Arthropod pitfall trap data from 12 NPP study locations at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1996-2001

This data package contains counts and taxonomic identification of arthropods sampled by pitfall traps at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 1996-2001. The objective of this study is to observe how shifts in vegetation resulting from desertification processes in the Chihuahaun desert have changed the spatial and temporal availability of resources for consumers. Desertification changes in the Jornada Basin include changes from grass to shrub dominated communities and major soil changes. If grassland systems respond to rainfall without significant lags, but shrub systems do not, then consumer species should reflect these differences. In addition, shifts from grassland to shrubland results in greater structural heterogeneity of the habitats. We hypothesized that consumer populations, diversity, and densities of some consumers will be higher in grasslands than in shrublands and will be related to the NPP of the sites. Arthropods were captured in pitfall traps at LTER III consumer plots (a subset of NPP plots) at 2 month intervals. Data collected includes number of individuals, order, family, genus, and species. This study is complete. Earlier arthropod data collected using a different study design are in package knb-lter-jrn.210008002.

Jornada Basin LTER wireless meteorological station at MNORT wind tower site: 5-minute summary data, 2006 - ongoing (provisional)

This dataset contains 5-minute summary data from the MNORT wind tower station. Average air temperature, wind speed and wind direction at multiple heights are measured and calculated based on 1-second scan rate of all sensors located at an automated meteorological station installed at Jornada LTER MNORT site (different than the M-NORT NPP site). Wind speed is measured at 135 cm, 230 cm, 345cm, 705cm, and 1515 cm, wind direction at 250cm and 850cm, and air temperature at 80cm and 1440cm. This climate station is operated by the Jornada LTER Program and this is an ongoing dataset. CAUTION: little to no QA/QC has been applied to this dataset and these data are therefore provisional.

Rodent capture data across grassland-shrubland ecotones at 3 sites in the Jornada Basin, 2004-ongoing

The objective of this study is to investigate how pulses of precipitation translate into pulses of plant aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and how the small mammal community responds to such changes in relation to shrub gradients in northern Chihuahuan Desert landscapes. This dataset consists of the first capture of individuals each year that can be used to calculate an index of relative abundance of rodents (i.e., number of unique individuals captured by species). The first-capture data are derived from mark-recapture sampling during 4 consecutive night trapping events held annually in three habitat vegetation zones (grassland, ecotone, and mesquite shrubland) at three grassland-to-shrubland ecotone sites in the Jornada Basin, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. Variables include rodent species, sex, reproductive status, weight, and maturity status. Also available are measures of relative abundance and biomass of rodents in data package knb-lter-jrn.210262010. This is an ongoing dataset.

Plant phenology observations at 15 sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 1992-ongoing

This ongoing data package, which began in 1992, contains monthly plant phenological observations by species at the 15 Net Primary Production (NPP) study sites at the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) or Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. Sites were selected to represent the 5 major ecosystem types in the Chihuahuan Desert (upland grasslands, playa grasslands, mesquite-dominated shrublands, creosotebush-dominated shrublands, tarbush-dominated shrublands). For each ecosystem type, three sites were selected to represent the range in variability in production and plant diversity; thus the locations are not replicates. A transect at each site is monitored monthly to assess the following phenological stages for each species: dormancy, non-reproductive status, budding, flowering, and fruiting. Sampling methods in the first years of the study monitored all plant species present but have been changed to focus on specific species at each site.

This dataset contains data and code for the paper "Dryland soil mycobiome response to long-term precipitation variability depends on host type" published in Journal of Ecology in 2022. Data were collected at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, USA. Soil samples were sent to the University of Georgia, for DNA extraction and sequencing, performed at the Georgia Genomics and Bioinformatics Core in Athens, GA. Perennial grass tiller and stolon counts in plots with experimentally altered precipitation variability at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2012-2014

This dataset contains perennial grass tiller and stolon counts collected starting in 2012 for a long-term precipitation variability manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. The study was designed to assess the effect of interannual variability in precipitation on average aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in Chihuahuan Desert grasslands. The study began in 2009, has five annual precipitation treatments, and contains 50 plots (10 per treatment). This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. There are high, low, and ambient (control) precipitation variability treatments. Ambient plots receive natural precipitation each year, while variability treatments alternate between 20% and 180% (high variability), or 50% and 150% (low variability) of ambient precipitation each year. Perennial grass tiller and stolon counts were made annually in each plot from 2012-2014. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated as needed.

This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs, and fertilization treatments to alter nitrogen input to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. Tillers and stolons of perennial grasses were counted in each plot in 2012, 2013 and 2014. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated as needed.

Photosynthetic rates of leaves from reduced and enhanced precipitation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2008

This data package contains photosynthetic rate data for leaves collected from mesquite shrubs and black grama grasses at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2007-2008. The purpose of this study was to quantify ecophysiological performance of shrubs and grasses in the context of precipitation manipulations. One mesquite and one black grama leaf from each plot (n = 20 plots; 5 PPT treatments X 4 replicate plots/treatment) were measured 5 times beginning July 2007 and ending in August 2008. Plots were subjected to precipitation treatments consisting of +/-80%, +/-50%, and ambient/control. A subset of plots also had a nitrogen addition treatment. Leaves were excised from plants and immediately measured for photosynthetic rate under ideal conditions in a LiCor cuvette. This study has been completed.

Gap-filled daily precipitation at the 15 long-term NPP sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 1980-ongoing

This package contains gap-filled daily precipitation values for the 15 NPP sites at Jornada Basin LTER in southern New Mexico, USA. Sites were selected to represent the 5 major ecosystem types in the Chihuahuan Desert (upland grasslands, playa grasslands, mesquite-dominated shrublands, creosotebush-dominated shrublands, tarbush-dominated shrublands). For each ecosystem type, three sites were selected to represent the range in variability in production and plant diversity; thus the locations are not replicates. Gap-filled daily precipitation was calculated for the period from 1980 to 2020 at each site using the closest rain gauges that provided a minimum resolution of daily precipitation data. The Methods section and attached documents describe this process in detail. The rain gauges used are described, with respect to their relationship to NPP sites, in the attached "daily_gapfill_ppt_gauge_usage.csv" file. Although automated weather stations became operational at all NPP sites in 2013 (except P-SMAL, in 2017), updates to this data package are ongoing and are intended to gap-fill any missing or invalid data from the weather stations.
