Targeting fin whale conservation in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea: Insights on movements and behaviour from biologging and habitat modelling

<p>Biologging and habitat modelling are key tools supporting the development of conservation measures and mitigating the effects of anthropogenic pressures on marine species. Here, we analysed satellite telemetry data and foraging habitat preferences in relation to chlorophyll-a productivity fronts to understand the movements and behaviour of endangered Mediterranean fin whales (<em>Balaenoptera physalus)</em> during their spring-summer feeding aggregation in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea. Eleven individuals were equipped with Argos satellite transmitters across three years, with transmissions averaging 23.5 ± 11.3 days. Hidden Markov Models were used to identify foraging behaviour, revealing how individuals showed consistency in their use of seasonal core feeding grounds; this was supported by the distribution of potential foraging habitat. Importantly, tracked whales spent most of their time in areas with no explicit protected status within the study region. This highlights the need for enhanced time- and place-based conservation actions to mitigate the effects of anthropogenic impacts for this species, notably ship strike risk and noise disturbance in an area of exceptionally high maritime traffic levels. These findings strengthen the need to further assess critical habitats and Important Marine Mammal Areas that are crucial for focussed conservation, management, and mitigation efforts.</p>

Harmful Ostreopsis cf. ovata blooms could extend in time span with climate change in the Western Mediterranean Sea

<p>The data and R script provided are related to a study that aimed at simulating the abundance of <em>Ostreopsis cf. ovata</em> in the Western Mediterranean basin, under current and future climate conditions. We obtained <em>O. cf. ovata</em> abundance time series as part of long-term monitoring programs. We then statistically correct physical and biogeochemical reanalysis of the Mediterranean Sea to match in situ environmental conditions to use them as predictors of <em>O cf. ovata </em>cell abundance. Present and future climate simulations are also statistically corrected to fit the distribution of reanalysis. After calibrating and testing our niche model, we used it to identify the main environmental factors that explain <em>O. cf. ovata</em> abundance patterns and, in particular, the occurrence of large blooms in some regions.</p>

Data from: Primer sets evaluation and sampling method assessment for the monitoring of fish communities in the North-western part of the Mediterranean Sea through eDNA metabarcoding

<p>Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding appears to be a promising tool for surveying fish communities. However, the effectiveness of this method relies on primer set performance and on a robust sampling strategy. While some studies have evaluated the efficiency of several primers for fish detection, it has not yet been assessed <em>in situ </em>for the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, mainly surface waters were sampled and no filter porosity testing was performed. In this pilot study, our aim was to evaluate the ability of six primer sets, targeting 12S rRNA (AcMDB07; MiFish; Tele04) or 16S rRNA (Fish16S; Fish16SFD; Vert16S) loci, to detect fish species in the Mediterranean Sea using a metabarcoding approach. We also assessed the influence of sampling depth and filter pore size (0.45 µm <em>versus</em> 5 µm filters). To achieve this, we developed a novel sampling strategy allowing simultaneous surface and bottom filtration of large water volumes along on-site the same transect. We found that 16S rRNA primer sets enabled more fish taxa to be detected across each taxonomic level. The best combination was Fish16S/Vert16S/AcMDB07, which recovered 95% of the 97 fish species detected in our study. There were highly significant differences in species composition between surface and bottom samples. Filters of 0.45 µm led to the detection of significantly more fish species. Therefore, to maximize fish detection in the studied area, we recommend to filter both surface and bottom waters through 0.45 µm filters and to use a combination of these three primer sets.</p>

Datasets used for Western Mediterranean Dugesia phylotranscriptomic analyses

<p><span>The Mediterranean is one of the most biodiverse areas of the Paleartic region. Here, basing on large data sets of single copy orthologs obtained from transcriptomic data, we investigated the evolutionary history of the genus <em>Dugesia</em> in the Western Mediterranean area. The results corroborated that the complex paleogeological history of the region was an important driver of diversification for the genus, speciating as microplates and islands were forming. These processes led to the differentiation of three main biogeographic clades: Iberia-Apennines-Alps, Corsica-Sardinia, and Iberia-Africa. The internal relationships of these major clades were analysed with several representative samples per species. The use of large data sets regarding the number of <em>loci</em> and samples, as well as state-of-the-art phylogenomic inference methods allowed us to answer different unresolved questions about the evolution of particular groups, such as the diversification path of <em>D. subtentaculata</em> in the Iberian Peninsula and its colonization of Africa. Additionally, our results support the differentiation of <em>D. benazzii</em> in two lineages which could represent two species. Finally, we analysed here for the first time a comprehensive number of samples from several asexual Iberian populations whose assignment at the species level has been an enigma through the years. The phylogenies obtained with different inference methods showed a branching topology of asexual individuals at the base of sexual clades. We hypothesize that this unexpected topology is related to long-term asexuality. This work represents the first phylotranscriptomic analysis of Tricladida, laying the first stone of the genomic era in phylogenetic studies on this taxonomic group.</span></p>

<p>Manually labelled dataset of bird recordings from the species of interest inhabiting in the wetlands of the &quot;Aiguamolls del Empord&agrave;&quot; natural park in Girona, Spain.
