecundity, were selected with increasing flow intermittence. These results demonstrate the functional responses of river communities to drying and suggest that ongoing biodiversity reduction due to global change in drying river networks is threatening their functional integrity. These results indicate that such patterns might be common in these ecosystems, even where drying is considered a predictable disturbance. This highlights the need for the conservation of natural drying regimes of intermittent rivers to secure their ecological integrity.</p>

Stream Flow Daily Data: USGS (FIFE)
The Daily Stream Flow Amounts Data Set contains daily measurements of stream flow for the four LTER stations and for the USGS stream-flow station located on tributaries to Kings Creek. This data set contains measurements from April 1979 to September 1988 for the USGS station, and from June 1985 to December 1987 for the 4 LTER stations. Five stream-flow gauges were placed across creeks in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) section of the FIFE study area. Four of these five stations were maintained and monitored by the LTER staff while the fifth was part of the USGS network of stream flow gauges. The V-throated flume and standpipes used at the LTER weirs operated on the principle that the height of the water level in a standpipe at a specific location within a weir of known dimensions can be converted to volume of water in the stream. The change of this instantaneous volume with time could then be used to compute volumetric stream flow. The stilling pipe installation at the USGS stations operates on the principle that the height of the water level in a standpipe at a specific location within a streambed can be converted to volume of water in the stream. The tracking of the change in stream height with time then enables the calculation of stream flow.
15 Minute Stream Flow Data: USGS (FIFE)
The Fifteen Minute Stream Flow Data from the USGS Data Set contains 15 minute stream flow data from the USGS station located 2.9 miles upstream from the mouth of Kings Creek. The record extends from April 1, 1979 through September 2, 1988. The purpose of this data set was to provide accurate measurements of the stream flow from Kings Creek so that a water budget analysis for the northwest quadrant of the FIFE study area could be performed. The stilling pipe installed at the USGS station operates on the principle that the water level in a standpipe at a specific location within a stream bed can be converted to a volume of water in the stream bed. The tracking of the change in stream height with time then enables the calculation of stream flow.
Stream Flow Storm Data (FIFE)
The Storm Event Stream Flow Data Set were collected during storm events from five treatment areas within the Konza Prairie Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site located within the northwest quadrant of the FIFE study area. These data were recorded so that the hydrology of the streams draining the tallgrass prairie could be studied. Moreover, these data were collected to determine the effect of burn frequency of a watershed upon runoff. Data are available from June 14, 1985 through December 31, 1987. The V-throated flume and standpipes used at the LTER weirs operated on the principle that the height of the water level in the standpipe at a specific location within a weir of known dimensions can be converted to volume of water in the stream. The change of this instantaneous volume with time could then be used to compute volumetric stream flow. The V-notch, sharp-crested weir used in watershed 1D operated on the principle that water flowing past a point of known dimensions per unit time could be converted through standard equations to volumetric flow.

GPM Ground Validation USGS Stream Flow IFloodS V1
The GPM Ground Validation USGS Stream Flow IFloodS dataset was obtained from USGS during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) field campaign that extended from March 30, 2013 through June 30, 2013. The main goal of IFloodS was to evaluate how well the GPM satellite rainfall data can be used for flood forecasting. The USGS monitors streamflow using gauges on streams and rivers throughout the U.S. For the IFloodS field campaign, streamflow data from about 200 gauges in the Iowa IFloodS study area were downloaded from the USGS web site as support data for the campaign. The USGS streamflow data were collected in real-time and provide measurements at 15-60 minute intervals. These USGS Stream Flow data are available in XML format.
GPM Ground Validation Iowa Flood Center (IFC) Stream Flow IFloodS V1
The GPM Ground Validation Iowa Flood Center (IFC) Stream Flow IFloodS dataset was obtained from the IFC during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) field campaign that extended from March 31, 2013 through June 30, 2013. The main goal of IFloodS was to evaluate how well the GPM satellite rainfall data can be used for flood forecasting. The IFC monitors stage levels using sensors attached to the side of bridges throughout Iowa. The sensor data are downloaded from the Iowa Flood Information System (IFIS) as support data for the IFloodS campaign. The IFC Stream Flow data were collected in real-time and provide measurements at 15 minute intervals. These IFC Stream Flow IFloodS data are available in XML format.
