Processed multibeam bathymetry data collected around the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal, onboard the NEREIDE research vessel.

<p>A Kongsberg EM 2040 C multibeam echo sounder transducer installed on the scientific vessel NEREIDE, was used to collect multibeam bathymetry data during graduation activities and equipment testing. This particular dataset was collected around the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal during March, 2020.</p> <p>The range of opening angles of the EM 2040 C multibeam varies between 60 and 65 degrees. The positioning system used was supported by the Real Time Kinematic (RTK) technique with the transmission of differential data in Ultra High Frequency (UHF) mode.</p> <p>The data is calibrated and corrected for the surface sound velocity. The processing of hydrographic data was performed using specific algorithms for hydrography - Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetric Estimator (CUBE). In its processing, data was referenced to the hydrographic Zero of Portugal and projected in the WGS84-UTM29N coordinate system.</p>

Data from: Diabetes, brain infarcts, cognition and small vessels in the Canadian alliance for healthy hearts and minds study

<p><b>Background:  </b>Diabetes is a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease and cognitive impairment. The anatomical basis for this is uncertain.</p> <p><span><b>Methods: </b>The Canadian Alliance for Healthy Hearts and Minds (CAHHM) collected brain and carotid magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and two cognitive tests (DSST and MoCA) in a cross-sectional sample of men and women. Brain MRIs identified brain infarcts (BI), lacunar BI, high white matter hyperintensity (WMH), vascular brain injury (VBI - BI or high WMH) and small vessel VBI (lacunar BI or high WMH). Carotid MRIs estimated carotid wall volume, a measure of subclinical atherosclerosis. Cognitive scores were standardized to each site's mean score, and cognitive impairment was identified by one or both test scores ≤ 1 standard deviation below the site's mean score on that test.    </span></p> <p><span><b>Results: </b>The 7733 participants included 495 (6.4%) with diabetes, of whom 388 were taking diabetes drugs. After age and sex adjustment, diabetes was independently associated with BI (OR 1.53, 95%CI 1.05, 2.24), VBI (OR 1.64, 95%CI 1.26, 2.13), small vessel VBI (OR 1.67, 95%CI 1.28, 2.19) and cognitive impairment (OR 1.47, 95%CI 1.20, 1.80). The association between diabetes and small vessel VBI persisted after adjustment for cerebrovascular disease risk factors and non-lacunar infarcts (OR 1.52, 95%CI 1.15, 2.01), and the association with cognitive impairment persisted after adjustment for small vessel VBI (OR 1.27, 95%CI 1.03, 1.56).  </span></p> <p><span><b>Conclusion:</b> Small vessel disease characterizes much of the relationship between diabetes and VBI. However, additional factors are required to disentangle the relationship between diabetes and cognitive impairment. </span></p>

Data from: Xylem vessel traits predict the leaf phenology of native and non-native understory species of temperate deciduous forests

Non-native understorey woody species have been shown to extend leaf display and inhabit vacant phenological niches in early spring and late autumn when growing with native counterparts in temperate deciduous forests across the world. Despite the potential competitive advantages, extended leaf duration also subjects non-native species to possible hydraulic risks associated with maintaining leaves during periods of increased frost probability. It remains unclear how non-native species are able to maintain xylem function within this context. Leaf phenology in temperate deciduous trees has been shown to be a function of xylem anatomy, with earlier bud break associated with smaller xylem vessels due to the presumed resistance of smaller vessels to freezing-induced cavitation. We examined relationships between leaf phenology and xylem vessel traits across 82 native and non-native understorey deciduous woody species common to eastern U.S. deciduous forests. We hypothesized that non-native species possess xylem vessel traits associated with maximum hydraulic safety during frost-prone spring and autumn leaf display without compromising rapid growth rate. Larger metaxylem vessels in non-native species were associated with both faster spring growth and delayed autumn leaf fall compared to native species. Non-native species also had smaller latewood vessel diameter, latewood vessel area percentage and a higher proportion of solitary vessels in the entire secondary xylem cross section compared to natives, potentially increasing their resistance to freezing- and/or drought-induced cavitation in autumn, thus allowing for delayed autumn leaf fall. Native and non-native species exhibited similar dates of spring bud break and leaf emergence, consistent with similar xylem vessel size and vessel area percentage within metaxylem and earlywood. Within both groups, species with earlier bud and leaf emergence had a higher total percentage of vessel area within metaxylem and earlywood. This suggests understorey species need sufficient water to support their early spring growth at the risk of freezing-induced cavitation. Our study suggests xylem vessel properties, along with cross-sectional spatial xylem vessel distribution, reflect the capacity of non-native plants to thrive in a new environment and deepen our understanding of the physiological mechanisms of successful invasions of non-native understorey woody plant species.

Data from: Vascular patterns in the heads of crocodilians: blood vessels and sites of thermal exchange

Extant crocodilians are a highly apomorphic archosaur clade that is endothermic, yet often achieve large body sizes that can be subject to higher heat loads. Therefore, the anatomical and physiological roles that blood vessels play in crocodilian thermoregulation need further investigation to better understand how crocodilians establish and maintain cephalic temperatures and regulate neurosensory tissue temperatures during basking and normal activities. The cephalic vascular anatomy of extant crocodilians, particularly American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) was investigated using a differential-contrast, dual-vascular injection technique and high resolution X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT). Blood vessels were digitally isolated to create representations of vascular pathways. The specimens were then dissected to confirm CT results. Sites of thermal exchange, consisting of the oral, nasal, and orbital regions, were given special attention due to their role in evaporative cooling and cephalic thermoregulation in other diapsids. Blood vessels to and from sites of thermal exchange were studied to detect conserved vascular patterns and to assess their ability to deliver cooled blood to neurosensory tissues. Within the orbital region, both the arteries and veins demonstrated consistent branching patterns, with the supraorbital, infraorbital, and ophthalmotemporal vessels supplying and draining the orbit. The venous drainage of the orbital region showed connections to the dural sinuses via the orbital veins and cavernous sinus. The palatal region demonstrated a vast plexus that comprised both arteries and veins. The most direct route of venous drainage of the palatal plexus was through the palatomaxillary veins, essentially bypassing neurosensory tissues. Anastomotic connections with the nasal region, however, may provide an alternative route for palatal venous blood to reach neurosensory tissues. The nasal region in crocodilians is probably the most prominent site of thermal exchange, as it offers a substantial surface area and is completely surrounded by blood vessels. The venous drainage routes from the nasal region offer routes directly to the dural venous sinuses and the orbit, offering evidence of the potential to directly affect neurosensory tissue temperatures. The evolutionary history of crocodilians is complex, with large-bodied, terrestrial, and possibly endothermic taxa that may have had to deal with thermal loads that likely provided the anatomical building-blocks for such an extensive vascularization of sites of thermal exchange. A clear understanding of the physiological abilities and the role of blood vessels in the thermoregulation of crocodilians neurosensory tissues is not available but vascular anatomical patterns of crocodilian sites of thermal exchange indicate possible physiological abilities that may be more sophisticated than in other extant diapsids.

Data from: Vascular patterns in iguanas and other squamates: blood vessels and sites of thermal exchange

Squamates use the circulatory system to regulate body and head temperatures during both heating and cooling. The flexibility of this system, which possibly exceeds that of endotherms, offers a number of physiological mechanisms to gain or retain heat (e.g., increase peripheral blood flow and heart rate, cooling the head to prolong basking time for the body) as well as to shed heat (modulate peripheral blood flow, expose sites of thermal exchange). Squamates also have the ability to establish and maintain the same head-to-body temperature differential that birds, crocodilians, and mammals demonstrate, but without a discrete rete or other vascular physiological device. Squamates offer important anatomical and phylogenetic evidence for the inference of the blood vessels of dinosaurs and other extinct archosaurs in that they shed light on the basal diapsid condition. Given this basal positioning, squamates likewise inform and constrain the range of physiological thermoregulatory mechanisms that may have been found in Dinosauria. Unfortunately, the literature on squamate vascular anatomy is limited. Cephalic vascular anatomy of green iguanas (Iguana iguana) was investigated using a differential-contrast, dual-vascular injection (DCDVI) technique and high-resolution X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT). Blood vessels were digitally segmented to create a surface representation of vascular pathways. Known sites of thermal exchange, consisting of the oral, nasal, and orbital regions, were given special attention due to their role in brain and cephalic thermoregulation. Blood vessels to and from sites of thermal exchange were investigated to detect conserved vascular patterns and to assess their ability to deliver cooled blood to the dural venous sinuses. Arteries within sites of thermal exchange were found to deliver blood directly and through collateral pathways. The venous drainage was found to have multiple pathways that could influence neurosensory tissue temperature, as well as pathways that would bypass neurosensory tissues. The orbital region houses a large venous sinus that receives cooled blood from the nasal region. Blood vessels from the nasal region and orbital sinus show anastomotic connections to the dural sinus system, allowing for the direct modulation of brain temperatures. The generality of the vascular patterns discovered in iguanas were assessed by firsthand comparison with other squamates taxa (e.g., via dissection and osteological study) as well as the literature. Similar to extant archosaurs, iguanas and other squamates have highly vascularized sites of thermal exchange that likely support physiological thermoregulation that "fine tunes" temperatures attained through behavioral thermoregulation.

Data from: Blood-brain barrier impairment and hypoperfusion are linked in cerebral small vessel disease

Objective: To investigate the link between BBB permeability and CBF and the relation with white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD). Methods: Twenty-seven patients with cSVD received dynamic susceptibility contrast and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI to determine CBF and BBB permeability (expressed as leakage rate and volume), respectively. Structural MR images were segmented into normal appearing white matter (NAWM) and WMHs, for which a perilesional zone was defined. In these regions, we investigated the BBB permeability, CBF, and their relation using Pearson correlation r. Results: We found a decrease in CBF of 2.2 mL/min/100g(p&lt;0.01) and an increase in leakage volume of 0.7%(p&lt;0.01) per mm closer to the WMHs in the perilesional zones. Lower CBF values correlated with higher leakage measures in the NAWM and WMHs (-0.53

Data from: Quantification and statistical analysis methods for vessel wall components from stained images with Masson's trichrome

Purpose: To develop a digital image processing method to quantify structural components (smooth muscle fibers and extracellular matrix) in the vessel wall stained with Masson's trichrome, and a statistical method suitable for small sample sizes to analyze the results previously obtained. Methods: The quantification method comprises two stages. The pre-processing stage improves tissue image appearance and the vessel wall area is delimited. In the feature extraction stage, the vessel wall components are segmented by grouping pixels with a similar color. The area of each component is calculated by normalizing the number of pixels of each group by the vessel wall area. Statistical analyses are implemented by permutation tests, based on resampling without replacement from the set of the observed data to obtain a sampling distribution of an estimator. The implementation can be parallelized on a multicore machine to reduce execution time. Results: The methods have been tested on 48 vessel wall samples of the internal saphenous vein stained with Masson's trichrome. The results show that the segmented areas are consistent with the perception of a team of doctors and demonstrate good correlation between the expert judgments and the measured parameters for evaluating vessel wall changes. Conclusion: The proposed methodology offers a powerful tool to quantify some components of the vessel wall. It is more objective, sensitive and accurate than the biochemical and qualitative methods traditionally used. The permutation tests are suitable statistical techniques to analyze the numerical measurements obtained when the underlying assumptions of the other statistical techniques are not met.

Data from: Association of venous outflow profiles and successful vessel reperfusion after thrombectomy

<p><b>Background and Purpose</b>: Robust arterial collaterals are associated with successful reperfusion after thrombectomy treatment of acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion (AIS-LVO). Excellent venous outflow (VO) reflects excellent tissue perfusion and collateral status in AIS-LVO patients.</p> <p><b>Objective</b>: To determine whether favorable VO profiles assessed on pre-treatment CT angiography (CTA) images correlate with successful vessel reperfusion after thrombectomy in AIS-LVO patients.</p> <p><b>Materials and Methods</b>: Multicenter retrospective cohort study of consecutive AIS-LVO patients treated by thrombectomy. Baseline CTA was used to assess collateral status (Tan scale) and <span>VO using the </span>cortical vein opacification score (COVES). Favorable VO was defined as COVES ≥3. Primary outcome was excellent vessel reperfusion status (modified Thrombolysis In Cerebral Infarction [TICI] 2c-3). Secondary outcome was good functional outcome defined as 0-2 on the Modified Ranking Scale (mRS) after 90 days.</p> <p><b>Results</b>: 565 patients met inclusion criteria. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that favorable VO (OR= 2.10 [95% CI 1.39-3.16]; p&lt;0.001) was associated with excellent vessel reperfusion during thrombectomy, regardless of good CTA collateral status (OR= 0.87 [95%CI 0.58-1.34]; p=0.48). A favorable VO profile (OR= 8.9 [95%CI 5.3-14.9]; p&lt;0.001) and excellent vessel reperfusion status (OR = 2.7 [95%CI 1.7-4.4]; p&lt;0.001) were independently associated with good functional outcome adjusted for age, sex, glucose, tPA administration, good CTA collateral status and presentation NIHSS.</p> <p><b>Conclusion</b>: A favorable VO profile is associated with reperfusion success and good functional outcomes in patients with AIS-LVO treated by endovascular thrombectomy.</p>
