Data from: Genomic signatures of paleodrainages in a freshwater fish along the southeastern coast of Brazil: genetic structure reflects past riverine properties

Past shifts in connectivity in riverine environments (for example, sea-level changes) and the properties of current drainages can act as drivers of genetic structure and demographic processes in riverine population of fishes. However, it is unclear whether the same river properties that structure variation on recent timescales will also leave similar genomic signatures that reflect paleodrainage properties. By characterizing genetic structure in a freshwater fish species (Hollandichthys multifasciatus) from a system of basins along the Atlantic coast of Brazil we test for the effects of paleodrainages caused by sea-level changes during the Pleistocene. Given that the paleodrainage properties differ along the Brazilian coast, we also evaluate whether estimated genetic diversity within paleodrainages can be explained by past riverine properties (i.e., area and number of rivers in a paleodrainage). Our results demonstrate that genetic structure between populations is not just highly concordant with paleodrainages, but that differences in the genetic diversity among paleodrainages correspond to the joint effect of differences in the area encompassed by, and the number of rivers, within a paleodrainage. Our findings extend the influence of current riverine properties on genetic diversity to those associated with past paleodrainage properties. We discuss how these findings may explain the inconsistent support for paleodrainages in structuring divergence from different global regions and the importance of taking into account past conditions for understanding the high species diversity of freshwater fish that we currently observe in the world, and especially in the Neotropics.

Aqueous self-assembly of a wide range of sophorolipid and glucolipid microbial bioamphiphiles (biosurfactants): considerations about the structure-properties relationship

<p><em>Hypothesis</em></p> <p>Sophorolipids are well-known scaled-up microbial glycolipid biosurfactants with strong commercialization potential for their biological origin, mildness compared to classical surfactants. However, their properties are still poorly understood, they cannot be predicted and their behaviour in solution challenges half a century of knowledge generated in the field of surfactant science. By studying forty different types of sophorolipids, this work contributes to better tackle their structure-property relationship and identify which chemical groups in their molecular structure have a critical influence towards their self-assembly properties in water.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><em>Experiments</em></p> <p>This work explores the self-assembly properties at room temperature of sophorolipids and sophorosides in water using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), optical and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). Structural features like the number of sugar headgroups, acetylation, end-chain functional group, (un)saturation, lactonization and length of chain are varied both to rationalize their impact and to understand their effect on the self-assembly.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><em>Findings</em></p> <p>The number of sugar groups, pH, (un)saturation and lactonization were found to have a critical impact in respect to the sophorolipids self-assembly. The chemical nature of the end-chain functional group and the chain length were found to have a possibly critical impact, depending on the specific type of chemical function (COOH and long chains are critical). COMSOL simulation & example datasets for: Nonuniform structural properties of wings confer sensing advantages

<p>Sensory feedback is essential to both animals and robotic systems for achieving coordinated, precise movements. Mechanosensory feedback, which provides information about body deformation, depends not only on the properties of sensors but also on the structure in which they are embedded. In insects, wing structure plays a particularly important role in flapping flight: in addition to generating aerodynamic forces, wings provide mechanosensory feedback necessary for guiding flight while undergoing dramatic deformations during each wingbeat. However, the role that wing structure plays in determining mechanosensory information is relatively unexplored. Insect wings exhibit characteristic stiffness gradients and are subject to both aerodynamic and structural damping. Here we examine how both of these properties impact sensory performance, using finite element analysis combined with sensor placement optimization approaches. We show that wings with nonuniform stiffness exhibit several advantages over uniform stiffness wings, resulting in higher accuracy of rotation detection and lower sensitivity to the placement of sensors on the wing. Moreover, we show that higher damping generally improves the accuracy with which body rotations can be detected. These results contribute to our understanding of the evolution of the nonuniform stiffness patterns in insect wings, as well as suggest design principles for robotic systems.</p>

Data from: Insight into the structural and magnetotransport properties of epitaxial alpha-Fe2O3/Pt(111) heterostructures: The role of the reversed layer sequence

<p>We report on the chemical structure and spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in epitaxial α-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>(hematite)(0001)/Pt(111) bilayers with hematite thicknesses of 6 nm and 15 nm grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a MgO(111) substrate. Unlike previous studies that involved Pt overlayers on hematite, the present hematite films were grown on a stable Pt buffer layer and displayed structural changes as a function of thickness. These structural differences (the presence of a ferrimagnetic phase in the thinner film) significantly affected the magnetotransport properties of the bilayers. We observed a sign change of the SMR from positive to negative when the thickness of hematite increased from 6 nm to 15 nm. For α-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>(15 nm)/Pt, we demonstrated room-temperature switching of the Néel order with rectangular, nondecaying switching characteristics. Such structures open the way to extending magnetotransport studies to more complex systems with double asymmetric metal/hematite/Pt interfaces.</p>
