Survival and growth of Symphonia seedlings in a reciprocal transplantation experiment
<p>Trees are characterised by the large number of seeds they produce. Although most of those seeds will never germinate, plenty will. Of those which germinate, many die young, and eventually only a minute fraction will grow to adult stage and reproduce. Is this just a random process? Do variations in germination and survival at very young stages rely on variations in adaptations to microgeographic heterogeneity? and do these processes matter at all in determining tree species distribution and abundance?</p> <p>We have studied these questions with the Neotropical <i>Symphonia</i> tree species. In the Guiana shield, <i>Symphonia</i> are represented by at least two sympatric taxa or ecotypes, <i>Symphonia globulifera</i> found almost exclusively in bottomlands, and a yet undescribed more generalist taxon/ecotype, <i>Symphonia sp1</i>. A reciprocal transplantation experiment (510 seeds, 16 conditions) was set up and followed over the course of 6 years to evaluate the survival and performance of individuals from different ecotypes and provenances.</p> <p>Germination, survival, growth, and herbivory showed signs of local adaptation, with some combinations of ecotypes and provenances growing faster and surviving better in their own habitat or provenance region. <i>S. globulifera</i> was strongly penalised when planted outside its home habitat but showed the fastest growth rates when planted in its home habitat, suggesting it's a specialist of a high-risk high-gain strategy. Conversely, <i>S. sp1</i> behaved as a generalist, performing well in a variety of environments. </p> <p>The differential performance of seeds and seedlings in the different habitats matches the known distribution of both ecotypes, indicating that environmental filtering at the very early stages can be a key determinant of tree species distributions, even at the microgeographic level and among very closely related taxa. Furthermore, such differential performance also contributes to explain, in part, the maintenance of the different <i>Symphonia</i> ecotypes living in intimate sympatry despite occasional gene flow.</p>

Tree regeneration after fire: Aspen removal experiment, biomass of 2002 growth of transplanted seedlings
This research was intended to address the general question of whether asexual stem regeneration of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) reduces rates of establishment and growth of potential invading conifer species during the initial years following fire. Interactions between aspen and conifers were studied under natural conditions in a burned aspen stand with a high potential for aspen re-sprouting. The study contributes to our understanding of whether competitive interactions between tree seedlings are likely to help maintain deciduous stands across disturbance cycles by reducing the potential for successful conifer establishment. Data are biomass (g dry weight) of current year growth (2002, leaves + stems) of transplanted seedlings. Values are averages of up to 3 seedlings per plot (fewer where seedlings died).
Data from: Are species' range limits simply niche limits writ large? A review of transplant experiments beyond the range
Many species' range limits (RL) occur across continuous environmental gradients without obvious barriers imposing them. Such RL are expected to reflect niche limits (NL) and thus to occur where populations cease to be self-sustaining. Transplant experiments comparing fitness within and beyond species' ranges can test this hypothesis, but interpretive power depends strongly on experimental design. We first identify often overlooked aspects of transplant design that are critical to establishing the causes of RL, especially incorporating transplant sites at, and source populations from, the range edge. We then conduct a meta-analysis of published beyond-range transplant experiments ( tests). Most tests (75%) found that performance declined beyond the range, with the strongest declines detected when the measure of performance was lifetime fitness (83%), suggesting that RL commonly involve niche constraints (declining habitat quality). However, only 46% supported range limits occurring at NL; 26% (mostly geographic RL) fell short of NL with self-sustaining transplants beyond the range, and 23% (all elevational RL) exceeded NL with range-edge populations acting as demographic sinks. These data suggest an important but divergent role for dispersal, which may commonly constrain geographic distributions while extending elevational limits. Meta-analysis results also supported the importance of biotic interactions at RL, particularly the long-held assertion of their role in causing low-elevation and equatorial limits.
Data for: Transplant experiments demonstrate that larger brains are favored in high competition environments in Trinidadian killifish
<p><span>The extent to which the evolution of a larger brain is adaptive remains controversial. Trinidadian killifish (<em>Anablepsoides hartii</em>) are found in sites that differ in predation intensity; fish that experience decreased predation and increased intraspecific competition exhibit larger brains. We evaluated the connection between brain size and fitness (survival and growth) when killifish are found in their native habitats and when fish are transplanted from sites with predators to high-competition sites that lack predators. Selection for a larger brain was absent within locally adapted populations. Conversely, there was a strong positive relationship between brain size and growth in transplanted but not resident fish in high-competition environments. We also observed significantly larger brain sizes in the transplanted fish that were recaptured at the end of the experiment versus those that were not. Our results provide experimental support that larger brains increase fitness and are favored in high-competition environments.<br><br></span></p>
Calcareous and siliceous species on calcareous and siliceous soils over four years of reciprocal transplant experiments
<p>This dataset is a collection of data from 4-year experiments conducted in the Gironde department in southwestern France. It contains "Block, Year, Soil type, neighboring, Species and Origin" as explanatory categorical variables and "Target survival" as binomial response variable.</p> <p>These data were analyzed in order to characterize and assess how the effect of species stress tolerance and community competitive effects lead to differences in species composition between calcareous and siliceous plant communities.</p> <p>The year, rock and origin variables and their interactions as fixed factors, were used to assess the effect of abiotic conditions of the soil type and year quality, on the survival of target species from calcareous and siliceous soils growing without neighbors, using a general linear mixed-effects model with a logit link function for binomial distribution.</p> <p>The survival with and without neighbours was also used to calculate two indices to characterize the intensity (RII) and the importance (Iimp) of plant-plant interactions. RII and Iimp were then analyzed separately using linear mixed-effects models with "Year quality", "Soil type", "Origin" and their interactions as fixed factors and "Year nested within Blocks" as a random factor.</p> <p>All data were stored using Microsoft Excel and all the statistical analyses were done using R software (R Core Team 2016).</p>
