Data from: Accelerate low water corrosion: the microbial sulphur cycle in microcosm

Accelerated low water corrosion is a form of marine steel corrosion caused by bacterial activity. It has a global spread and is potentially responsible for billions of pounds of damage. We have determined in detail both the chemistry of corrosion products and the associated microbiology at a UK site. The corrosion products form a layered structure with iron sulphides at the steel surface and iron oxides and sulphates in contact with water. The iron sulphides are formed by reaction of steel with hydrogen sulphide formed by sulphate reducing bacteria and are oxidised through a series of sulphur oxidation states by sulphide oxidising bacteria, forming acid at all stages and encompassing the whole of the bacterial sulphur cycle. The bacteria involved are endemic in anoxic bed sediment, and the process is a response to the presence of steel as an electron donor, and the generation of anoxic microenvironments within corrosion products.

Figure 8 in Elasmobranchs from the Lower Triassic Sulphur Mountain Formation near Wapiti Lake (BC, Canada)

Figure 8. Wapitiodus homalorhizo sp. nov.: structure of fin spine in cross-sections (A–D) through the apical half of specimen UALVP 46528 (thin sections T1–3) and the external view of the apex of the fin spine in specimen UALVP 46529 (E, silicon peel dusted with NH4Cl). A, overview: note the large but secondarily obliterated, partly remodeled cavity and the large tubercles clearly delimited from the core of the fin spine by lines of arrested growth. B, note the couple of displaced and stacked tubercles in the left postero-lateral corner (as indicated in A) at a slightly lower level of the spine (thin section T3). C, note the internal structure in the posterolateral wall of the fin spine that is characteristic of ctenacanthoids. D, attempts at restoration of the cross-section through the apical third. E, note the well-spaced stellate tubercles (arrowhead 2), the absence of recurved denticles in the posterolateral wall (arrowhead 1, but also see Fig. 10 and the description of specimen UALVP 46528) and the partly preserved anterior rim (arrowhead 3).

OMI/Aura Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) Total Column Daily L2 Global Gridded 0.125 degree x 0.125 degree V3 (OMSO2G) at GES DISC

This Level-2G daily global gridded product OMSO2G is based on the pixel level OMI Level-2 SO2 product OMSO2. OMSO2G data product is a special Level-2 gridded product where pixel level products are binned into 0.125x0.125 degree global grids. It contains the data for all scenes that have observation time between UTC times of 00:00:00 and 23:59:59.9999 . All data pixels that fall in a grid box are saved without averaging. Scientists can apply a data filtering scheme of their choice and create new gridded products. The OMSO2G data product contains almost all parameters that are contained in OMSO2 files. For example, in addition to three values of SO2 Vertical column corresponding to three a-priori vertical profiles used in the retrieval algorithm, and ancillary parameters, e.g., UV aerosol index, cloud fraction, cloud pressure, geolocation, solar and satellite viewing angles, and quality flags. The OMSO2G files are stored in the version 5 EOS Hierarchical Data Format (HDF-EOS5). Each file contains daily data from approximately 15 orbits. The maximum file size for the OMTO3G data product is about 146 Mbytes.

Sentinel-5P TROPOMI Sulphur Dioxide SO2 1-Orbit L2 5.5km x 3.5km V2 (S5P_L2__SO2____HiR) at GES DISC

Starting from August 6th in 2019, Sentinel-5P TROPOMI along-track high spatial resolution (~5.5km at nadir) has been implemented.Starting from July 13th in 2020, five Sentinel-5P TROPOMI level-2 products including total and tropospheric column ozone, sulfur dioxide, CLOUD, and formaldehyde have been generated in processor version 2.For data before August 6th of 2019, please check S5P_L2__SO2____1 data collection. For data between August 6th of 2019 and July 13th of 2020, please check S5P_L2__SO2____HiR_1 data collection. For data after July 13th of 2020, please check S5P_L2__SO2____HiR_2 data collection. The Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (Sentinel-5P or S5P) satellite mission is one of the European Space Agency's (ESA) new mission family - Sentinels, and it is a joint initiative between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the ESA. The sole payload on Sentinel-5P is the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), which is a nadir-viewing 108 degree Field-of-View push-broom grating hyperspectral spectrometer, covering the wavelength of ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS, 270nm to 495nm), near infrared (NIR, 675nm to 775nm), and shortwave infrared (SWIR, 2305nm-2385nm). Sentinel-5P is the first of the Atmospheric Composition Sentinels and is expected to provide measurements of ozone, NO2, SO2, CH4, CO, formaldehyde, aerosols and cloud at high spatial, temporal and spectral resolutions. The retrieval algorithm for Sentinel-5P TROPOMI SO2 from ultraviolet spectral measurements is the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) method. The relevant information of absorption cross section, instrument characteristics, cloud cover, and geolocation are utilized to derive SO2 slant column density (SCD). A sensitive spectral window of 312 to 326 nm is set as the baseline for the slant column fit with another two spectral windows (325 to 335 nm, 360 to 390 nm) to account for the non-linear effects in those high column amount cases. The SCD is then corrected with the empirical offsets to the systematic biases. The air mass factor (AMF) Look-up table has been created with the LIDORT radiative transfer model. The outputs of the DOAS algorithm are SO2 vertical column density (VCD), SCD, AMF, the DOAS-type averaging kernels (AK), and error estimates.

OMI/Aura Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) Total Column 1-orbit L2 Swath 13x24 km V004 (OMSO2) at GES DISC

The OMI/Aura Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) Total Column 1-orbit L2 Swath 13x24 km (OMSO2) data product has been updated with a principal component analysis (PCA)-based algorithm (v2) with new SO2 Jacobian lookup tables and a priori profiles that significantly improve retrievals for anthropogenic SO2. The data files (or granules) contain different estimates of the vertical column density (VCD) of SO2 depending on the users investigating anthropogenic or volcanic sources. Files also contain quality flags, geolocation and other ancillary information. The lead scientist for the OMSO2 product is Can Li.The OMSO2 files are stored in the version 5 EOS Hierarchical Data Format (HDF-EOS5). Each file contains data from the daylit half of an orbit (~53 minutes). There are approximately 14 orbits per day. The resolution of the data is 13x24 km2 at nadir, with a swath width of 2600 km and 60 pixels per scan line every 2 seconds.
