Annual tree growth for Red and Sugar Maples in six forest plots distributed around Ann Arbor, MI and around the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS), 1999 to 2022

Plot levels Ca and Al additions study at WS6 BACKGROUD: To better evaluate the interaction of Ca depletion and Al mobilization on a northern hardwood forest, the Nutrient Perturbation (NuPert) study was initiated in 1995, west of the biogeochemical reference watershed (W6) at the HBEF (43.95411°N, 71.74779°W). The study area is on a south-facing slope, with an elevational range of 700–760 m, and most soils are classified as either Aquic Haplorthods or Aquic Haplumbredts (Halman et al. 22015 and references therein). Twelve sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marshall) dominated plots (45 m × 45 m) were randomly assigned to one of three treatments (Ca addition, Al addition, or control (no addition)), yielding four replicates of each treatment in the study. In addition to sugar maple, American beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) are co-occurring tree species in these plots, whereas hobblebush (Viburnum lantanoides Michx.) and striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum L.) dominate the understory. Treatments began in 1995 with annual CaCl2 (2.5 g·m−2) and AlCl3 (0.9 g·m−2) applications occurring each fall or spring during leafless periods. The use of CaCl2 was halted in 1999 in favor of a one-time application (38 g·m−2) of wollastonite (CaSiO3, a slow-release form of Ca). Thereafter, AlCl3 additions occurred in alternate years in fall or spring. Foliage was collected from sunlit branches in the upper to mid canopy dominant sugar maple trees. Five trees per plot of each group were selected for sampling in August 2008. There was an ice storm in 1998 at this site which might have interfered with this study findings. In 2009, tiny sapwood plugs were also collected. All the analyses were carried out using the procedures described under section A (Ca-supplementation study). Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest; concentrations of foliar metabolites: polyamines, amino acids, chlorophyll, carotenoids, soluble proteins, soluble elements, sugars, and total nitrogen and carbon in red maple (Acer rubrum) trees.
Foliage was collected in 2015 and 2017 from red maple trees at the Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Analyses of foliar metabolites include polyamines, amino acids, chlorophylls, carotenoids, soluble proteins, soluble inorganic elements, sugars, and total nitrogen and carbon. There are six (11 x 14m) plots in total in this study; two control (plots 1 and 2), two warmed 5 degrees (°) Celsius (C) above ambient throughout the growing season (plots 3 and 4), and two warmed 5 °C in the growing season, with snow removal during the winter to induce soil freezing and then warmed with buried heating cables to create a subsequent thaw (plots 5 and 6). Each soil freeze/thaw cycle includes 72 hours of soil freezing followed by 72 hours of thaw. Four kilometers (km) of heating cable are buried in the soil to warm these four plots. Together, these treatments led to warmer growing season soil temperatures and an increased frequency of soil freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) in winter. Our goal was to determine how these changes in soil temperature affect foliar nitrogen (N) and carbon metabolism of red maple trees. These data were gathered as a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Data from: Seascape genomics of the sugar kelp Saccharina latissima along the North Eastern Atlantic latitudinal gradient
<p>Temperature is one of the most important range-limiting factors for many seaweeds. Driven by the recent climatic changes, rapid northward shifts of species' distribution ranges can potentially modify the phylogeographic signature of Last Glacial Maximum. We explored this question in detail in the cold-tolerant kelp species <i>Saccharina latissima</i>, using microsatellites and double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD-seq) derived single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to analyze the genetic diversity and structure in 11 sites spanning the entire European Atlantic latitudinal range of this species. In addition, we checked for statistical correlation between genetic marker allele frequencies and three environmental proxies (sea surface temperature, salinity, and water turbidity). Our findings revealed that genetic diversity was significantly higher for the northernmost locality (Spitsbergen) compared to the southern ones (Northern Iberia), which we discuss in light of the current state of knowledge on phylogeography of <i>S</i>. <i>latissima</i> and the potential influence of the recent climatic changes on the population structure of this species. Seven SNPs and 12 microsatellite alleles were found to be significantly associated with at least one of the three environmental variables. We speculate on the putative adaptive functions of the genes associated with the outlier markers and the importance of these markers for successful conservation and aquaculture strategies for <i>S. latissima</i> in this age of rapid global change.</p>

In 1870 Ste. Madeleine was taken over by the Colonial Company, a British Conglomerate, that built the first modern factory there during the process of "Centralisation" which reduced the number of smaller and less efficient works in favour of a larger, modern and more efficient factory.Ste. Madeleine was surrounded by several estates. There was Belle Vue to the north, Cedar Hill to the east, St Charles to the south and Petite Morne to the west. As time went on, many of these estates were taken over by the Colonial Company and then the New Colonial company, that came later (in 1895). Prior to nationalisation, New Colonial Co Ltd in 1913 became the Sainte Madeleine Sugar Co Ltd. It was once reputed to be 'the finest factory in the West Indies'. By 1913 Brechin Castle estate, including Sevilla Estate, was owned by Trinidad Estates Co. under attorney W.G. Kay. At the time it included the following estates; Rivulet, Milton, Caroni and Sainte Helena. The company was managed by J.W. Arbuckle and J. Gilbert. The Engineer was F.M. Goodwin.In 1923 a group of estates near Tacarigua known collectively as Orange Grove and belonging to West Indian Estates changes to Trinidad Sugar Estates Limited. In 1924 the original Trinidad Sugar Estates Limited became part of Caroni Sugar Estates (Trinidad) Limited with factories at Caroni (note: the original Caroni Estate, close to Caroni village, was originally known as "Frederick Estate" and today Frederick settlement still exists) and Brechin Castle. Vertical stratification of leaf physical traits exerts bottom-up pressures on insect herbivory in a sugar maple temperate forest
<p>Do vertical gradients in temperate forest structure insect herbivore communities? We tested the hypothesis that the increase in light intensity from understory to forest canopy level drives differences in leaf physical traits and budburst phenology that impact insect herbivores and thus play a role in structuring both herbivore communities and the leaf damages they cause. Twelve sugar maple <em>(Acer saccharum)</em> sites were monitored in southern Quebec, examining insect herbivore patterns from understory to the shaded and sun canopy over the summers of 2020, 2021, and 2022. Additionally, we recorded leaf physical traits, temperature, humidity, and sun exposure. Our findings revealed that leaf thickness increased along the vertical gradient in 2021, making leaves less favorable to herbivores in the canopy level. Accordingly, we recorded a consistent decrease in insect herbivory damage rates from the understory to the shaded canopy and sun canopy in 2020 and 2021, driven by leaf cutters, skeletonizers, stipplers, and leaf miners. These results support our hypothesis that variation in plant physical traits due to sun exposure contributes to the vertical stratification of insect damage. In 2022, the gradient of insect herbivore abundance corroborated the observed damage trends from the previous years. Moreover, we calculated an average annual herbivory rate of 9.1% of the leaf surface in our study site, suggesting limited evidence supporting a significant contribution of background herbivory to the decline of sugar maple forests. Overall, our study highlights the importance of vertical gradients in structuring insect herbivore communities and emphasizes the role of leaf traits in mediating these interactions.</p>
Palatability of Insecticides and Protein in Sugar Solutions to Argentine Ants
<p>This is the Raw Data and R Markdown statistics for BioRxiv and Pest Management Science Journal.</p> <p>Title: Palatability of Insecticides and Protein in Sugar Solutions to Argentine Ants</p> <p>Summary: </p> <p><span>Invasive ant species like <em><span>Linepithema humile</span></em> cause significant ecological and economic harm, making effective control strategies essential. Insecticide baits are currently the most effective approach for controlling ants. </span><span>Therefore, quantifying how palatable or unpalatable baits, bait additives, or toxicants are, is critical for developing effective control methods.</span><span> </span><span>It has recently been demonstrated that in the comparative evaluation of foods, animals that are aware of both a test food and a comparator food exhibit greatly increased sensitivity when detecting the unpalatability of liquid baits. </span><span>Here, we deploy a newly developed comparative evaluation methodology to examine the palatability to <em>L. humile </em>workers of three toxicants used in invasive ant control: Fipronil, spinosad, and imidacloprid, as well as egg white protein.</span></p> <p><span>Ants showed no significant preference between pure sucrose and sucrose-toxicant solutions, indicating that they either cannot detect the toxicants or that they do not find them distasteful. </span><span>Survival tests confirmed that the toxicant concentrations used were lethal, with a survival rate of 50% or below after 72 hours. However, ants found egg protein additive unpalatable, significantly preferring pure sucrose to a sucrose-egg protein mix.</span></p> <p><span>These findings confirm that three major toxicants are suitable for use in baits, and that reported abandonment or avoidance of toxic baits is not due to the unpalatability of these toxicants. However, the addition of egg protein to sucrose baits, even at ratios which optimise colony growth, is likely counterproductive. Future research should investigate the relative preference of invasive ants for various bait matrixes over naturally available food, ensuring more effective pest management strategies.</span></p>
Evaluation of lethal control of introduced sugar gliders
<p>Lethal control of invasive mammalian predators can be controversial and is rarely a 'silver bullet' for conservation problems. Evaluating the efficacy of lethal control is important for demonstrating the benefits to threatened species are real and detecting unexpected perverse outcomes. We implemented a pilot study to evaluate if lethal control of introduced sugar gliders Petaurus breviceps can reduce the rate of nest predation on Tasmanian hollow nesting birds including swift parrots (Lathamus discolor). Using a before-after-control-impact design, we implemented a lethal control treatment whereby we attempted to remove sugar gliders from three treatment sites. In each time period across sites we monitored quail eggs in nest boxes to record predation, and used cameras to detect sugar gliders.We caught nine sugar gliders over three treatment sites. The model best supported by the data indicated an effect of site x time period on both egg survival and the rate of glider detection on cameras. There was no support for an effect of treatment on our data. We also recorded predation of a real swift parrot nest by sugar gliders at a treatment site where we recorded no predation of quail eggs. Our pilot study shows that at small scales, intensive lethal control of gliders yields low capture rates and no discernible effect on the metrics we measured. We conclude that alternative approaches to controlling the impact of sugar gliders, such as habitat protection, are critical in this study system before lethal control is widely implemented as a management tool.</p>
