Size-fractionated chlorophyll from water column bottle samples collected during NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2017.
Size-fractionated chlorophyll a and phaeopigments are measured from discrete bottle samples collected during CTD-rosette casts on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises (ongoing since 2017), as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. Sampling frequency is approximately seasonal. Samples were processed by three lab groups using different methods. Size fractions in addition to whole seawater (>0.7 micron) include >5 , <10, >10, and >20 microns with some samples pre-filtered <200 microns. Pigments were analyzed using fluorometers in which fluorescence was measured versus a blank and a standard, and final concentrations were calculated in micrograms per liter (or mg per cubic meter). Some of the data are from cruises in collaboration with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).

As a result of climate change, the Rocky Mountain Front Range is experiencing warmer summers and earlier snowmelt. Due to the importance of snow for regulating soil temperature, growing season length, and available moisture in alpine ecosystems, even small shifts in the snow-free period could have large impacts. The focus of the Black Sand Extended Growing Season Length Experiment is to examine how terrain-related differences in climate exposure influence the way alpine habitats respond to climate change via earlier snowmelt. To simulate how climate exposure may affect plant communities, NWT LTER researchers established 5 experimental sites each containing a pair 10 x 40m rectangular plots. These sites include north and south facing aspects, subalpine and alpine tundra meadows in a range of hydrological conditions (e.g. dry meadows, moist meadows, wet meadows). We accelerated snowmelt in one plot of each block by adding chemically inert black sand, while keeping the second plot as an unmanipulated control; black sand was added to these plots after snow had naturally melted. This dataset includes geolocations of individual subplots and sensors within the experiment, measured in summer 2023.

SBC LTER: Reef: Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: Transect geospatial metadata
The data table provides summaries of depth information (mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation) for all of the transects surveyed as part of the SBC LTER Kelp Forest Monitoring program. All data are expressed in meters, reference to mean lower low water (MLLW). Each value is the result of 160 observations, four at each meter (n=160). The sampling locations in this dataset are 40 meter transects at nine reef sites along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel and at two sites on the north side of Santa Cruz Island. The PDF document provides descriptive information of the transect such as headings and relative locations of the points along the transect. Data were recorded in 2010 and 2011, except that IVEE transect 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 were recorded in 2024.
Grassland Vegetation Line-Intercept Transects at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico
In 1989, line-intercept transects were installed to evaluate temporal and spatial dynamics across vegetation transition zones. Currently, a 400m transect is sampled at a grassland site (Deep Well) which is dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (black grama) and, near the southern end of the transect, B. gracilis (blue grama). A second grassland site (Five Points), dominated by B. eriopoda and, to the south, Larrea tridentata (creosote), is also sampled. Both sites are sampled twice a year, in May/June and September/October, and measurements are taken at a one-centimeter resolution. The biannual sampling protocol detects potential responses in both cool and warm season plants as well as pre- and post-monsoon dynamics. Several transects have been discontinued and data archived within SEV200.
Sediment elevation transects for the Seagrass Recovery Experiment, South Bay, VA 2022
To understand intra-meadow stability, the Seagrass Recovery Experiment was designed to ask 1) is recovery faster at sites with less thermal stress owing to greater exchange with cooler oceanic water at the meadow edge? 2) what is the shape of recovery? and 3) what are the recovery mechanisms? To conduct this experiment, aboveground seagrass biomass was removed from 28.3 m2 plots within the interior and along an edge of a restored seagrass meadow in South Bay, VA. Sites 1-3 correspond to the meadow interior while sites 4-6 correspond to the northern meadow edge. Each site was comprised of a control (i.e., C) where no seagrass was disturbed and a treatment (i.e., T) where seagrass was removed (n = 12 sites total, e.g., 1C, 1T, 2C...). A nor'easter storm moved through the area in early May 2022 producing 59% and 48% of the year's total Gale and Near Gale force winds. After the storm passed, depressions were noticed within the edge treatment sites. To quantify the depression depths a survey of the sediment surface depth was coordinated among all sites in October 2022. Results provide evidence that the edge treatment sites were depressed by 9.4-10.4 cm relative to outside of the treatment plots.
Relative density variations of common vole population based on index transect, Septfontaines - Le Souillot, France (1990-2000)
<p>Transects were walked from village to village along a transect line. Common vole (<em>Microtus arvalis</em>) activity indices were recorded in every ten pace interval from October 1990 to April 2000. In 2014, the geographical coordinates of each interval has been computed by spatial interpolation based on georeferenced maps. Therefore, users must be aware that individual locations of intervals are unprecise, but not the general bearing of the transect in the landscape and interval succession. Dust geochemistry and lead isotopes along an urban-rural transect in central Ohio, 2021
This data package contains geochemical concentrations and stable lead isotope ratios for dust samples collected along an urban-rural land use gradient in central Ohio during 2021. The purpose of the study was to characterize the geochemical and isotopic signatures of dust in relation to different land uses, to see how much dust varies across land use and by season. At four sites along an urban-rural transect in central Ohio, we collected weekly bulk deposition samples and analyzed the geochemical composition (47 elements including major elements, trace metals, and rare earth elements) and stable lead isotopes (208Pb, 207Pb, 206Pb, and 204Pb) of the particulate matter. This study demonstrates the tight connection between land use and anthropogenic dust composition in a region where land use is changing rapidly as development encroaches into farmland. This dataset is complete and will not be updated.
Air mass back-trajectory modeling output along an urban-rural transect in central Ohio, 2021
This data package contains modeled air parcel back-trajectories generated using the Stochastic Time-Inverted Lagrangian Transport model (STILT) via the R interface. The purpose of the study was to characterize the geochemical and isotopic signatures of dust in relation to different land uses, and to connect the geochemistry of deposited dust to air mass trajectories. Back-trajectories are three-dimensional paths of air parcels from a receptor site (the dust collection site) backwards in time and space for the duration of the tracking interval, calculated iteratively using wind fields from high-resolution gridded meteorological data. To calculate a probability of potential pathways, rather than a single back-trajectory, STILT introduces small random perturbations into the wind fields during each time step. For four sites along an urban-rural transect in central Ohio for June-July 2021, we generated weekly footprints of potential sources for the dust deposited at each site. These back-trajectories can be paired with geochemical data to establish a connection between land use and anthropogenic dust composition. This dataset is complete and will not be updated.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Records of bird species based on line transect sampling, giving perpendicular distance of sighting from the transect line on 16 separate transects. Bird surveys were conducted 2-4 times per year in January, April, June, and October for a 29-year period from 1981 to 2009. Transects were designed to determine bird communities and population numbers associated with tallgrass prairie habitats with different experimental treatments (fire frequency, grazed by bison vs. ungrazed), riparian habitats on forest edge, and gallery forests dominated by oak woodland.
Temporal transect of moss-associated N2 fixation rates in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Toolik
This is a dataset coving multiple moss species (Hylocomium splendens, Ptilium crista-castrensis, Pleurozium schreberi, Sphagnum sp., others) and their associated d15N following incubation with 15N2 in June, July, and August over the course of one growing season in 2017. Three sites at each location (Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Toolik Field Station) were sampled. We measured rates of nitrogen fixation using 15N2 incubations in a common garden close to the sites of collection.
Permafrost thaw monitoring in Denali National Park: Thermokarst transect surveys 2013-2023
This dataset contains variables measured at thawed, ice-rich permafrost sites in Denali National Park and Preserve. Transects were established at seven sites in the Toklat river basin in 2013 to understand how ecosystem characteristics changed following permafrost thaw. Transects were co-located with known thaw subsidence (thermokarst) or erosional features and run from outside (relatively undisturbed tundra) through the feature. These data represent a long-term monitoring project of permafrost and ecosystem characteristics, surveyed initially in 2013 and re-surveyed 10 years later in 2023.
Count data of air-breathing fauna from visual transect surveys including water temperature, time, sea and weather conditions in Shark Bay Marine Park, Western Australia from February 2008 to July 2014
This dataset provides information on the relative abundances of air breathing fauna (dugongs, dolphins, sea snakes, marine birds, and sea turtles) in the study area of the Eastern Gulf of Shark Bay, Western Australia. The dataset comprises transects that quantify animal abundances in three microhabitats (shallow seagrass banks, seagrass bank edges, and deep sandy channels). These microhabitats vary in their food supply as well as their potential to facilitate or inhibit detection and escape from predators, mainly the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). As a result these data have been used to examine risk-specific habitat use behaviors of these fauna, in addition to general abundance estimates.
Spring 2001 CTD profiles for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Sapelo River transect
Three hydrographic surveys were performed between May 28 and June 5, 2001, along a transect from Sapelo Sound up the Sapelo River to Eulonia, Georgia (Sapelo River Transect, GCE-SP). Vertical CTD profiles were collected at approximately 3km intervals from 0km to 32km during various tidal regimes. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.
