RustMapper: White Pine Blister Rust Risk in the Western United States, 1980-2023

White pine blister rust (WPBR) is a highly destructive disease threatening high-elevation five-needle white pines across North America. To better understand risk patterns, we analyzed data from independent studies conducted across the western U.S. between 1995 and 2020. Using this data, we assessed WPBR risk for high-elevation five-needle pine species (High-5) from 1980 to 2023, integrating the results into the adaptive management tool "RustMapper." These projections estimate the annual probability of WPBR occurrence, providing valuable insights for monitoring and management. Risk ranges from 0 to 1, and values closer to 1 indicate a higher likelihood of disease occurrence based on conditions.

Greenhouse gas fluxes and concentrations and associated habitat data in western Dane County, Wisconsin, USA, streams during the 2018 growing season

Streams are often sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), particularly in agricultural regions where sediment and organic matter inputs can be substantial. Floods are occurring more often and more intensely in southern Wisconsin, one such agricultural region, due to climate change and few studies have investigated how floods impact stream CO2 and CH4 fluxes and concentrations. I compared concentrations and fluxes of CO2 and CH4 with greater than 30 variables representing in-stream and watershed attributes at 10 sites in mixed agricultural and suburban locations in southern Wisconsin. Sampling was conducted 10 times at each site during the growing season (May-November) in 2018

This dataset provides information on the relative abundances of air breathing fauna (dugongs, dolphins, sea snakes, marine birds, and sea turtles) in the study area of the Eastern Gulf of Shark Bay, Western Australia. The dataset comprises transects that quantify animal abundances in three microhabitats (shallow seagrass banks, seagrass bank edges, and deep sandy channels). These microhabitats vary in their food supply as well as their potential to facilitate or inhibit detection and escape from predators, mainly the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). As a result these data have been used to examine risk-specific habitat use behaviors of these fauna, in addition to general abundance estimates.

Data to explore circular manureshed management in beef supply chains of the United States and western Canada

Circular management of beef supply chains holds great promise for improving sustainability from grazing agroecosystem to dinner plate. In the United States and Canada, one approach to circularity entails transporting manure nutrients from cattle produced in feedlots back to the grazing agroecosystems where they originated to enrich haylands for further grazing cattle production. We provide data to assess this strategy centered around three grazing agroecosystems: Florida, New Mexico, and the provincial assemblage of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia. We describe four datasets that can be used to estimate the potential nutrient utilization of hay fed to grazing cattle in the three grazing agroecosystems and the magnitudes of feedlot manure nutrients available for transport back to them. We found that although biogeography and management differ among the three grazing agroecosystems, the hay allocated for grazing cattle represented approximately 65% of the total harvested hay produced per agroecosystem after accounting for harvest losses, and that on average all three areas exported about 450,000 cattle annually for feedlot, pasture, and slaughter to states across the US. Although we highlight only three grazingland settings, our approach relies on methods that could ultimately be scaled nationally and internationally, with applicability to other animal industries for which circular management is an aspiration for sustainability outcomes.

Chlorophyll and phaeopigments from water column samples, collected at selected depths aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 1991-2024.

Phytoplankton chlorophyll sampling was led by Smith from 1991-2002, and then by Vernet from 2003-2008. Schofield is the third, and current lead, beginning in 2009. Methods have been kept consistent as much as possible over the full time series and different Principal Investigators. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) is the principal photosynthetic pigment of phytoplankton, and is used as a proxy measurement for estimating phytoplankton biomass in water samples. Chl a concentrations reflect the distribution of active phytoplankton spatially and with depth in the water column and their changes over time. Phaeopigments are non-photosynthetic pigments that are degradation products of phytoplankton chlorophylls which form during and after phytoplankton blooms. Water samples are collected throughout the water column along the Western Antarctic Peninsula at regular LTER grid stations where CTD casts are preformed and in surface waters at underway stations, where CTD casts are not done, using the ship's flow-through seawater system. Chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations are determined by filtration, extraction, and fluorometric detection of samples. The primary source of error for phaeopigment measurement is Chlorophyll b. If high amounts of Chlorophyll b are present in the sample, phaeopigments may be overestimated.

Skin-blubber biopsy samples and associated demographic data collected from cetaceans encountered along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), 2010 – 2024

Baleen whale populations in the Southern Ocean are recovering after intense commercial whaling in the 20th century. Along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), this recovery is occurring in one of the planet's most rapidly changing marine ecosystems. Understanding how climate-driven changes influence the population dynamics of whales in this region is critical for understanding what conservation and management actions must be prioritized to maintain the structure and function of this marine ecosystem. To begin understanding the dynamics of whale recovery under continued environmental change, we need to study these whales' demography and population dynamics. As part of our annual sampling surveys for cetaceans along the WAP through the PAL LTER program, we actively collect remote non-lethal skin-blubber biopsy samples and have developed one of the most extensive tissue archives in the Southern Ocean. With these samples, we conduct a series of demographic and physiological measurements. Using the skin portion of the biopsy sample, we isolate nuclear and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to develop a DNA profile for each sample, including genetic sex, a microsatellite genotype, and a mtDNA haplotype. These profiles are used to compare sex ratios of the population, determine individual recaptures through genotype analysis, and better understand population mixing. Using the blubber portion of the biopsy sample, we isolate endocrine markers (e.g., progesterone and cortisol) to monitor population pregnancy rates and stress levels. This data represents some of the first non-lethal quantitative observations of the demography and population dynamics of recovering whale populations in the Antarctic and provides a critical reference point for future work as the Antarctic climate continues to change and populations continue to recover from whaling.

Larval euphausiids collected using a 1 x 1 m square frame net with 333-μm mesh aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 1993-2013

Euphausiids (krill) are abundant along the Western Antarctic Peninsula where they have important impacts on the marine ecosystem and biogeochemical cycling. Euphausiids develop through a series of morphologically distinct larval stages within the first year of their life cycle. The calyptopis stages are followed by the furcilia stages before individuals recruit to the post-larval population. Larvae collected during Janury were most likely spawned during the preceding weeks or months of Antarctic spring/summer. Euphausia superba and Thysanoessa macrura are the most abundant euphausiid species along the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Euphausia crystallorophias, Euphausia frigida, and Euphausia triacantha are present but less abundant in the region. Samples were collected with a 1 x 1 m square frame net with 333-μm mesh towed obliquely to a depth of typically 300 m. Density of total calyptopis and furcilia larvae (all species combined) was determined for a subset of samples collected on the annual Palmer LTER cruises to cover the latitudinal and cross-shelf gradients of the study region. Larval euphausiid abundance varies spatially as spawning output is not homogeneous across the region. Larval euphausiid abundance also varies year-to-year due to changes in population demographics and environmental conditions.

Water column primary production from inorganic carbon uptake for 24h at simulated in situ (SIS) light levels in deck incubators, collected aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 1995 – 2023.

Primary Production experiments were led by Vernet from 1995-2008. Schofield is the current lead, beginning in 2009. Methods have been kept consistent as much as possible over the full time series and different Principal Investigators. Primary production is the uptake of inorganic carbon and assimilation of it into organic matter by phytoplankton. Primary production rates, expressed as mgC per m3 per day were measured by the uptake of radioactive (14C) sodium bicarbonate. Water samples are collected throughout the water column at stations along the Western Antarctica Peninsula at regular PAL-LTER grid stations. Water is put into borosilicate bottles, inoculated with 1 uCi of NaH14CO3 per bottle, and incubated in an outdoor deck incubator. The incubator is plumbed to the ship sea water system to maintain ambient seawater temperature and bottles are screened to in situ light levels. The uptake of 14C-bicarbonate by the phytoplankton was measured in a scintillation counter after a 24-hour incubation period. Data is unavailable for the LMG16-01 cruise due to measurement issues. Data is temporarily unavailable for the LMG20-01 cruise. Primary production experiments were not conducted during the 2022 (NBP21-13) nor 2024 (LMG24-01) cruises. There was no cruise in the austral summer of 2021.

Photosynthetic pigments of water column samples and analyzed with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), collected aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises off the coast of the Western Antarctica Peninsula, 1991-2024.

Phytoplankton pigment sampling was led by Prezelin from 1991-1994, and then by Vernet from 1995-2008. Schofield is the third, and current lead, beginning in 2009. Methods have been kept consistent as much as possible over the full time series and different Principal Investigators. Phytoplankton have a suite of accessory pigments in addition to Chlorophyll a, including other Chlorophyll's (e.g. Chlorophyll b), Xanthophylls, and Carotenes. These accessory pigments can be used as chemotaxonomic markers to assess the composition and distribution of the phytoplankton community. For example, Fucoxanthin is a marker pigment of Diatoms, whereas Alloxanthin is a marker pigment of Cryptophytes. Accessory pigments also assist in photoacclimation and photoprotective processes. Water samples are collected throughout the water column along the Western Antarctic Peninsula at regular LTER grid stations where CTD casts are preformed and in surface waters at underway stations, where CTD casts are not done, using the ship's flow-through seawater system. Water samples are filtered onto GF/F filters, and filters kept frozen at -80C until analysis. HPLC analysis is completed following Wright et al (1991). Following the guidelines set by NASA SeaHARRE, we use an internal standard and replicate injects on the HPLC to track recovery and replicability of the pigment extraction methods and the HPLC. Data is unavailable for the LMG10-01 cruise due to instrumentation problems and for the LMG12-01 cruise due to a freezer failure which resulted in the loss of samples. There is no data for 2021 because there was no LTER cruise.

Dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity of discrete water column samples, collected aboard Palmer LTER annual cruises of the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 1993 - 2019.

Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC or total CO2 – TCO2) and total alkalinity (TALK) are two of the four parameters defining the carbonate system in seawater. DIC is composed of dissolved CO2 gas, which dissociates into carbonate, 〖CO〗_3^(2-), and bicarbonate, 〖HCO〗_3^- in seawater. About 90% of the DIC is in the form of bicarbonate, ~10% is carbonate, and ~1% is CO2. The dissociation of CO2 dissolved in seawater into carbonate and bicarbonate gives seawater its great capacity to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Alkalinity (also known as “buffer capacity”) is a measure of the capacity of water to neutralize acids. Alkalinity is a complex product of the concentrations of (in decreasing order of importance) the DIC components, borate, hydroxide, phosphate, silicate and dissolved ammonium. Ocean biology regulates the alkalinity through the uptake and release of the DIC and the macronutrients N, P and Si. We measure surface DIC and ALK to understand the exchange of CO2 across the air-sea interface in our study area. With DIC and dissolved CO2, we can also derive estimates of ocean pH and thus monitor the extent and evolution of ocean acidification. Wildfires drive multi-year water quality degradation over the western U.S.

<p>Information on the 245 burned basins, 293 unburned basins, and 356 associated fires from across the U.S. West which were used in statistical analyses of post-wildfire water quality response. Included are physiographic characteristics, as well as ESRI Shapefile polygons representing delineations for each basin and fire. Additionally, daily carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment, and turbidity data sampled from the basins' outlets are provided from 1974-2022. R coding scripts used in data processing and modeling also included, as well as data directly used in generating manuscript and "Supplementary Information" plots.</p> <p>Water quality data used to create this dataset are from the Water Quality Portal and wildfire burn perimeters are from the Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity database.</p>

<p><em>MH_ANTWERPEN - Western marsh harriers (Circus aeruginosus, Accipitridae) breeding near Antwerp (Belgium)</em> is a bird tracking dataset published by the <a href="https://www.inbo.be/en">Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO)</a>. It contains animal tracking data collected by the LifeWatch GPS tracking network for large birds (<a href="http://lifewatch.be/en/gps-tracking-network-large-birds">http://lifewatch.be/en/gps-tracking-network-large-birds</a>) for the project/study <strong>MH_ANTWERPEN</strong>, using trackers developed by the University of Amsterdam Bird Tracking System (UvA-BiTS, <a href="http://www.uva-bits.nl">http://www.uva-bits.nl</a>). The study was operational from 2018 until 2022. In total 3 individuals of western marsh harriers (<em>Circus aeruginosus</em>) and 1 common buzzard (<em>Buteo buteo</em>) have been tagged in their breeding area near the city of Antwerp (Belgium), mainly to study their habitat use and migration behaviour. Data are periodically uploaded from the UvA-BiTS database to Movebank and from there archived on Zenodo (see <a href="https://github.com/inbo/bird-tracking">https://github.com/inbo/bird-tracking</a>). No new data are expected.</p> <p>See Milotic et al.
