Multi-classifier for RC bridge defects
<p>Classifying concrete defects during a bridge inspection remains a subjective and laborious task. The risk of getting a false result is approximately 50% if different inspectors assess the same concrete defect. This is significant in the light of an over-ageing bridge stock, decreasing infrastructure maintenance budgets and catastrophic bridge collapses as happened in 2018 in Genoa, Italy. To support an automated inspection and an objective bridge defect classification, we propose a three-staged concrete defect classifier that can multi-classify potentially unhealthy bridge areas into their specific defect type in conformity with existing bridge inspection guidelines. Three separate deep neural pre-trained networks are fine-tuned based on multi-source dataset consisting of self-collected image samples plus several Departments of Transportation inspection databases. We show that this approach can reliably classify multiple defect types with an average mean score of 85%. Our presented multi-classifier is a contribution towards developing a mostly or fully inspection schema for a more cost effective and more objective bridge inspection.</p>

UHPC Shear Keys in Concrete Bridge Superstructures
<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18CNMS01. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>"This research investigated the use of locally produced ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) as a grouting material to repair deteriorated shear keys. Shear keys are used in adjacent girder superstructures to produce monolithic behavior and load transfer across the structure. Shear key durability is a concern since shear key degradation can jeopardize the integrity of the structure. Transportation agencies have reported that 75% of distress in adjacent girder bridges is due to cracking and de-bonding along shear keys. Previous research has shown that locally produced UHPC has excellent mechanical and durability properties. UHPC has also been shown to have good bonding characteristics that are desirable in a potential grouting material. Several tests were conducted to evaluate the potential of UHPC as a shear key grout material. Bond strength between UHPC grout and substrate concrete was evaluated using slant-shear and direct tension tests. Results showed that adequate bond was achieved at seven days. However, 28-day strengths were less than recommended bond strengths. The low strengths were attributed to the low strength of the substrate concrete. Shrinkage of UHPC grout was also investigated. Total shrinkage was approximately 2000 μstrain with approximately half occurring in the plastic state. Full-scale testing was used to evaluate load-deflection behavior of channel girder assemblages with grouted shear keys. The results showed that UHPC grout and non-shrink grout had similar mechanical performance. Excellent bond was achieved with all grouts, even with minimal surface preparation. In fact, the shear keys remained bonded to the girders even when service load deflections were exceeded and no lateral restraint, such as post-tensioning, was provided. A non-shrink grout slightly outperformed the UHPC grout. While this outperformance of the non-shrink grout may not be significant, it does indicate that UHPC grout does not provide a mechanical benefit over the non-shrink grout."</p>
Structural Vulnerability of Coastal Bridges Under Extreme Hurricane Conditions

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>"This work presents the results of a numerical study evaluating the response of coastal bridges due to hurricane-induced waves. The analyses were conducted using the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) approach, available on the commercial finite element software Abaqus, which allows modeling the interaction between water and the bridge. The work concentrated on (1) establishing an approach for modeling the desired wave characteristics (i.e., wave height, and frequency) within the CEL simulation, (2) conducting simulations using actual bridge dimensions of historically damaged bridges, (3) analyzing a range of foundation flexibilities to determine its effect on the uplift and shear forces acting on the superstructure, and (4) comparing results simulations to AASHTO equations that estimate wave forces acting on coastal bridges. The numerical study revolved around two major highway bridges damaged along the U.S Gulf Coast during hurricane Katrina in 2005, (a) the U.S 90 highway bridge over Biloxi Bay and (b) the US. 90 St. Louis-Bay Bridge. The water level elevation was defined at the bottom of the superstructure as post-Katrina investigations revealed that this was a common characteristic for damaged bridges. The analysis revealed that (a) bridge models with flexible foundations provide better force design estimates than models with rigid supports, (b) the force demands are presumably amplified when the natural frequency of the bridge coincides with that of the traveling waves, and (c) CEL force estimates show large peak magnitudes during wave impacts that exceed AASHTO estimates. Further research is required to determine if these peaks are numerical artifacts or a concern for connection design."</p>

Data from: Bridging the Rubicon: phylogenetic analysis reveals repeated colonizations of marine and fresh waters by thalassiosiroid diatoms
Salinity imposes a significant barrier to he distribution of many organisms, including diatoms. Diatoms are ancestrally marine, and the number of times they have independently colonized fresh waters and the physiological adaptations that facilitated these transitions remain outstanding questions in diatom evolution. The colonization of fresh waters by diatoms has been compared to ''crossing the Rubicon,'' implying that successful colonization events are rare, irreversible, and lead to substantial species diversification. To test these hypotheses, we reconstructed the phylogeny of Thalassiosirales, a diatom lineage with high diversity in both marine and fresh waters. We collected ~5.3 kb of DNA sequence data from the nuclear (SSU and partial LSU rDNA) and chloroplast genomes (psbC and rbcL) and reconstructed the phylogeny using parsimony and Bayesian methods. Alternative topology tests strongly reject all previous colonization hypotheses, including monophyly of the predominantly freshwater Stephanodiscaceae. Results showed at least three independent colonizations of fresh waters, and whereas previous accounts of freshwater-to-marine transitions have been discounted, these results provide compelling evidence for as many as three independent re-colonizations of the marine habitat, two of which led to speciation events. This study adds valuable phylogenetic context to previous debate about the nature of the salinity barrier in diatoms and provides compelling evidence that, at least for Thalassiosirales, the salinity barrier might be less formidable than previously thought.

Aligned Diffusion Schroedinger Bridges
<p>We add the processed and prepared raw datasets for the D3PM dataset.</p> <p><br> <strong>Paper Abstract</strong><br> Diffusion Schrödinger bridges (DSB) have recently emerged as a powerful framework for recovering stochastic dynamics via their marginal observations at different time points. Despite numerous successful applications, existing algorithms for solving DSBs have so far failed to utilize the structure of aligned data, which naturally arises in many biological phenomena. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithmic framework that, for the first time, solves DSBs while respecting the data alignment. Our approach hinges on a combination of two decades-old ideas: The classical Schrödinger bridge theory and Doob’s h-transform. Compared to prior methods, our approach leads to a simpler training procedure with lower variance, which we further augment with principled regularization schemes. This ultimately leads to sizeable improvements across experiments on synthetic and real data, including the tasks of protein conformational changes and temporal evolution of cellular differentiation processes.</p>
