Morphological measurements of coccoliths from surface samples of South China Sea
<p>The dataset compiles morphological measurements of coccoliths (<em>Gephyrocapsa</em> spp. and <em>Emiliania huxleyi</em>, >2µm) from surface samples of the South China Sea retrieved at different depths of the basin during the R/V Sonne cruises (SO-95); and of Gephyrocapsa spp. from one sample from the Western Equatorial Pacific (ODP 807A, -2H-2W, 57-59 cm) used in a dissolution experiment. The columns include station names, Longitude, Latitude, Depth (m), how much Calgon was added into sediment suspension (in the dissolution experiment), number of coccoliths measured per sample, mean ks shape factor, thickness, length, volume, mass, and standard deviation of mean ks/mean ks.</p>

<p>The enclosed dataset contains all of the raw data supporting the results presented in the paper titled: <strong>"Timing and provenance of volcanic fluxes around the Permian-Triassic Boundary Mass Extinction in South China: U-Pb zircon geochronology, volcanic ash geochemistry and mercury isotopes". </strong></p> <p>The Excel data file contains four data sheets as follows: </p> <p>1. Table S1: This sheet contains the U-Pb output table from ETRedux. The data sheet contains all the U and Pb isotopic data generated for the current study.</p> <p>2. Table S2: This excel sheet contains the geochemical compositions of analyzed volcanic ash beds as well as LOI-normalized major element compositions of these ashes.</p> <p>3. Table S3: This excel sheet contains the other geochemical and isotope data for all analyzed samples. This includes Hg concentration and isotope compositions, TOC data, as well as major and trace element concentrations and ratios.</p> <p>4. a final table containing the analyzed Hg isotope compositions for the utilized standard reference materials - ETH Fluka, UM-Almaden, NIST 1632D and MESS-3.</p>

The tetraradial or pentaradial fossil embryos and related hatched individuals from the early Cambrian Kuanchuanpu Formation are of great interest for understanding the early evolution of medusozoans. The phylogenetic and evolutionary significance of their external and internal characters (e.g. manubrium, tentacles, septa and claustra) is still controversial. Here we describe a new pentamerous medusozoan, <i>Hanagyroia orientalis</i> gen. et sp. nov., characterized by five well-developed perradial oral lips around a remarkably large manubrium, a conspicuous equatorial groove, and five short interradial pairs of extensile tentacles at the bell margin. Internally, five broad and stout interradial septa join horizontally to form the claustra. <i>Hanagyroia orientalis</i> lacks the frenula, apertural lappet and velarium seen in coeval microfossils and extant cubozoans. Although <i>H. orientalis</i> resembles extant coronate scyphozoans in its round medusa-like bell margin and equatorial groove, cladistic analysis suggests close affinity with cubozoans. <i>Hanagyroia</i> may represent an intermediate morphological type between scyphozoans and cubozoans. The well-developed oral lips and paired short strong tentacles of <i>Hanagyroia</i> suggest direct development.
Data from: Evolution of the conodont Diplognathodus ellesmerensis from D. benderi sp. nov. at the Bashkirian-Moscovian (Lower-Middle Pennsylvanian) boundary in South China
Conodont assemblages from the Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary interval in the Naqing section, South China have been studied in detail. A landmark-based geometric morphometric analysis to study the evolution of Diplognathodus ellesmerensis is presented. This analysis helped recognize a distinct new species, D. benderi sp. nov., which represents the direct evolutionary ancestor of D. ellesmerensis. The potential of using the First Appearance Datum (FAD) of D. ellesmerensis as the Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary marker is re-evaluated via biostratigraphic correlations of conodonts and other fossil groups between different palaeogeographic basins. The FAD of D. ellesmerensis from within the D. benderi sp. nov.–D. ellesmerensis lineage is an excellent marker to recognize a global Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary because of its global distribution, an abundance of supplementary marker species at similar stratigraphic levels, and the close stratigraphic proximity of the FAD to the traditional Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary, thus largely preserving the original concept for the base of the Moscovian Stage.
Data for the manuscript 'Biological response to the interaction of a mesoscale eddy and the river plume in the northern South China Sea'
<p>Satellite data includes daily sea-level anomaly from AVISO, daily surface chlorophyll a data from OC-CCI and sea surface salinity obtained from SMAP. Model simulated daily current, temperature, salinity, chlorophyll and nitrate concentration for three experiments (control, case1 and case2) from our coupled physical-biological model of the South China Sea . For chlorophyll and nitrate concentration, the dataset also includes the 16-day averaged budget terms along section S1. The modeled lagrangian particl tracking data is also avaiable. And all data and matlab scripts used to draw Fig. 1 to Fig. 10 are in Figure_data.rar file.</p>
