Hunting Down White Dwarf--Main Sequence Binaries Using Multi-Wavelength Observations

<p>Identification of white dwarfs (WD) with main-sequence (MS) companions and characterization of their properties can put important constraints on our understanding of binary stellar evolution and guide the theoretical predictions for a wide range of interesting transient events relevant for, e.g., Rubin Observatory (LSST), ZTF, and LISA. In this study, we combine ultraviolet (UV) and optical color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to identify unresolved WD--MS binaries. In particular, we combine high-precision astrometric and photometric data in the optical from \gaia\ -DR3 and UV data from GALEX GR6/7 to identify 93 WD--MS candidates within 100 pc. Of these, 80 are newly identified. Using the Virtual Observatory SED Analyzer (VOSA) we fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of all our candidates and derive stellar parameters, such as effective temperature, bolometric luminosity, and radius for both companions. We find that our identification method helps identify hotter and smaller WD companions (majority with ≥ 10,000 K and ≤ 0.02 R_Sun) relative to the WDs identified by past surveys. We infer that these WDs are relatively more massive (median ~0.76 M_Sun). We find that most of the MS companions in our binaries are of the K and M spectral types.&nbsp;</p>

Birth cluster simulations of planetary systems with multiple super-Earths: initial conditions for white dwarf pollution drivers

<p>We provide the output parameters from our planetary system simulations around white dwarf main-sequence progenitors (1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 solar mass stars) embedded in a birth star cluster containing 8,000 stars. The data can serve the community as initial conditions for subsequent evolution simulations, e.g. to further investigate the role of eccentric planets in the pollution of white dwarfs. The planetary systems, consisting solely of super-Earths with 0.01 Jovian masses, were started in three different orbital configurations. The 3P model contains 3 planets with initial semimajor axes between 2.00 and 18.63 AU. We also simulated two 7-planet system models with different orbital spacing. The 7PC model represents a compact planetary system with 7 planets between 2.00 and 18.63 AU. The 7PW model represents a wide planetary system with 7 planets between 2.00 and 56.87 AU. The three planetary system models were distributed around 193 stars with 1.5 solar masses, around 114 stars with 2.0 solar masses and around 101 stars with 2.5 solar masses, and numerically integrated for 100 Myr considering the gravitational forces from the neighbouring stars in the star cluster.</p> <p>See the publication Stock et al. The region where the gravitational potential is softened around the neutron star is outlined by a black-dashed line.<br> The different videos show the following magnitudes: the&nbsp;ratio between the magnetic pressure and gas pressure (beta), the density, the entropy, the absolute value of the magnetic field, the radial velocity with respect to the neutron-star and the temperature.</p> <p>For every magnitude there are two videos (_01rsol and _003rsol) showing them in a box of 0.1 and 0.03 solar radii respectively.</p>
