Elevated perceived stress in university students due to COVID-19 pandemic: Potential contributing factors in a propensity-score matched sample

<p><strong>Open Data and Open Materials of: </strong></p> <p><strong>Elevated perceived stress in university students due to COVID-19 pandemic: Potential contributing factors in a propensity-score matched sample.&nbsp;</strong></p> <p><strong><em>Scandinavian Journal Of Psychology</em>.</strong></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Objective</strong>: Onset of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID)-pandemic has increased students&rsquo; perceived burdens. The current study aimed to examine COVID-related changes and to identify potential factors that contribute to students&rsquo; stress.</p> <p><strong>Method</strong>: Adopting a cross-sectional cohort-study design, we examined perceived stress, depressive and anxiety symptoms with a specific focus on the role of study-related variables such as perceived study-related demands, study-related resources, academic procrastination, and stress enhancing beliefs. Two cohorts (<em>N</em><sub>pre-COVID</sub>=2175;<em>N</em><sub>COVID</sub>=959) were recruited at the same university and matched with regard to their propensity score (age, gender, semester).</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Compared to the pre-COVID cohort, university students in the COVID-cohort reported more perceived stress, more depressive and anxiety symptoms, more academic procrastination due to fear of failure, more stress-enhancing beliefs, more distress due to the housing situation, and more perceived study-related challenges (Cohen&rsquo;s <em>d</em>=.15&ndash;.45). A stepwise regression analysis identified depressive symptoms, procrastination due to fear of failure, general self-efficacy, increased study demands, perceived difficulties with to self-organised learning, distress due to housing, and stress enhancing beliefs as predictors of perceived stress in the COVID-cohort.</p> <p><strong>Discussion</strong>: Findings suggest that the switch to online-only education increased the study-related burden for students, primarily due to exams being replaced by a greater amount of regular coursework and imposing demands on self-organised learning. Possibly, stress enhancing beliefs and procrastination due to fear of failure might have been elevated due to less opportunity for social referencing and lack of felt social support by peer students.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: Experienced increased burden in students during the COVID pandemic was mostly accounted for by the lack of perceived individual resources rather than by the increase in objective study-related demands.</p>

HEartS Professional Survey: Charting the effects of COVID-19 on working patterns, income, and well-being among arts professionals in China (October 2020, August 2021)

<p>These data were collected using the HEartS Professional China survey from performing arts workers in China in October 2020 and August 2021. HEartS Professional China is an adaptation of the HEartS Professional surveys which were used in 2020-2021. All the surveys were designed as multi-strategy data collection tools with two main purposes: (1) to chart working patterns, income, sources of support, and indicators of mental and social well-being to identify trends in the effects of the lockdown at the time and (2) to explore the individual work and wellbeing experiences of performing arts professionals in their own words, to identify the subjective effects of lockdown in terms of challenges and opportunities. The survey covers six areas: 1) demographics; (2) information on illness or self-isolation related to COVID-19; (3) work profiles and income; (4) changes to work profiles and income as a result of the pandemic, as well as sources of support; (5) open-response questions about work and wellbeing experiences of lockdown including challenges and opportunities; and (6) validated measures of health, wellbeing, and social connectedness. The HEartS Professional surveys are adaptations of the HEartS Survey which charts the Health, Economic, and Social impacts of the ARTs (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.3r2280gdj">https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.3r2280gdj</a>).</p>

Financial, supplies, and human resource preparedness in management of COVID-19 pandemic among dental facilities in Nairobi County, Kenya

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic put a strain on healthcare facilities across the globe. Dental facilities pose the highest COVID-19 transmission risk categories due to the aerosol-generating procedures involved in dental practice. This study aimed to determine financial, supplies, and human resource preparedness in managing the COVID-19 pandemic among Nairobi County, Kenya dental facilities. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach among 183 dental facilities in Nairobi County. Data was collected using a KoboCollect questionnaire and analyzed using MS Excel and SPSS version 26. Dental facilities' readiness was assessed using the ReadyScore Criteria. Qualitative data was collected through one-on-one interviews with key informants and analyzed thematically. Readyscore Criteria analysis showed that 39 (21.3%) of the evaluated dental facilities were considered "ready," while 133 (72.7%) and 11 (6%) were considered to have "work to do" and "not ready" for the pandemic. Bivariate analysis showed that the level of facility (p&lt;0.001), presence of other departments (p&lt;0.001), funds sufficiency for COVID-19 emergency response (p=0.001), and clients attended per month (p=0.017) were statistically significant factors associated with pandemic preparedness scores. Regression analysis revealed that the presence of other departments among the dental facilities was a significant predictor of readiness, with a 4.5 times higher likelihood of being ready for a pandemic (aOR 4.591; 1.471–14.327, p=0.009) compared to other facilities. Support from healthcare authorities and capacity-building initiatives are recommended to enhance preparedness and resilience among dental facilities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

Contextualization of enablers and barriers for COVID-19 vaccine uptake among adult tuberculosis patients attending selected clinics in Nairobi County, Kenya

<p>Although vaccination is a cost-effective, equitable, and impactful public health intervention in curbing the spread of infectious disease, low uptake is a significant concern, especially among high-risk population groups. Nearly half of the population is unvaccinated in Nairobi, yet there is a shortage of vaccination information on vulnerable tuberculosis (TB) patients. The interplay of factors influences uptake, and protecting this vulnerable group and the general population from severe disease, hospitalization, and deaths is worthy. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and individual-level enablers and barriers to COVID-19 vaccine uptake among adult TB patients attending selected clinics in Nairobi County, Kenya. This cross-sectional mixed-method study was conducted at TB clinics across six sub-counties in Nairobi County. It included 388 participants sampled from each clinic's TB register. Quantitative data was collected using a questionnaire, and qualitative data was collected through key informant interviews and focus group discussions. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages for categorical variables and mean standard deviation for continuous variables) and inferential statistics (logistic regression). Qualitative data was analyzed through deductive coding and thematic analysis. The prevalence of COVID-19 vaccination was 46.1%, with 38.1% receiving complete vaccination. Mistrust in vaccine management (adjusted odds ratio (aOR)= 0.075, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.025-0.229, <em>p </em>&lt;0.001) was a significant barrier to COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Perceived covid-19 susceptibility (aOR = 2.901, 95% CI: 1.258-6.688, <em>p </em>= 0.012) and perceived covid-19 seriousness (aOR = 3.294, 95% CI: 1.130-9.604, <em>p </em>= 0.029) were significant enablers of COVID-19 vaccine uptake. Qualitative themes related to individual-level barriers and enablers of COVID-19 vaccine uptake were fear of side effects, stigma, myths, and mistrust in the messaging for barriers and desire to protect others and risk perception as enablers. The study revealed critical individual-level factors related to COVID-19 vaccine uptake.</p>

From Movement to Infection: Deciphering COVID-19 Transmission via Transfer Entropy

<p>We retrieved daily cases for all of Spain reported at the level of provinces and the level of Basic Health Areas (BHA) for Catalunya and Madrid (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4634868">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4634868</a>). Each record corresponds to a geo-referenced time series where each record has an associated date, the corresponding identifier of the layer, a code of the zone i.e. a province or BHA) and the number of cases reported on that date (daily incidence).</p> <p>Mobility and population data records come from a study conducted by the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA, \emph{Ministerio de Transportes, Movilidad y Agenda Urbana}) which analyses the mobility and distribution of the population in Spain from February 14th 2020 to May 9th 2021 <a href="https://www.mitma.gob.es/ministerio/covid-19/evolucion-movilidad-big-data">https://www.mitma.gob.es/ministerio/covid-19/evolucion-movilidad-big-data</a> retrieved from <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4634895">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4634895</a>. The data records are based on a sample of more than 13 million anonymized mobile-phone lines provided by a single mobile operator whose subscribers are evenly distributed and include two different mobility indicators. Daily origin-destination matrices (ODM) account for the number of trips between 2850 mobility areas that cover almost the entire territory of Spain, reconstructed by combining cell phone antenna coverage areas with districts and municipalities.</p> <p>The second mobility indicator reports for each mobility areas the total number of persons that have performed 0, 1, 2 or more than 2 trips in a given date. The indicator accounts for the fractions of people performing at least one trip or none, as well as the estimated total population in that zone for the given date. Single cell multiomic analysis identifies key genes differentially expressed in innate lymphoid cells from COVID-19 patients

<p>Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are enriched at mucosal surfaces where they respond rapidly to environmental stimuli and contribute to both tissue inflammation and healing. To gain insight into the role of ILCs in the pathology and recovery from COVID-19 infection, we employed a multi-omic approach consisting of Abseq and targeted mRNA sequencing to respectively probe the surface marker expression, transcriptional profile and heterogeneity of ILCs in peripheral blood of patients with COVID-19 compared with healthy controls.  We found that the frequency of ILC1 and ILC2 cells was significantly increased in COVID-19 patients.  Moreover, all ILC subsets displayed a significantly higher frequency of CD69-expressing cells, indicating a heightened state of activation.  ILC2s from COVID-19 patients had the highest number of significantly differentially expressed (DE) genes. The most notable genes DE in COVID-19 vs healthy participants included a) genes associated with responses to virus infections and b) genes that support ILC self-proliferation, activation and homeostasis. In addition, differential gene regulatory network analysis revealed ILC-specific regulons and their interactions driving the differential gene expression in each ILC. Overall, this study provides mechanistic insights into the characteristics of ILC subsets activated during COVID-19 infection.</p>

Single-cell transcriptomic analysis of B cells reveals new insights into atypical memory B cells in COVID-19

<p><span>Here, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing of S1 and RBD protein-specific B cells from convalescent COVID-19 patients with different clinical manifestations. This study aimed to evaluate the role and developmental pathway of atypical memory B cells in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results revealed a proinflammatory signature across B cell subsets associated with disease severity, as evidenced by the upregulation of genes such as <em>GADD45B</em>, <em>MAP3K8</em>, and <em>NFKBIA</em> in critical and severe individuals. Furthermore, the analysis of atypical memory B cells suggested a developmental pathway similar to that of conventional memory B cells through germinal centers, as indicated by the expression of several genes involved in germinal center processes, including <em>CXCR4</em>, <em>CXCR5</em>, <em>BCL2</em>, and <em>MYC</em>. Additionally, the upregulation of genes characteristic of the immune response in COVID-19, such as <em>ZFP36</em> and <em>DUSP1</em>, suggested that the differentiation and activation of atypical memory B cells may be influenced by exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and that these genes may contribute to the immune response for COVID-19 recovery. Our study contributes to a better understanding of atypical memory B cells in COVID-19 and the role of other B cell subsets across different clinical manifestations.</span></p>

Data from: Safety and efficacy of BCG re-vaccination in relation to COVID-19 morbidity in healthcare workers: A double-blind, randomised, controlled, phase 3 trial

<p>Morbidity and mortality attributable to COVID-19 is devastating global health systems and economies. Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) vaccination has been in use for many decades to prevent severe forms of tuberculosis in children. Studies have also shown a combination of improved long-term innate or trained immunity (through epigenetic reprogramming of myeloid cells) and adaptive responses after BCG vaccination, which leads to non-specific protective effects in adults. Observational studies have shown that countries with routine BCG vaccination programs have significantly less reported cases and deaths of COVID-19, but such studies are prone to significant bias and need confirmation. To date, in the absence of direct evidence, WHO does not recommend BCG for the prevention of COVID-19. This project aims to investigate in a timely manner whether and why BCG-revaccination can reduce infection rate and/or disease severity in health care workers during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in South Africa. </p> <p>These objectives will be achieved with a blinded, randomised controlled trial of BCG revaccination versus placebo in exposed front-line staff in hospitals in Cape Town. Observations will include the rate of infection with COVID-19 as well as the occurrence of mild, moderate or severe ambulatory respiratory tract infections, hospitalisation, need for oxygen, mechanical ventilation or death. HIV-positive individuals will be excluded. Safety of the vaccines will be monitored. A secondary endpoint is the occurrence of latent or active tuberculosis. Initial sample size and follow-up duration is at least 500 workers and 52 weeks. Statistical analysis will be model-based and ongoing in real time with frequent interim analyses and optional increases of both sample size or observation time, based on the unforeseeable trajectory of the South African COVID-19 epidemic, available funds and recommendations of an independent data and safety monitoring board. The study will be supported by a novel 3D lung organoid model of SARS-CoV-2 infection system that can mimic the cascade of immunological events after SARS-CoV-2 infection to determine and analyse the contribution of cellular components to the impact of BCG revaccination in this study.</p> <p>Given the immediate threat of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic the trial has been designed as a pragmatic study with highly feasible endpoints that can be continuously measured. This allows for the most rapid identification of a beneficial outcome that would lead to immediate dissemination of the results, vaccination of the control group and outreach to the health authorities to consider BCG vaccination for all qualifying health care workers.</p>

Examining the oil price and renewable energy price nexus: Comparative wavelet analysis for the aftermath of 2008 financial crisis, shale oil crisis and COVID-19 pandemic.

<p><span>In this study, we conducted a wavelet analysis on the dependence between renewable energy indices and Brent oil index (Brent) for the period of 21st November, 2003 till 24th May, 2024. The objective of the paper includes comparing the co-movement of renewable energy stock prices and oil prices during three different crises including the global financial crisis, shale oil crisis and the covid-19 pandemic. We found that the dependence is similar for both Europe and on a global scale during the pre-crises time, where renewable energy prices lead Brent oil prices in the short and medium term. Furthermore, results confirm that there is substitutability between oil prices and renewable energy prices before all crises which shows a positive correlation. The results further show that the short and medium term dependence disappears after the oil crisis and financial crisis which is supported by the sudden loss in demand for oil. These findings show that co-movement changes between the three crises where there is no dependence between the indices after the financial and oil crisis while there is a negative correlation after the covid-19 pandemic. These findings could have significant ramifications for investors seeking to mitigate risks and for policymakers making decisions about supporting the advancement of renewable energy while understanding the change of behaviour between the two crises.</span></p>
