RESEARCH DATA IN PALEOBOTANICAL: DATASET OF THE THIN PETROGRAPHIC SLIDES AT FOSSIL WOODS
<p>Objective: The study aims to disseminate and analyze the collection of fossil wood stored in the collection of thin slides sections of the paleobotany collection of the Department of Paleontology and Stratigraphy of the Institute of Geosciences of a University in southern Brazil. Thin sheets of petrified wood are described, while research data used for research in Geosciences, specifically, seeks to compose a model for the use of this type of sheet in paleobotany, allowing to visualize its representativeness in studies published in 40 years, will be obtained the anatomical characteristics of fossil woods and aiming to define their systematic affinities as a specific typology of research data in Geosciences.<br> Methods: The methodology involves interviewing a paleobotany specialist and using different techniques applied in metric studies to map their scientific production. Thus, a dataset of (20) thin slides sections of petrified fossil wood used in the study Stressing environmental conditions in the “petrified forest” from the Mata Sequence in the Triassic context of the Paraná Basin published by the Journal of South American Earth Sciences, according to (DOI: 10.1016/j.jsames.2023.104415). According to the methodology used, these thin petrified wood sheets have the potential to identify paleoclimatic signatures based on the anatomical characteristics of fossil wood. In addition to this case study, which represents a collection of more than (2.000) thousand blades of fossil wood and about 40 years of research, this paleobotany collection of the Department is reused in methodology classes. It comprises a database of research physicists that provides information about anatomical features, systematic affinities, paleoclimatic conditions, and paleoenvironmental insights.<br> Potential for reuse: Its reuse, registration, storage, identification, and preservation of thin sections as a type of research data used by paleobotany aims to improve the methodology associated with the organization of a physical database of the institution. The research data, and blades of fossil wood, are being digitized, and soon, all will be available under the CC BY 4.0 license in the ZENODO repository, according to the sample described here in this data paper. Interlocked thin-ply reinforcements for improved fracture toughness and compression after impact - 0 degree tabs
<p>This dataset contains data showing the effect of thin-ply reinforcement units, interlocked with a tab-and-slit geometry, on the fracture toughness of CFRP laminates. This dataset forms an addition to the dataset previously published here: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1476886. The previous dataset contains toughness data for reinforcements with tabs at 45 degrees. This dataset contains toughness data for reinforcements with tabs at 0 degrees.</p> <p>The reinforcement concept was first presented at the 18th European Conference on Composite Materials (2018, Athens, Greece). More information on the concept can be found at: http://wwwf.imperial.ac.uk/aeronautics/research/pinholab/interlock-tabs/. Links to publications connected to this data will be added to the Zenoto meta-data as they are published.</p> <p>For the reinforcement concept, both mode I and mode II fracture toughnesses were measured. The mode I data was acquired using DCB specimens, and the mode II data was obtained from 4-point end notch flexure (4ENF) tests. Force, displacement, crack length, and strain energy release rate during the test are provided for all specimens.</p>

Dataset on light measuments in the understory of a Tropical forest restoration submitted to four thinning intensities through chemical management
<p>The lack of information on the management of light in tropical forests causes a technical constraint for timber production in restoration sites, especially given the light restrictions for timber production. This issue could be amended with the development of methods to easily manage and estimate light availability, targeting practices that balance restoration success and productivity. We conducted the study that gathered this data in an area within the Atlantic Forest, Brazil, where we tested the efficiency of chemical thinning fast-growing species to increase light availability in the understory of a five-year-old restoration planting. Our goal was to increase the growth rates of desirable timber species in the understory of the restoration site. <br>Moreover, we tested the viability of using hemispherical photography taken with a smartphone to assess light incidence and assist restoration management practices. We calculated the percentage of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) using a ceptometer in four different thinning intensities and compared them to the smartphone measures using correlation analysis and generalized mixed models. Chemical thinning increased light incidence in the understory Light management through PAR and canopy opening were highly correlated overall, especially after three months of management and above 60% of the basal area thinned. Data demonstrates the potential of chemical thinning as a management practice to enhance light availability in the understory of tropical forest restoration sites and highlights the value of using smartphones and fisheye clips for the indirect assessment of light conditions. </p>

Data from: Thinning and prescribed burning increase shade-tolerant conifer regeneration in a fire excluded mixed-conifer forest
<p>Fire exclusion and past management have altered the composition, structure, and function of frequent-fire forests throughout western North America. In mixed-conifer forests of the California Sierra Nevada, fire exclusion has exacerbated the effects of drought and endemic bark beetles, resulting in extensive mortality of fire-adapted pine species. Thinning and prescribed fire are widely used in these forests to reduce fuels, moderate fire behavior, and restore ecosystems. Tree regeneration influences future forest composition and structure, and therefore future resilience to disturbances, but long-term effects of thinning and prescribed burning on tree regeneration after prolonged fire exclusion are poorly understood. We measured tree regeneration one year prior to, and periodically for 16 years following thinning and prescribed burning in a mixed-conifer forest in the Sierra Nevada, California, USA. We asked three questions. How did the composition and density of tree regeneration change after thinning and prescribed burning? Did pretreatment vegetation types influence conifer regeneration density after treatments? Did planting after overstory thinning increase regeneration density of native pine species?</p> <p>Sixteen years after treatments, combined natural regeneration of shade-tolerant white fir (Abies concolor) and incense-cedar (<em>Calocedrus</em> <em>decurrens</em>) averaged 2,032 trees per hectare (tph) after understory thinning, and 7,745 tph after understory thinning combined with prescribed burning, increases of 37% and 146% from pretreatment densities. In contrast, combined natural regeneration of white fir and incense-cedar averaged 497 tph after overstory thinning, 780 tph after overstory thinning with prescribed burning, 113 tph after prescribed burning alone, and 807 tph in untreated controls, all of which were declines from pretreatment densities. Natural regeneration of white fir and incense-cedar was consistently an order of magnitude greater than Jeffrey pine (<em>Pinus</em> <em>jeffreyi</em>) and sugar pine (<em>Pinus</em> <em>lambertiana</em>), whose combined densities 16 years after treatments averaged 37 tph across treatments and did not significantly respond to thinning and/or prescribed burning. Natural conifer regeneration after treatments varied by pre-treatment vegetation type (closed canopy, <em>Ceanothus</em> <em>cordulatus</em> shrub-dominated, and open sparse), with large increases of natural regeneration after understory thinning in closed canopy and <em>Ceanothus</em> shrub vegetation types. Planting increased sugar pine regeneration density after overstory thinning, marginally increased Jeffrey pine regeneration after overstory thinning combined with prescribed burning, and increased white fir regeneration after overstory thinning with and without burning. No treatments reduced white fir and incense-cedar natural regeneration while simultaneously increasing natural pine regeneration, suggesting new thinning, burning, and planting approaches may be required to meet regeneration restoration objectives.</p>

Data from: Promoting success in thin layer sediment placement: effects of sediment grain size and amendments on salt marsh plant growth and greenhouse gas exchange
<p>Thin layer sediment placement (TLP) is a method to mitigate factors resulting in loss of elevation and severe alteration of hydrology, such as sea level rise and anthropogenic modifications, and prolong the lifespan of drowning salt marshes. However, TLP success may vary due to plant stress associated with reductions in nutrient availability and hydrologic flushing or through the creation of acid sulfate soils. This study examined the influence of sediment grain size and soil amendments on plant growth, soil and porewater characteristics, and greenhouse gas exchange for three key US salt marsh plants: <em>Spartina alterniflora, Spartina patens, </em>and <em>Salicornia pacifica. </em>We found that bioavailable nitrogen concentrations (measured as extractable NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>-N) and porewater pH and salinity were found to have an inverse relationship with grain size, while soil redox was more reducing in finer sediments. This suggests that utilizing finer sediments in TLP projects will result in a more reduced environment with higher nutrient availability, while larger grain-sized sediments will be better flushed and oxidized. We further found that grain size had a significant effect on vegetation biomass allocation and rates of gas exchange, although these effects were species-specific. We found that soil amendments (biochar and compost) did not subsidize plant growth but were associated with increases in soil respiration and methane emissions. Biochar amendments were additionally ineffective in ameliorating acid sulfate conditions. This study uncovers complex interactions between sediment type and vegetation, emphasizing limitations of soil amendments. The findings aid restoration project managers in making informed decisions regarding sediment type, target vegetation, and soil amendments for successful TLP projects.</p>
